Le projet «Villes Humaines: design urbain durable» a été pensé dans le prolongement du colloque
international «Villes humaines, design d’environnement durable», qui s’est tenu à Bruxelles en mai 2007.
Cette rencontre constituait le premier volet d’un projet plus étendu de réflexion et de prospective sur
l’espace public urbain, sa dynamique humaine et culturelle, ainsi que l’interdisciplinarité entre les
nombreux métiers et acteurs de l’espace public. Le succès de cet évènement a motivé la création d’un
partenariat entre l’Institut supérieur d’architecture de la Communauté française de Belgique (ISACF-La
Cambre), chef de file du projet, et l’association Pro Materia à Bruxelles [BE] ainsi que la Lighthouse Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City à Glasgow [UK], le Polítecnico de Milan [IT] et
l’Institute for Urban Planning de Lljubljana [SI]. Cette collaboration européenne a débuté à l’automne
2008 pour une première durée de dix-huit mois.
Les principaux objectifs du projet consistent à mettre en œuvre, dans une perspective européenne, une
réflexion partagée et interdisciplinaire sur les dynamiques socio-culturelles du design durable d’espaces
publics urbains.
Le volet scientifique du projet soulignera les fonctions de l’espace public au sein des villes
contemporaines par le biais du design urbain englobant les «formes» et les «objets» urbains. Il analysera
les mécanismes d’appropriation/de refus des espaces publics d’après les formes et les objets qui les
occupent et qui les animent. Cette étude sera alimentée par des ateliers de réflexion et d’échange
programmés dans les villes partenaires. Un certain nombre de missions de contact et d’étude est
également prévu.
Les résultats de cette recherche seront présentés dans le cadre d’un colloque international de clôture à
Bruxelles. Cet événement coïncidera avec la sortie d’un ouvrage de synthèse regroupant les
conclusions des groupes de réflexion, des recherches et contacts menés sur le terrain et des
contributions des orateurs invités au colloque.
Ce volet de conceptualisation s’articulera à un volet éducatif, de sensibilisation et de communication, qui
se concrétisera par l’organisation à Bruxelles d’un module pédagogique expérimental organisé dans
des écoles, ainsi que par un concours européen de reportages photo ou vidéo couplé à un appel à
idées et à projets destinés à de jeunes créateurs.
Les projets et reportages retenus constitueront le noyau d’une exposition itinérante entre les villes
partenaires. La diffusion et la sensibilisation seront également renforcées grâce au site Internet
spécifiquement consacré à la problématique couverte par ce projet.
Le colloque final et l’inauguration de l’exposition itinérante à Bruxelles constitueront l’une des actions
centrales de lancement d’un réseau européen ainsi que du premier festival « Villes humaines», un
événement public multidisciplinaire (conférences, expositions, interventions dans l’espace public,
performances…), appelé à être organisé tous les deux ans, dans une des villes du réseau.

The project « Human cities: sustainable urban design » has been thought in the continuation of the
international colloquium “Humancities, sustainable environmental design”, which took place in Brussels in
May 2007. This meeting was the first part of a more extensive thought-worthy project on the urban public
space and its human and cultural dynamics, as well as on the interdisciplinarity between the numerous
professions and stakeholders of the public space. The success of this event motivated the creation of a
partnership between the Institute Superior of Architecture of the Belgian French Community (ISACF – La
Cambre; coordinator of the project), the association Pro Materia in Brussels [BE], the Lighthouse –
Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City in Glasgow [UK]; the Polítecnico of Milan [IT] and
the Institute for Urban Planning of Ljubljana [SI]. This European cooperation started on 2008 at fall, for a
first duration of eighteen months.
The main objectives of the project consist in sharing considerations, in a European and interdisciplinary
perspective, on the socio-cultural dynamics of the sustainable design in urban public spaces. The
scientific part of the project will underline the functions of the public space within the contemporary cities,
through a conception of urban design encompassing the urban “forms” and “objects”. The project will
analyse the mechanisms of appropriation/of refusal of public spaces, based on the forms and on the
objects which occupy and animate them. This study will be enriched with think tank and exchange
workshops, which will take place in the cities of the partners. A certain number of contact and study
missions are also planned.
The studies carried out will be presented during an international closing colloquium, to be held in
Brussels. This event will correspond with the publication of a synthesis book gathering the conclusions
of the think tank groups, of the practical research and contacts, and the lectures that will be delivered by
the guests of the colloquium.
This part dedicated to the conceptualisation will be joint to an educational, awareness-raising and
communication part, concretised through the organisation, in Brussels, of a pedagogical and
experimental module, in interaction with schools. A European contest of photographical and video
reporting, as well as a call for ideas/projects, will also take place.
The projects selected for the contest/call for projects will constitute the core of a travelling exhibition,
which will circulate among the partner cities. The dissemination and the awareness-raising will also be
reinforced thanks to a website specifically dedicated to the problematic of the project.
The final colloquium will constitute, together with the inauguration of the exhibition in Brussels, one of the
main launching actions of a formalised European network as well as the first “Humancities festival”, a
public and multidisciplinary event (conferences, exhibitions, interventions in the public space,
performances…), meant to be organised every two years in one of the cities of the network.
