Amy Rowell
Research Manager
Amy Rowell is the Research Manager for IDC Manufacturing Insights' Product Lifecycle Strategies
practice. Her research focuses on topics and challenges that relate to product lifecycle economics,
including enabling the digital thread, ideation and innovation, systems engineering, collaborative design,
intellectual property, product quality, and sustainability. Ms. Rowell is also responsible for examining the
technology trends, best practices, and business imperatives of importance to the engineering-oriented
value-chain, which includes sectors such as automotive; aerospace and defense; consumer durables;
farm, construction, and industrial machinery (FCIM); and other discrete manufacturing.
Prior to joining IDC, Ms. Rowell served as an industry analyst/editor for a variety of technology and
market research firms, including Aberdeen Group (Boston, MA), Daratech (Cambridge, MA), and Cyon
Research (Bethesda, MD). She has been responsible for technical marketing/market research for several
leading manufacturing firms, including SEMATECH (a research and development consortia focused on
semiconductor manufacturing technology), Robotics, Inc. (an automotive/industrial supplier of robotic
systems), and Westinghouse Industrial Automation Division.
Ms. Rowell was instrumental in the launch of a number of engineering/design publications, including:
MCADCafe, an online resource for mechanical engineers; Innovate Forum, an online forum dedicated to
product and process innovation; and Cadence magazine, offering tips and techniques for CAD
professionals. Most recently, she served as the founder and principal analyst at Four Winds Research,
where her primary focus was sustainable product design and manufacturing.
Ms. Rowell holds a B.S. in Industrial Distribution (Mechanical Engineering/Technical Marketing) from
Clarkson College of Technology.
