ZOULIKHA BOUABDELLAH Zoulikha Bouabdellah (born 1977, Moscow) lives and works in Casablanca. She grew up in Algiers and moved to France with her family in 1993 due to the civil war. From this plural identity, the artist draws the foundation of her work, which is built around transgression, humour and subversion. Through installation, video and photograph, her works question authoritative representations, be they political, social, moral, religious or formal. Her work strives to articulate notions of feminism and sexuality, both as political intervention and as an emancipatory gesture. Her works have been featured in Experiments in the Arab Avant-garde at the French Cinémathèque in Paris, Africa Remix at the Centre Pompidou (2005), and Paradise Now! Essential Avant-Guarde French Cinema 1890 – 2008 at the Tate Modern (2008). Bouabdellah’s work was also part of Body Talk at Wiels (2015), Modernites Plurielles 1905 – 1970 at Centre Pompidou (2014), The Divine Comedy at Museum für Moderne Kunst (2014), Music Palace, the Power of Music seen by Visual Artists at the Boghossian Foundation (2014), The Progress of Love at The Menil Foundation (2012). She has also exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2007), Aichi Triennial (2010), Bamako Biennial (2003), Mori Art Museum (2006), Brooklyn Museum (2007), Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation (2006), Museum Kunst Palast (2004), Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (2009), Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (2013) and the Moderna Museet (2012). Zoulikha Bouabdellah is the recipient of several awards including the Prix Meurice for Contemporary Art, Paris (2008) for her sculpture The Kiss. She was one of the three winners of the inaugural Abraaj Capital Prize, Dubai (2009) for her installation Walking on the Sky, Pisces award for young Algerian creation, and Villa Medicis Hors les Murs in Cape Town (2005). She has completed residencies at the Art School Palestine in Ramallah, Amherst College in Massachussetts and in Cape Town. Her works are held in several public collections including Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing, Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, and Moderner Kunst Stifung Ludwig, Wien, among others.
