PUBLICITÉ
Le texte qui suit est une version écourtée de la nouvelle d'Isaac Asimov 'First
Law', publiée en 1956. Pour la version intégrale, achetez-vous le recueil de
nouvelles The Complete Robot (disponible à partir de 5 € sur Amazon). Ce recueil
contient de nombreuses autres nouvelles très intéressantes. Vous en connaissez
sans doute certaines qui ont donné lieu à des adaptations cinématographiques
(Comme I Robot avec Will Smith).
CONSIGNES
Ce partiel a été donné à vos collègues de l'an dernier. Comme nous arrivons à la
fin du semestre et de notre préparation, je vous conseille de le faire dans les
conditions d'examen. Cela veut dire
- sans ordinateur
- sans dictionnaire
- sans interruption et en 1h30
Vous verrez que le manque de temps est un problème crucial !

FIRST LAW
Mike Donavan looked at his empty beer mug, felt bored, and decided he had
listened long enough. He said loudly, "if we're going to talk about unusual robots,
I once knew one that disobeyed the First Law."
And since that was completely impossible, everyone stopped talking and

turned to Donavan. MacFarlane said, "you mean you knew a robot that harmed a
human being?" That was what disobedience to the first law meant, of course.
"In a way," said Donavan. "It happened on Titan about ten years ago. We had
just recently received three new-model robots, specially designed for Titan. They
were MA models. We called them Emma One, Two and Three." He snapped his

fingers for another beer.
MacFarlane said, "I've been in Robotics all my life, Mike. I never heard of MA
robots."
"That's because they took the MAs off the assembly lines immediately after –
after what I'm going to tell you.
"We put the robots to work at once. You see, until then, the Base had been

entirely useless during the stormy1 season, which lasts eighty percent of Titan's
revolution around Saturn. During the terrific snows, you couldn’t find the Base if
it were only a hundred yards away.
"The robots worked fine during the first stormy season, then at the start of the

calm season, Emma Two began acting up2. She kept wandering3 off into corners
and had to be coaxed out. Finally she wandered off Base and didn't come back.
We decided there had been a flaw4 in her manufacture and got along with the
other two. Still, it meant we were short-handed, or short-roboted anyway, so
when toward the end of the calm season, someone had to go to Kornsk, I

volunteered to chance it without a robot. It seemed safe enough; the storms
weren't expected for two days and I'd be back in twenty hours.
"I was on my way back – a good ten miles from Base – when the wind started
blowing. I landed my air car immediately before the wind could smash it, pointed

myself towards the base and started running. It was easy enough in the low

gravity and my air supply was ample. But there was so much snow that I couldn't
see a thing.
Suddenly, I saw a little dark object right ahead of me. I could barely make it
out but I knew what it was; it was a storm pup; the only living thing that could
stand a Titanian storm, and the most vicious living thing anywhere. I knew my

space suit would not protect me.
I was raising my blaster when a bigger shadow loomed over me suddenly. It
was Emma Two, the missing robot. I howled, 'Emma, baby, get that storm pup;
and then get me back to Base.'
"It just looked at me as if it hadn't heard and called out, 'Master, don't shoot.'

It made for5 that storm pup at a dead run.
"'Get that damned pup, Emma,' I shouted. It got the pup, all right. But then it
ran away with it and left me to die. Luckily, I pulled through safely - half an hour
later, the storm died down. Emma Two returned to Base two hours after I did and
the mystery was then explained.
"It's true I was a human being in danger of death, but to that robot there was

something else that came first, even before me, before the first law."
Donavan's eyes turned upward reverently and his voice trembled. "That storm
pup was no storm pup. We named it Emma Junior. What is even First Law
compared with the holy ties6 of mother love?"

2- Azimov, l'auteur de cette nouvelle, est un auteur de science fiction. La plupart
de ses écrits se basent sur trois lois de robotique qu'il a inventées. Lisez ces trois
lois dans l'encadré ci-dessous puis expliquez dans vos propres termes en quoi
Emma 2 a enfreint la Loi 1. A-t-elle agressé Donavan? (2 points)
