Feu Sa Majesté Hassan II, un Roi visionnaire, avait imaginé à
une époque où le golf était encore élitiste dans bien des pays,
l’intérêt à la fois sportif, économique et politique qu’il y avait
à développer le golf. Tout d’abord, la création à Rabat d’un
complexe de 45 trous, dessiné par Feu Robert Trent Jones
Senior et puis diamant pour cet écrin, la création du Trophée
Hassan II, espace de rencontre entre les meilleurs joueurs
professionnels du moment, des décideurs économiques, des
leaders politiques et des personnalités du monde des arts
et du spectacle, s’affrontant sportivement dans une formule
conviviale et motivante.

At a time when Golf was quite
unknown in Morocco and in many
others countries, the Late King
Hassan II with his outstanding
vista, had envisioned the sport,
economical as well as political
possibilities that could be offered
by developing Golf. The point of
origin was the creation in Rabat
of a 45 holes complex designed
by the late Trent Jones Sr, and
like a diamond for valorizing such
exceptional surroundings, the
inception of the Hassan II Trophy.
It serves as a meeting place
for the best golf professional
players of the time and economic
decision-makers, political leaders
and celebrities.

HISTORIQUE
La date de 1971 est symbolique à double titre. C’est l’année de l’inauguration du Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, un complexe golfique voulu
par Feu Sa Majesté le Roi Hassan II et l’année du premier Trophée qui
porte alors le nom de Grand Prix International du Maroc.
Vingt-cinq champions découvrent le parcours Rouge, un chef d’œuvre
de l’architecte américain Robert Trent Jones. Avec une forte colonie
américaine parmi lesquels on trouve Sam Snead coiffé de son célèbre
panama et Johnny Miller surnommé l’archange blond. C’est l’Américain Orville
Moody qui remporte cette première
édition avec le score de 291, soit un seul

coup au-dessous du par.
Devant la réputation grandissante du Trophée Hassan II, Billy Casper,
double vainqueur de l’US Open (1959 et 1966) vient à Dar Es Salam
et suscite un engouement exceptionnel chez les milliers de spectateurs qui se pressent pour voir cette légende du golf. Enchanté par
l’hospitalité marocaine et le professionnalisme du Trophée, Casper
gagne non seulement le tournoi mais établit aussi un nouveau record
du parcours (288, - 4 sous le par).
Deux autres Américains, Robert Funseth
(289) et Lou Graham (294) s’adjugent les
places d’honneur. Quant aux Européens,
ils sont toujours aux abonnés absents.
Prenant l’engagement solennel de revenir
chaque année disputer le Trophée, Billy
Casper devient un véritable ambassadeur
du Maroc aux U.S.A. et un ami fidèle de
notre pays.

1973
Billy Casper, the two-time U.S Open winner
(1959 and 1966) arrived on the scene thanks
to the growing prestige of the Hassan II
Golf Trophy. He played at Dar Es Salam,
which cultivated immense enthusiasm.
Thousands of fans gathered to see this golf
legend in action. Delighted by the warm
welcome at the tournament, he not only
won, but he also set a new course record
(288 -4). Two other American players,
Robert Funseth and Lou Graham, finished
second and third respectively. European
Players were far from the top rankings. Billy
Casper made a promise to come back every
year to play for the Trophy, and, thanks to
his commitment, he became an ambassador
of Morocco in the United States and a
faithful friend of our country.

La réputation du Trophée Hassan II est déjà bien établie et, outre le
vainqueur de l’an dernier, on retrouve Al Geiberger bien décidé à
ajouter cette victoire prestigieuse à un palmarès incomparable. Bill
Canudo essaie bien de contrarier ses efforts mais c’est finalement
Ron Cerrudo qui termine à égalité avec Al Geiberger avec le score de
289. Cerrudo a le dernier mot dans le play-off, le premier de l’histoire
du Trophée, et remporte le fameux Poignard en Or tant convoité.
1972
The reputation of the Hassan II Golf Trophy
was already well established and among the
1971 players, we find Al Geiberger, who was
eager to add this famous tournament to his
long list of wins, and Bill Canudo, who tried
to upset his efforts. In the end, Canudo
faced Ron Cerrudo in a Play Off. Cerrudo
defeated Canudo to win the coveted golden
dagger with a score of 289 (-3).

Auréolé par sa performance de l’année précédente, Billy Casper arrive en
grandissime favori. Les Européens, humiliés par trois années consécutives
de disette, sont bien décidés à mettre un terme à la domination américaine. Honorant son statut de favori, Billy Casper réalise dès le premier
jour un score époustouflant mais c’est sans compter avec le talent de
son compatriote et ami Larry Ziegler qui élève les débats et réussit à se
détacher. Pour sa part, la nombreuse
communauté française présente à
Dar Es Salam mise tout sur Lu Huan
qui termine second derrière un Larry
Ziegler survolté qui réussit à pulvériser
le record du parcours avec un total de
284, soit 8 sous le par. Billy Casper,
3ème, perd son titre et son record de
l’année précédente.
1974
Billy Casper, returning after his incredible
win the previous year, was positioned as the
clear favorite.
The European players, after three years
of missed opportunities, finally decided to
stop the U.S. domination.
The French had a very good player, Lu Huan
who was supposed to put an end to the
American hegemony. And yet Billy Casper
showcased an outstanding performance
on the first day, confirming his place as
the favorite. However the talented Larry
Ziegler, a good friend of Billy Casper’s,
was able to overtake the U.S. Champion,
and the French champion Lu Huan, who
finished second behind Larry Ziegler. The
impressive player pulled off a course record
of 284, surpassing Billy Casper who finished
third, 4 shots behind Ziegler.

The first edition was definitely an American
one. The best players at this time were
Orville Moody, John Heard and Jack Snead.
They dominated the tournament and finished
inthat order, 291 (-1), 293 and 294. In spite
of the presence of talented golfers like Jean
Garaïalde and Peter Townsend, European
players did not perform well overall.

1971 | 1er Trophée Hassan II
précédente, Billy Casper revint en 1975 avec la ferme intention de
prendre sa revanche. A 44 ans, au sommet de son art, il va une fois de
plus se mesurer à ce parcours Rouge dont il connaît tous les secrets. Dès
le 1er jour, il annonce la couleur en rendant
une carte impressionnante et en prenant
la tête du classement. Au final, son score
de 284 égale le record de Ziegler. Les
Américains trustent également les 2ème et
3ème place avec respectivement Tommy
Aaron et Ron Cerrudo, déjà en lumière
au Royal Golf Dar Es Salam en 1972. Décidément, le Trophée Hassan II reste une

On pouvait croire que les Européens
acceptaient la domination sans
partage des Américains mais l’année 1976 sonne l’heure de la révolte
européenne. Les Américains Doug
Edwards et Curtis Strange sont
décidés à ajouter un 6ème titre au
palmarès américain, mais c’est sans compter avec le talent et les nerfs
d’acier de l’Espagnol Salvador Balbuena qui met un terme à la prééminence américaine. On imagine aisément la pression que Balbuena

It could be said that European players had
accepted U.S. domination after the first five
editions. However, 1976 was the year that
Europeans would take their revenge. U.S.
players Doug Edwards and Curtis Strange
had decided to add a sixth title to the
American prize list, but the defiant Spanish
player Salvador Balbuena brought an end
to the U.S. supremacy. One could easily
imagine the pressure he endured at the end
of the fourth round. He finished with a
score of 288 (-4), far ahead of Ziegler and
Casper’s 284.

Outre la présence de l’inusable Billy Casper à la recherche d’un 3ème
titre, on remarque la présence d’une des stars de la planète golf,
Lee Trevino en personne, le vainqueur 1971 et 1972 du British Open,
un des quatre tournois du Grand Chelem. Chez les Européens, tout
repose sur l’espoir du Vieux continent, le jeune Severiano Ballesteros
(Seve pour les aficionados). Le nombreux public de Dar Es Salam se
repartit alors en trois groupes : les traditionalistes qui encouragent Billy Casper, les réalistes fans de Lee Trevino et les
novateurs enthousiasmés par le génie précoce de Ballesteros.
Le suspense est extraordinaire et, malgré le léger avantage acquis par Trevino le 2ème jour, le résultat demeure
indécis jusqu’à la fin du tournoi. Le podium est magnifique : sur la plus haute marche, Lee Trevino qui bat
au passage le record de l’épreuve avec 283 (-9 sous
le par), à la 2ème place Billy Casper, et Severiano
Ballesteros à la 3ème place pour sa première participation.

acquise difficilement en 1976 grâce au
talent de l’Espagnol Balbuena et, curieusement, l’Angleterre, patrie du golf par
excellence, restait absente des débats.
C’est finalement Peter Townsend qui,
avec le modeste score de 292 (juste
le par) lave cet affront en devançant
les Américains J. Schrœder et Robert
Funseth qui réussit à inscrire son nom

Salvador Balbuena, Europe acquired an
uneasy victory in 1976. England, the land
of golf, was missing from the prize list until
Peter Townsend found himself in the Trophy
Hall of Fame, with a very humble score
of 292 (even Par).
This helped him defeat the American
players J. Schroeder and Robert Funseth.
This British victory helped The Hassan II
Golf Trophy make headlines throughout the
British press, which made the tournament
more well-known to European audiences.

In this year’s tournament, Billy Casper was
looking for a third title, and the star player
Lee Trevino, winner of the 1971 and 1972
British Open, was seeking to challenge him.
Among the European players, a young
talented newcomer by the name of
Severiano Ballesteros (Seve for the
Aficionados) was present. The numerous
fans of Dar Es Salam were split between
three camps: traditionalists supporting Billy
Casper, realists backing Lee Trevino and
innovators standing behind the precocious
genius of Ballesteros. There was extraordinary suspense, in spite of a slight advantage
taken by Lee Trevino during the second day.
However the result remained undecided
until the tournament’s end. Billy Casper
finished second, Ballesteros third, not bad
for his first appearance, and the famous
Lee Trevino won with a 283 (-9), a new
course record. The Hassan II Golf Trophy
continued to rise in the ranks of international
prominence.

1975
“Never awake a sleeping Lion”; disappointed
by his 1974 defeat, Billy Casper came back
in 1975 with the firm intention to take his
revenge. At 44 years old, he was at the top
of his career, and he was ready to challenge
the well-known Red Course.
On the first day, he achieved an impressive
score and finished first. He scored 284,
matching Larry Ziegler’s result.
The American players Tommy Aaron
and Ron Cerrudo managed second and
third place respectively. The Hassan II Golf
Trophy was without a doubt ominated
by American players, despite a strong
European presence.
1975 | 5E Trophée Hassan II
The ninth edition of the now famous Hassan
II Golf Trophy was meticulously organized
with great anticipation. Everyone expected
yet another successful tournament with
numerous spectators and participants from
the traditional group of loyal celebrities.
High ranking professional players were
ready to show off their talents.
We paid special attention to the Mexican
player Regalado, the Spaniard Angel
Garrido, and the usual group of American
players. In the end, the American player
Mike Brannan won the Trophy with 288 (-4),
ahead of his fellow-countrymen E. Fiori
and A.Tapie, who both finished up with 290.
La 9
ème
édition du désormais célèbre Trophée Hassan II se présente
sous les meilleurs auspices. Public nombreux, amateurs triés sur le volet
et célébrités sont fidèles au rendezvous de Rabat. Les professionnels de
qualité vont alors faire montre de tout
leur talent. On remarque entre autres
le Mexicain Regalado et l’Espagnol
Angel Garrido ainsi que le bataillon
de nombreux Américains qui aiment
traverser l’Atlantique. C’est finalement
le grand Mike Brannan qui remporte
le Trophée avec 288 (-4 sous le par)

Peu à peu, de nouveaux champions apparaissent comme Scott Hoch,
Bruce Fleisher et autres Bob Eastwood et Lenny Clements. Tous ces
nouveaux talents sont bien décidés à bousculer la hiérarchie établie.
Bruce Fleisher fait figure de favori logique tant sa forme est excellente.
C’est sans compter avec la détermination de Bob Eastwood qui
s’impose avec 287 coups devant Bob Byman, Bruce Fleischer se
contentant de la 3ème marche du podium, ce qui ne l’empêche pas
de qualifier le Trophée Hassan II comme l’un des plus beaux tournois
disputé dans un golf au cadre idyllique.

Le 10ème Anniversaire du Trophée est
célébré comme il se doit et sa réputation acquise au fil des ans est un réel
motif de satisfaction. Aussi les grands
noms de la planète golf sont invités :
Lee Trevino, l’Ecossais Sandy Lyle ainsi
qu’Ed Sneed déjà monté sur le podium
en 1971. Lee Trevino recueille la faveur
des pronostics et semble devoir
remporter une victoire inéluctable.
Mais Ed Sneed le coiffe sur le fil en
réalisant un excellent 285 (- 7 sous le
par). Lee Trevino s’adjuge la 2ème place
et Peter Townsend sauve l’honneur du
vieux continent en terminant 3ème.

This edition marked the tenth anniversary
of The Hassan II Golf Trophy. In honor of
this celebration, many big names in the
golfing world were invited; Lee Trevino, the
British champion Sandy Lyle, and Ed Sneed,
who finished third place in 1971. Lee Trevino,
a Texas native, successfully seduced
the publicat Royal Golf Dar Es Salam and
came out as the clear favorite. Yet, it was
Ed Sneed who took the title with an excellent
score of 285 (-7 under Par). Lee Trevino
finished second and Peter Townsend saved
the old continent’s honor with his third
place finish. Overall, it was a successful
edition that honored the tournament’s
ten years of excellence and reinforced the
Trophy’s prestigious reputation.

1981
New champions began to steadily appear
on the scene. New talents such as Scott
Hoch, Bruce Fleisher, Bob Eastwood, and
Lenny Clements were eager to challenge
the traditional rankings. Bruce Fleisher
came out as the logical favorite. But thanks
to his grit and determination, Bob Eastwood
was able to defeat both Bob Byman
and Bruce Fleisher. Fleisher only managed
a third place finish. Nonetheless, he said
that The Hassan II Golf Trophy was one of
the best tournament locations in the game.
Bruce Fleisher appeared as the favourite.
But Bob Eastwood won the tournament
and Bob Byman ranked 2nd, while Bruce
Fleisher finished 3rd.

Les Américains qui fêtaient leur 10ème succès en 12 éditions étaient
décidés de cantonner les Européens dans la figuration intelligente.
C’est Frank Conner qui prend le relais en réalisant un excellent 287
devant Lenny Clements 288, Butch Baird l’homme au chapeau de paille
également 288, Ron Streck 289 et Bob Eastwood 290. Cinq Américains
terminent aux cinq premières places. Sans commentaires…
1982
American players were looking to reaffirm
the last ten titles they captured in the 1982
edition. They decided to solidify their
dominance over the European players
by taking the top five places! Frank Conner
won with 287 ahead of Lenny Clements
with 288, like Butch Baird, Ron Streck
managed a score of 289, and Bob Eastwood
finished fifth with a score of 290.

From both sides of the Atlantic
the wave of players continued as
newcomers began to appear on the scene;
Roger Maltbie, Manuel Pinero, Roger
Chapman and the Canadian Roger Zokol
were among them.
In this edition the participants faced
difficult conditions and played under heavy
showers. Nevertheless, Roger Maltbie was
able to tame the bad weather and finish
first with a score of 289, ahead of Bruce
Fleisher and Dick Zokol. Ron Streck and
Mike McCullough finished fourth and fifth
respectively.
Le rajeunissement se poursuit des deux
cotés de l’Atlantique puisque l’on voit
apparaître des noms comme Roger
Maltbie, Manuel Pinero et Roger Chapman
ainsi que le Canadien Dick Zokol. C’est
finalement Roger Maltbie qui a raison des éléments déchaînés, le
tournoi s’étant déroulé sous des trombes d’eau, en terminant en 289
devant Bruce Fleischer et Dick Zokol, Ron Streck et Mike Mc Cullough
s’adjugeant les 4ème et 5ème places.

New champions joined the tournament’s
usual players, and they quickly left their
mark; K. Green, A. Maggee, J. Sluman,
and G. Watine, who was born in Morocco,
along with the Moroccan A. Bendiab.
Finally K. Green, sporting his Harvard look,
captured the title with an excellent 285
ahead of A. Maggee and R. Streck. This
fifteenth edition was a real success thanks
to the participation of many champions
and the presence ofmany enthusiastic fans.

Les nouveaux champions qui rejoignent les habitués du tournoi vont
vite faire parler d’eux : Ken Green, Andy Magee, Jeff Sluman, le Français
Gery Watine, natif du Maroc, et le Marocain Abdallah Bendiab. Après
un duel épique avec Andy Magee, c’est finalement Ken Green aux
allures d’étudiant d’Harvard qui remporte le Trophée avec un excellent
285 devant Andy Magee et Ron Streck. Puis, pendant cinq ans, le
Trophée Hassan II marque une pause afin de favoriser une réflexion
propre à faire de cette épreuve incomparable un outil de promotion du
golf au Maroc, Sa Majesté Hassan II ayant fixé comme objectif prioritaire de faire de ce sport un des atouts de l’offre touristique marocaine.
1991
The twentieth edition presented a very
attractive program. There was an outstanding
field of players with Payne Stewart,
Nick Faldo, Gary Player, Bernhard Langer,
Paul Broadhurst, Bob Toski, the ever faithful
Billy Casper, Roger Chapman and the Swedish
Anders Forsbrand.
Business, political and art celebrities made
an appearance to show their support:
Mr. and Mrs. McGovern, Mr. Walter Forbes,
the famous French jeweller Alain Boucheron,
the Professor and Mrs. Griiscelli, H.R.H.
Prince Poniatowsky, Mr. and Mrs. Etienne
Mougeotte, the Marquis d’Arcangues, His
Excellency Sir Patrich Hillary with his wife,
etc… Guests were presented to His Royal
Highness Prince Moulay Rachid in Marrakesh.
T.V. networks and press from all over the
world covered the tournament and the entire
Moroccan population followed the competition between Payne Stewart and Nick Faldo.
A totally unknown player who came from
the Fiji Islands upset the favorites to win the
title. He was thus awarded the famous golden
dagger, the symbol of the trophy, by H.R.H.
Prince Moulay Rachid. Vijay Singh became
an international sensation virtually overnight,
winning the Masters of Augusta, receiving
the green jacket, and winning many other
big tournaments. He has never forgotten that
his success began in November 1991 on the
Red Course of Dar Es Salam. The Hassan II
Golf Trophy was a star shining in the night
sky for this player.

La 20ème Edition du Trophée Hassan II se présente avec un plateau
extraordinairement alléchant : Payne Stewart, Nick Faldo, Gary Player,
Bernhard Langer sans oublier les Paul Broadhurst, Bob Toski, Billy
Casper le fidèle, Roger Chapman et Anders Forsbrand.
Pas moins de 31 équipes étaient engagées soit 31 Pros et 93 Amateurs.
De grandes personnalités du monde des affaires de la politique et
des arts sont présentes : Mr et Mme Mc Govern, Mr Walter Forbes,
Mr et Mme Alain Boucheron, Le Professeur et Mme Griscelli, le Prince
Poniatowski, Mr et Mme Etienne Mougeotte, le Marquis d’Arcangues,
S.E. et Mme Patrick Hillary…
S.A.R. le Prince Moulay Rachid honore les invités de sa présence à
Marrakech. Tandis que les télévisions et les journalistes du monde entier
relayent l’événement et que le Maroc se passionne pour le duel entre
Payne Stewart et Nick Faldo. Mais à la surprise générale, un inconnu
venu des Iles Fidji (où trouver le drapeau de ce pays) remporte la 1ère
place et reçoit des mains de S.A.R. le Prince Moulay Rachid le fameux
poignard en or. Vijay Singh puisque c’est de lui qu’il s’agit va plus tard
remporter trois tournois majeurs et devenir l’un des meilleurs joueurs
du monde. Le Fidjien n’a jamais oublié que tout commença pour lui en
novembre 1991 sur le parcours Rouge du Royal Golf de Dar Es Salam.

and the golf legend Bob Tosky were among
the list of players this year. They faced
a handful of talented newcomers like Larry
Mize, Rex Caldwell and Mike McCullough,
along with European players such as
Angel Gallardo and the Frenchman Jean
Garaïalde. Among the Moroccan players
were M’barek Mellouki, Messaoud Benrokiya
and others. A new generation was appearing
alongside the very young Pro player,
Mohamed Makroune. Ron Streck ended
up capturing the gold dagger, defeating
Bob Eastwood yet again.
Le regretté Payne Stewart revient “le couteau entre les dents” pour
venger son immense déception de l’année précédente. Pour se faire
il est accompagné de… sa mère, son porte bonheur. Après avoir ravi
les participants en dansant à Marrakech avec les Gnawas, il impose sa
marque sur le Trophée par son charisme et ses tenues impeccables et
triomphe après un play-off avec son compatriote D.A. Weibring, tous
deux ayant conclu les quatre tours avec le score de 281 (-11 sous le par !).
Une couverture médiatique exceptionnelle retransmet l’événement
tout autour de la planète. Le Trophée Hassan II continue à s’inscrire
dans l’excellence et la durée.

It was an uneasy challenge for the
organizing committee to obtain similar
result after the tournament’s past successes.
The field was already an outstanding
one with the attendance of Corey Pavin,
the 1995 U.S. Open and Bob Hope Classic
winner. Scott Hoch, Bruce Fleisher,
Ronan Rafferty, Jean Van de Velde, Lee
Westwood, Ignacio Garrido and Robert
Karlsson also came. Great athletes ready
to compete for a coveted title. Yet, we
must always expect the unexpected! The
total unknown and newlywed Martin Gates
managed to win the trophy. The golden
dagger was quite a wedding gift for him
and his new bride!

Pourtant, le tableau des joueurs invités est exceptionnel puisque l’on
trouve Corey Pavin, vainqueur de l’U.S. Open 1995 et du Bob Hope
Classic. On retrouve également Scott Hoch, Bruce Fleischer, Ronan
Rafferty, Jean Van de Velde, Lee Westwood, Ignacio Garrido et Robert

Auréolé de sa victoire et idole du public marocain, Payne Stewart
revient défendre son titre. Il le fait et avec la manière : 277 soit un
fabuleux -15 sous le par, en reléguant ses poursuivants immédiats, le
Sud-Africain Wayne Westner, Brian Claar et Dillard Pruitt, à 8 coups !
Cette année 1993 connaît également un événement exceptionnel:
l’équipe amateur de Son Altesse Royale le Prince Moulay Rachid avec
Messieurs Bennis Jalil et Omar Lahjhomri remporte le Pro-Am avec le
score extraordinaire de 180, soit 39 sous le par, reléguant les seconds
à 6 coups.
Autre innovation de taille, la transformation de la Coupe de Son Altesse
la Princesse Lalla Meryem, ouverte désormais aux proettes. Et c’est la
grande championne française, Marie-Laure de Lorenzi, qui inaugure le
palmarès de ce tournoi féminin.
C’est Sa Majesté Mohammed VI alors Prince Héritier qui remet les
Trophées aux vainqueurs et, en particulier, à Son Altesse Royale le
Prince Moulay Rachid.

Payne Stewart, a real star in Morocco, came
back as the defending champion. He quickly
reinforced his position as the favorite with an
incredible 277 (-15 under the Par) and easily
overtook the South African Champion
Wayne Westner at 8 shots equal to B. Claar
and D. Pruitt in spite of the attendance of
L. Trevino who also participated in this
edition. The firstedition of the Lalla Meryem
Cup was held in 1993. The famous French
Champion M.L. de Lorenzi won the tournament.
An outstanding event occurred in 1993: in the
Pro-Am, the Amateur team of H.R.H. Prince
Moulay Rachid with B. Jalil and O. Lahjomri
won the Competition with an extraordinary
score of 180, 39 under Par, leaving the second
team at 6 shots. Another important decision
was the transformation of H.R.H. Princess
Lalla Meryem Cup in the Pro-Am to an event
for the Ladies Professional Players. The
famous French Champion M.L. de Lorenzi,
was the first to engrave her name on the prize
list. It was His Majesty King Mohammed VI
himself, a Prince at the time, who awarded the
winners, including H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid.

Cette année-là, le Comité d’organisation fait preuve d’encore plus
d’ambition. Tout simplement en invitant le n°1 mondial 1994 à participer au 24ème Trophée Hassan II. Nick Price, le Zimbabwéen résidant
en Floride, vient pour la première fois au Maroc. C’est tout d’abord
sa simplicité et sa maestria qui conquiert le public marocain. Que
fait-il ensuite malgré les Wayne Westner, Roger Chapman, Christian
Cévaër et autre José-Maria Canizares ? “Veni, Vidi, Vici”. Paraphrasant
Jules César, il vint, il vit, il vainquit. Chez les proettes c’est la gracieuse
Espagnole Amaïa Arruti qui triomphe en play-off.

The organizing committee was even more
ambitious in 1995. They invited Nick Price,
the 1994 world number one to take part
in the Hassan II Golf Trophy. It was the first
visit in Morocco for this Zimbabwean living
in Florida.
The Moroccan public was seduced by his
simplicity and intelligence. Despite the
efforts of Wayne Westner, Roger Chapman,
Christian Cevaer and many other champions
like Jose-Maria Canizares, Nick Price won
in the end. Among Ladies Pros, the young
Spaniard Amaïa Arruti won after a Play Off.

The late Payne Stewart came back with
a thirst for revenge after the huge upset
from last year. He came with his mother
to support him and delighted participants
as he danced with the Gnawas Troop in
Marrakesh. He left his mark on the Trophy
with his charismatic attitude and his

Trophy had to honor the untouchable status
of the tournament. Organizers made their
mark in opposing Tom Lehman, winner
of the Masters and U.S. Open, with the
Scotsman Colin Montgomerie, the long
standing number one player on the P.G.A.
European Tour. Yet Garrido, Westner,
Howell, Hammond and many others were
looking to disrupt this matchup. Finally,
it was Colin Montgomerie who won with
277 leaving Nystrom, Howell and Hammond
3 shots back. Lehman only scored a 282.
No less than twenty-nine teams took part
in the event, an outstanding performance.

Pour la 26ème édition, les organisateurs frappent un grand coup en
opposant Tom Lehman, vainqueur de l’Open britannique, grand champion et homme de cœur à l’Ecossais Colin Montgomerie, l’indéracinable

Cette édition est aussi l’occasion de suivre

A newly fashioned field, mixing newcomers
and tournament legends, was interesting to
consider. Steve Jones, the recent U.S.
Open winner, was one of the favorites along
with Donnie Hammond, Greg Chalmers,
Thomas Levet, the Spaniard Santiago Luna
and Bill Glasson. The career of the young
Moroccan Youness El Hassani was also
closely followed. Four players with one
shot of difference: Santiago Luna, Tom
Pernice, Steve Jones and Stephen Ames
from Trinidad & Tobago. Santiago Luna
eventually won in a play-off against Tom
Pernice. The Trophy was, again, met with
critical acclaim.

This 25th Anniversary of the Hassan II
Golf Trophy was to be extravagantly
celebrated, and thus organizers wanted
to make this jubilee an especially
unique occasion in accordance with the
tournament’s reputation. The following
stars of the Golf World were invited to
Rabat: Sam Torrance, second in the Volvo
Ranking, Craig Stadler, owner of the
Augusta green jacket, Jesper Panevik,
the Swedish Pro with his raised peak cap,
Michael Campbell, Pádraig Harrington and
Ignacio Garrido Villaceros. Outstanding
names for an outstanding event.
Nick Price, who was on top of the leaderboard during 3 rounds, played the
17th hole two shots ahead of Garrido.
He bogeyed the 17 and Garrido birdied.
After a second shot with a ball in the
rough and a missed chip, Nick Price’s
dreams were vanquished, and victory
went to Ignacio Garrido. That victory was
the start of an extraordinary 1997 season
for the winner with a sixth place in the
Volvo Ranking. He was also selected
to play for the European Ryder Cup team
that defeated the American team.

At the beginning of the fourth day of
competition, three players were leading
and fiercely competing for the title;
Roger Chapman, David Sutherland and
Miguel-Angel Martin. Surprisingly the
unknown player Micheel Shaun finished
second owing to a stunning 63 (-10)
in the last round. He finished second
behind a well-known player in Morocco,
Roger Chapman (-15).
At forty years old, he realized the best
season of his long career with a second
victory at the Brazilian Open.

Moroccan citizens were severely hurt with
the loss of their supreme guide, His Majesty
the Late King Hassan II. The king died
on July 28, 1999 and like all of Morocco, the
golfers’ family was plunged into disarray
and despair. His Majesty King Mohammed
VI gave his high recommendations to make
the 28th Hassan II Golf Trophy edition
an incredible event, in accordance with the
late King’s prestige. A high-quality T.V. spot
was created under the recommendations
of H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid and aired
on Moroccan and international T.V.
networks (T.F.1., Canal+, L.C.I., Eurosport).
Big names of Golf came to pay tribute to
His Majesty the late King Hassan II and his
memory.
An outstanding field gathered for this
occasion: Steve Jones, David Toms,

had acquired an inestimable reputation
worldwide, which promoted not only golf
and tourism but also the Kingdom
of Morocco. It was an absolute necessity
to both protect and promote this legacy
of interlacing tradition with constant
innovation. His Majesty King Mohammed
VI asked H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid to
create a specific organization dedicated
to the Hassan II Golf Trophy management
and evolution. The Hassan II Golf Trophy
Association was thus created under the
Presidency of H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid.
The management team quickly launched
the preparations for the 32nd edition of the
tournament. H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid
settled on three main goals: respect for
tradition, innovation, and progress through
excellence. A new concept for relationships
with sponsors was organized based on
a long term “win-win” basis.
All details were carefully reviewed:
the tournament’s program, the hospitality
village, the players’ field, and the Kid’s Cup.
All aspects concerning the Trophy were
improved by a dedicated team. Excellent
results awaited the organizing committee.
With the South African M. Lac Nulty,
S. Lowery, S. Torrance, J. Haegman, M.
Roe, I. Garrido, S. Luna, G. Havret and many
others, the field was impressive.
We witnessed a very interesting show,
where the great S. Luna defeated Steve
Lowery and O. Edmond with 278. Billy
Casper received a state medal from H.R.H.
Prince Moulay Rachid in recognition
of his long term work and devotion
to promoting Morocco in the United States

The new organizing committee of the
Hassan II Golf Trophy wanted to celebrate
the 30th Anniversary of the Trophy in the
best way possible. The events of September
11th were felt all around the world and
the United States quickly reacted, greatly
limiting international travel for U.S. citizens.
Tiger Woods cancelled his participation in
the French Trophy Lancome, and The
Ryder Cup was cancelled. The Moroccan
organizing committee had to react very
quickly as they faced the withdrawal
of American players. Nonetheless a high
quality field was gathered: Roger Chapman,
Santiago Luna, Olivier Edmond, Jean Van
de Velde, with Joakim Haegman were
competing for victory. The always faithful
Billy Casper came with a small delegation
of U.S. amateur players. Eventually the
Swedish Joakim Haegman won with a score
of 284, ahead of Santiago Luna and Mark
Roe both with 285.
This edition should also be characterized
as innovative thanks to the addition of
the Kid’s Cup, a High Recommendation
of H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid. This new
concept, a Clinic with Billy Casper and Jean
Van de Velde, was aimed at encouraging
and supporting young Moroccan golfers.
The success was redoubtable and the
Moroccan public came out in huge numbers.
H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid presented
the awards to the young golfers himself.

2003
The main goal of the Hassan II Golf Trophy
Association was to capitalize on the brilliant
results achieved last year. A very good field
for both men and ladies pros: Luna, Tajima,
Baker, Colsaerts, Chapman, etc. in the men’s
game and De Lorenzi and Head, among
others, for the ladies. A very well designed
hospitality village and high quality media
exposure were the key elements of this
edition. For the first time in the Trophy’s
history a player won three times. This lucky
athlete was none other than Santiago Luna.
2003 | 32E Trophée Hassan II
L’équipe dirigeante de l’A.T.H. a pour objectif essentiel de transformer
l’essai brillamment réussi lors de la 31 ème édition. Pour y parvenir, un
énorme travail a été accompli et les résultats se mesurent à l’aune des
efforts consentis. Le plateau est de qualité aussi bien chez les pros que
chez les “proettes” : Santiago Luna, Peter Baker, Nicolas Colsaerts,
Roger Chapman... chez les messieurs ; Marie-Laure de Lorenzi, tête
de série chez les dames. Un village très réussi et une médiatisation de
qualité, tels sont les composantes de ce succès marqué par la première
passe de trois victoires dans le trophée de l’Espagnol Santiago Luna.

organizing committee’s expertise. Sophie
Sandolo won the H.R.H.

L’organisation est impeccable, le village accueillant et bien organisé, les
compétitions palpitantes que ce soit la Frienship Cup, la Kid’s Cup, les
Pro Am du Trophée et de la Coupe de S.A.R. la Princesse Lalla Meryem.
C’est Sophie Sandolo qui remporte la Coupe de Son Altesse Royale
La Princesse Lalla Meryem. C’est sa première victoire professionnelle.
Cette édition 2006 est aussi marquée par la victoire du capitaine de
l’équipe européenne de Ryder Cup, Sam Torrance. Pourtant senior,
l’Ecossais à la moustache légendaire s’appuie sur sa solide expérience
de la compétition pour dompter ses adversaires et le parcours Rouge.

Pour ce qui est du Trophée Hassan II, victoire de l’Américain Erik
Compton qui joue souvent sur le circuit canadien. Après un dernier
tour passionnant disputé dans des conditions atmosphériques difficiles,
Compton dispose avec un score total de -15 de Philippe Lima, 2
ème
à -10.
A noter la belle performance du jeune Marocain, Younès El Hassani qui,
grâce à sa 8ème place enregistre le meilleur résultat jamais obtenu par
un National dans cette compétition.
The 33rd edition was characterized by
a constant improvement in the team’s
organizational prowess, which made this
event a complete success. Alongside the
Trophy, other events took place apart from
the traditional Lalla Meryem Golf Cup,
which the Spaniard Ana Belen Sanchez
won after a play-off with Rebecca Hudson.
Among the other events we witnessed
the Kid’s Cup, orchestrated by H.R.H.
Prince Moulay Rachid for the champions
of tomorrow, and, for the first time,
the Friendship Cup, a meeting point for
showbiz stars, businessmen, sports and
media representatives. The U.S. player Erik
Compton, from the Canadian circuit, won
after an interesting last round under heavy
showers. He defeated Philippe Lima’s -10
with a score of -15. We must not forget
the impressive result of the Moroccan
player Youness El Hassani, who finished
eighth. Such a finish was the best result
ever obtained by a national player in the
tournament.

le Trophée Hassan II prend un nouveau départ avec l’entrée d’EMAAR
comme sponsor titre et l’épreuve prend le nom de Hassan II Golf Trophy
by EMAAR. Les avantages de ce partenariat sont décisifs : soutien
de Golf in Dubaï, promoteur entre autres du Dubaï Desert Classic, et
recrutement de pros de tout premier ordre que ce soit pour le Trophée
Hassan II ou pour la Coupe de S.A.R. La Princesse Lalla Meryem.
Auréolé de sa victoire à l’Open britannique à Carnoustie, son premier
titre majeur, Pádraig Harrington arrive à Rabat avec un statut de favori.
Malgré une légère blessure au cou contractée lors du pro-am d’ouverture, l’Irlandais ne laisse pas ses adversaires respirer et mène le tournoi
de bout en bout. Et celui qui va devenir la semaine suivante n°1 européen
2007 s’impose avec facilité. Un autre joueur n’est pas prêt d’oublier
cette édition, c’est Fayçal Serghini, auteur d’une 7ème place, la meilleure
d’un Marocain dans l’histoire du Trophée. Chez les Dames, la numéro 1
Européenne, la Française Gwladys Nocera remporte la Coupe de Son
Altesse Royale la Princesse Lalla Meryem.

Thanks to the decisive move taken by
H.R.H. Prince Moulay Rachid, the Hassan II
Golf Trophy made a new beginning with the
entry of EMAAR as title sponsor. The event
was titled the Hassan II Golf Trophy by
EEMAR. The advantages of this partnership
were important. The endorsement of Dubaï
Golf, the promoter of the Dubaï Desert
Classic, amongst others, and the recruitment
of firstrate professional players for the
Hassan II Golf Trophy and the Lalla Meryem
Golf Cup.
The Irish player Pádraig Harrington, ranked
number one in Europe at the time received
the famous golden dagger as a symbol of
his victory.
For the Ladies, the French player Gwladys
Nocera, also ranked number one in Europe,
won the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup.

An important change took place with
the entry of the Hassan II Golf Trophy and
the Lalla Meryem Cup on the European
Tour. The highly qualified selection of
players (104 players representing 30
different nationalities) with several names
among the world’s Top 100, allowed three
national players to participate to the great
event. Two of them made the cut and
ranked honorably. This gave an exceptional
media image of Morocco. The uniqueness of
the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup multiplied
all the assets of the Trophy and honored
the women’s competition. 126 players
came from over 25 countries. The winner
of the Trophy was Rhys Davis from Wales,
and Anja Monke from Germany was
the winner of the Lalla Meryem Cup.
Un changement s’opère avec l’entrée du Trophée Hassan II de Golf et la
Coupe Lalla Meryem à l’European Tour. La grande sélection de joueurs
(104 joueurs représentant 30 différentes nationalités) avec plusieurs
noms parmi les 100 premiers du monde, a permis à trois joueurs nationaux de participer au grand événement. Deux d’entre eux ont fait le cut
et se sont classés honorablement. Ceci a donné une image médiatique
exceptionnelle du Maroc. La specificité de la Coupe Lalla Meryem de
Golf a multiplié les atouts du Trophée
et a honoré la compétition féminine.

Une année après avoir integré le calendrier du EuropeanTour, le
Trophée Hassan II de Golf s’est tenu pour la toute première fois à
l’extérieur de son cours de golf historique, le Golf Royal Dar es Salam
de Rabat. Ça s’est déroulé dans la ville du sud Agadir au Golf prestigieux du Palais Royal et le Golf de l’Océan. La coupe Lalla Meryem a eu
lieu la même semaine précise et dans la même ville au Golf du Soleil.
Ceci est une premiére dans
le monde de golf, puisque les
événements des hommes et
des dames se sont tenus dans
la même semaine et dans la
même ville; L’un fait parti du
European Tour, au moment ou
l’autre l’autre est dans le cadre
du Ladies European Tour.
2011
A year after having entered the European
Tour calendar, the Hassan II Golf Trophy
was held for the very first time outside its
historic golf course, the Royal Golf Dar Es
Salam of Rabat. Instead, it took place in the
southern city of Agadir at the prestigious
Golf du Palais Royal and the Golf de l’Ocean
Courses. The Lalla Meryem Cup took place
the exact same week and in the same city
at the Golf du Soleil. This is a first in the
world of golf because both men’s and ladies
events are held within the same week in
the same city; one is part of the European
Tour while the other is on the Ladies
European Tour.

The Hassan II Golf Trophy Association was
able to capitalize on its partnership with the
Dubaï Golf via EEMAR, with the coming of
professional players like Paul McGinley and
Simon Dyson, as well as the extraordinary
Ernie Els, who, by winning the Hassan II Golf
Trophy, honored his status as a star player.
The Lalla Meryem Golf Cup reached the same
level of prestige with the victory of Laura
Davies, who left her mark on this edition.
Representatives of the PGA European Tour,
as well as the LPGA, were present at this
edition due to their interest in the event and
given that Morocco had hosted the Moroccan
Open in Agadir for the last ten years.

L’édition 2012 du Trophée Hassan II de Golf s’est déroulée du 19 au
25 Mars au Golf du Palais Royal of Agadir. Le prix était estimé à
1.5 million d’Euros et 126 professionnels se sont manifestés pour
concourir pour une telle somme. Le
gagnant de l’édition 2012 Michael
Hoey a décrit : “c’est surréaliste
mais par moments c’est comme
ça pour moi. J’essayais de rester
dans le présent tout le temps éviter
les routines d’un temps à un aure,
“This golf course is great and I always
want to do well when we are playing
a really great course, and I have been lucky
to win on some of the best, especially
at the Dunhill. I think playing great courses
inspires me and that certainly happened
here over the last three rounds.”
“I won on the Challenge Tour in Morocco
four years ago and was fourth in the
Trophee Hassan II a few years ago when it
wasn’t on the Tour schedule, but to win this
tournament now as part of the European
Tour and given the history of the event,
this is pretty special.” “It is a truly beautiful
trophy to receive. It looks so expensive
and I can’t believe I get to keep it. It’s so
nice that you almost don’t want to touch it!”

j’apprécie jouer sur de grands parcours car ils m’inspirent, ce qui est
sûr pour ces trois éditions. J’ai gagné Le Challenge Morocco Tour, il
y a quatre ans et j’étais quatrième au Trophée Hassan II de Golf il y a
quelques années, il ne figurait pas encore sur le calendrier du tournoi
et j’ai pu le gagner en tant que partie du European Tour, en accordant
cette spécifité à l’histoire de l’événement. C’est réellement un beau
trophée à recevoir. Il est précieux à conserver,et c’est tellement beau
qu’on n’oserait pas le toucher.

Ilonen lui donne des soucis et signe 4 birdies en sortant pour retourner
à un coup de tête.
Mais il en fallait plus pour déstabiliser Marcel Siem qui a appelé son
compatriote Bernhard Langer le jour d’avant. Le champion allemand
lui a recommandé de ne rien changer à ses tactiques et de ne pas se
préoccuper du leaderboard sur les 9 premiers trous. Siem a accumulé
deux birdies dans 11 et dans 15 pour reconstituer un peu d’air, et malgré
un ultime Bogey dans 18, après un drive perdu, il gagne la 40ème édition
du Trophée Hassan II de Golf dans 17, trois tirs devant Mikko Ilonen et
David Horsey, le gagnant d’il y a deux ans.
Avec le poignard d’or du gagnant entre les mains et le 49ème classement
de monde, Marcel Siem pourrait rêver de s’envoler à Augusta. Quelques
heures plus tard, le résultat de l’Open de Houston aux Etats Unis classe
l’allemand au top 50 mondial, il est qualifié pour les Masters.
2013
In this beginning of 2013 season, Marcel
Siem’s had a double ambition. To win the
bigtour-nament of the European Tour,
Hassan II Golf Trophy, and open the doors
of the Masters, the major first one of the
year. The first part of the plan took place
almost without incidence. The German
attacks the course of the Golf du Palais
Royal in Agadir straightaway with a first
exemplary score of 64 (8), with 2 eagles
and 5 birdies. Playing in a place usually
closed to the public, the player from
Cologne got perfectly in advance and
remained leader of the tournament.
Only Finnish Mikko Ilonen will worry him
and signs 4 birdies on the way out to return
to a blow of head.
But it needed more to destabilize Marcel
Siem who called his fellow countryman
Bernhard Langer the day before. The German
champion recom-mended him to change
nothing to histactics and not to take care of
the leaderboard on the first 9 holes. Siem
accumulated two birdies in 11 and in 15
to restore a little of air and in spite of an
ultimate bogey in 18, after a lost drive,
he wins the 40th Hassan II Golf Trophy in
17, three shots in front of Mikko Ilonen and
David Horsey, two years ago winner.
With winner’s golden dagger in hands and
49th world ranking, Marcel Siem could
dream of flying to Augusta.
A few hours later, the result of Open of
Houston in The United States classified the
German out of the world top 50 and those
qualified for the Masters…

The 2012 edition of the Hassan II Golf
Trophy took place from March 19th to the
25th in Agadir at the Golf du Palais Royal.
The prize money was set at 1.5 million Euro,
and 126 professional players showed up
ready to compete for such a sum. The 2012
edition winner Michael Hoey described how:
“It’s all a bit surreal at the moment but
it always feels like that for me. I was really
trying to stay in the present all day and go
through the routines of one shot at a time
and everything else and then I was really
surprised to see Damien had dropped shots
as I played the 17th but it was great to have
that three shot lead playing the last.(...)”
