Excel Statistics Project 2 Data sets for the three problems below are found in the file “project 2 data.xls” which may be downloaded using the “Project 2 data” link. Use the functions available in Excel to calculate the confidence intervals. Refer to the “formulas” and “solution” examples for z and t statistics. Keep all three problems in the same Excel file. You may assume that all populations are normally distributed. The descriptive statistic tool in data analysis uses the t statistic to generate the maximum error of the estimate. Select data analysis and then descriptive statistics; select the input range; select an output range on the same worksheet as the data; check the summary statistics box; check the box for confidence level for the mean and enter the desired confidence level. The maximum error of estimate is displayed in the last row of the output to the right of the confidence level. If a z statistic is appropriate, the maximum error of the estimate must be calculated using Excel functions (refer to the example). PHStat (if installed) will generate the confidence interval using either a z or t statistic. Problem 1 Column A contains the values of a random sample of the attendance at 30 college football games. The standard deviation for the population attendance is known to be 14358.2. Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean attendance at college football games. Problem 2 Column A contains the values of cigarette taxes in 17 randomly selected states. Find a 98% confidence interval for the mean cigarette tax in all 50 states. Problem 3 A random sample of the number of grams of carbohydrates in a 12‐ounce serving of 20 different brands of regular soda was collected and is listed in column A. Estimate the mean number of carbohydrates in all brands of regular soda with 95% confidence.
