C’est le 25 septembre 1975 que fut déployé officiellement le
drapeau franco-ontarien au mât de l’Université de Sudbury, un
établissement d’education fédéré de l’Université Laurentienne.
It was on September 25, 1975, that the Franco-Ontarian flag
was officially unfurled at the University of Sudbury, a Federated
school of Laurentian University.
Les auteurs à l’origine du pavillon qui rayonne sur l’Ontario
français sont Gaétan Gervais, alors jeune professeur d’Histoire
à l’Université Laurentienne et un groupe d’étudiants francoontariens. Parmi eux, citons Yves Tassé, Donald Obonsawin et
Michel Dupuis.
The creators of this emblem representing Ontario’s Francophone
culture are Gaétan Gervais, at that time, a young history
professor at Laurentian University and a group of FrancoOntarian students among them, Yves Tassé, Donald Obonsawin
and Michel Dupuis.
L’ACFO provinciale a adopté le drapeau habillé de la fleur-de-lis
et de la fleur-de-trille en 1977. Les deux motifs sont sur un fond
blanc et vert. La couleur immaculée represente nos hivers et le
vert symbolise nos étés.
In 1977, the provincial ACFO (French Canadian Association of
Ontario) adopted the flag with its ”fleur-de-lis” and trillium as
its emblem. The two floral images are set on a white and green
background, with the white symbolizing our winters and the
green for our summers.
La fleur-de-lis montre l’appartenance des Franco-ontariens
à la grande francophonie canadienne. Cette même fleur est
également utilisée par d’autres pays francophones faisant partie
de la grande communauté d’expression française de par le
monde.
The ”fleur-de-lis” represents Franco-Ontarians’ membership in
the larger French-speaking Canadian family. This flower is also
a symbol used by many French-speaking countries around the
world which are part of the global French-speaking community.
La fleur-de-trille est le symbole de l’Ontario, la province où se
trouve la plus grande population de francophones hors Québec
au pays. Ce symbole souligne aussi les mots de ralliement des
Franco-ontariens :
The trillium is the emblem of Ontario, the province where
there is the largest French-speaking population in the country,
outside of Quebec. This symbol also epitomizes the rallying call
of Franco-Ontarians:
Nous sommes, nous serons !
We are, we will be!
