Batteries of the recommended type and size must always be used, according to the settings

Multitone GP and WP pager programming guide
This guide may be used for programming the Multitone GP/GPRS two way pager, and
waterproof POCSAG pager supplied by Multitone electronics for use with Multitone
manufactured paging and messaging products.
Manufacturers name for pagers is Birdy III or Birdy3 and WP. These names are used
throughout the programming guide.

1.0 Programming pagers
In order to program a POCSAG pager, it is necessary to be equipped with:
 USB office programming cradle
 USB cable (Supplied with programming cradle)
 Power adapter (UK or EU) Order separately
 The latest customisation software for pagers

1.2 Computer requirements
The computer has to be equipped with a Windows XP SP2, Vista, or Windows 7 operating
system as well as a free USB port.
1.3 Software Installation
Files necessary for programming the pager, user guides and supporting documentation may
be downloaded from the Multitone web site.
www.waterproofWPpager.com for associated documentation and guides.
Programming software may be obtained from Multitone FTP site. Download files and unzip to
C:\WP pager. Install a shortcut to the desktop for easy access.
Terminology
Pager descriptions in the programming software and for drivers is Birdy III or Birdy WP
Programming
Power on the programming cradle. Connect the USB cable to the cradle and to the computer
USB port. Insert a pager for programming
From the WP pager folder select TPL.EXE and open the programming software.

1.4 Programming software description
The pager programming software is launched by a double click on the software icon
then a window with a number of TABS will be displayed.
In this window are the parameters available for programming any pager.
Some tabs are only displayed for the MODE of operation – GPS or Waterproof pager
Options for fixed or synthesised (WP or WPs).
2.0 Main Menu start screen - GPS and waterproof pagers
The highlighted menu options Files – Dialog with birdie, Mode and Language provides
easy access programming functions for reading and programming the pager as well as tools
to configure and read pager records.
2.1 Tool Bar - GPS and waterproof pagers
The icons are used to read, write or manage pager information and may change according to
the pager type being programmed

The TABS are used to programme each set of features

If you attempt to programme the wrong type of pager
when using the MODE Options you will see the message.

3.0 Main Identity (RIC) settings
This screen is used to programme the identities (RIC’s) and features of the pager.
There are differences between the GP and WP pager main and sub screens.
Where there is a difference it is noted on the screen tab image or notes
The highlighted menus are not available on the GP pager.

4.0 Identities TAB - GP and WP pagers
This window enables configuration of up to 8 identities. An identity is a user or RIC number
and will have 7 digits.
By default only the first identity is enabled and may need to be changed to your
requirements. To add additional identities select the identity check boxes.
There are additional Options for identities on the WP pager.

4.1 Identity Options
Definition:
Allows programming of an Identity (POCSAG User / RIC number)
term identity will be used throughout the rest of this guide.

Identity number
The identity (RIC) number is always 7 digits however when entering the
identity number only provide the last 4 digits for the user number and
preceding system number excluding 0’s.
E.g. Identity 001(System address) 1501 (User number) would be entered as
11501.
4.2 Name - Waterproof pagers
The WP pagers have an additional programmable option for identities address.
Addresses 1 to 8 may have up to 8 alphanumeric characters to describe the identity.
4.3 Identity Options
There are three Options offered by the drop down menu.
 Alerts. (Not available on Identity 1) This is fixed for alert.
 Messages.
 Services.
Options:
Alert
- Enables the use of this Identity as the receiving address for
the POCSAG or GPRS alarm message.
Messages - Enables use of this Identity as the receiving address of
messages not connected with the alarm (specific ring tone
and display). Option to configure Ring is not displayed.
Services - Enables use of this Identity as the receiving address of
service messages (remote deprogramming, positioning
request) Ring and sub address options disabled.
Comment:
The ALARM selection integrates the Options of MESSAGES and
SERVICES.
4.4 Ring Options
Definition:
Selection of the ring tone upon receiving the identity number.

4.5 Vibrator Options
Definition:
Vibrator mode validation upon identity code reception.
Options:
Select the check box for the Options required.

Definition:
The pager will vibrate before the ring tone upon reception of identity code
4.6 Sub Addresses
Definition:
Each identity can have up to four sub addresses. The configuration of the
sub address alert type is set in identity from the drop down menu.
4.6.1 Identity n*1 Sub-addresses A to D
Definition:
Validation of the message format which will be received on sub-address

- Message type is “alphanumeric”
- Message is numeric only. No alpha content

- The pager will no longer receive messages on this

Ensure that the transmitter baud rate, polarity and frequency are the same as
those used on the pager.
4.7 Increment RIC 1 when programming
Definition:
Enables programming of groups of pagers with sequential identities (RIC /
user number) and the same operational parameters. When then first pager
has been programmed successfully then the identity will automatically
increment by n*1.

Waterproof pager only; when the Increment box is checked two other options
become available.
Options:
Identities enabled by user – This allows the user to enable or disable an
identity and therefore be in or out of service. By MENU must be activated.
By Menu – The user may enable or disable the identity from the pager menu.
4.8 Crescendo
Definition:
Options enabling to have the ring volume increase progressively when the
Waterproof pager rings.
Options
Ticked box - active crescendo for associated RIC upon reception of
programmed identity code.

5.0 Programming identity sub addresses
From the menu bar select the Sub-Address Options
5.1 Sub-addresses TAB for Identities n*1 to n*8 (GP and WP pagers)
This message may only be a maximum length of 80
characters
Note:
Fast alert and operational ACK is not available on the WP pager.
Sub-addresses
Definition:
The 4 sub-addresses (Function codes) per programmed Identity provide
additional options per pager. Identities n*1 to n*8 each has 4 sub-addresses
available.
Note:
If nothing is ticked in this window, it doesn’t inhibit the sub-address but
does not use any of the Options.
5.2 Ring
Definition:
Selection of a specific ring tone for this sub-address.
Options:
System (Choice) - Will use the same ring tone as the one used for the
associated Identity address (programmed in the first tab)

- Selection of a specific melody for the ring tone
5.3 Specific parameters
Definition:
Tick this box to enable programming of additional options. If the box is ticked
and a message is received by the pager then the parameters selected will
activate. e.g. the text message will be displayed.

5.3.1 Fast Alert (Not available on the WP pager)
Definition:
Alert sent to a sub RIC without a message first, followed by a second call with
a text message (Requires paging management system support)
The first call will not cause an acknowledgement to be sent until the second
call and message is received.
Option:
Tick the box to enable function
5.3.2 Operational ACK (Not available on the WP pager)
Definition:
If ticked the automatic acknowledgement is disabled. When enabled an
automatic acknowledgement that the message has been received will be
sent via GPRS back to the management system.
Options:
Tick the box to disable the function
5.3.3 Message
Definition:
Enables or disables the display of the message sent by the transmitter.
Options:
Yes / No
Note:
Maximum of 80 characters may be displayed
6.0 Multiple centres tab (GPS / GPRS only)
Note: This feature is designed for fire fighters where they may be a member of several
teams but could be used by any emergency service where the user has multiple team
membership and the possibility of a GSM network failing is not acceptable.
This tab in conjunction with other Options enables a user who belongs to several rescue or
emergency centres to manage his availability for each centre. A maximum of five centres n*1
to n*5 can be defined.

6.1 Multiple centres validation
Definition:

Tick the box for “Several centres enabled” to activate this Option.

Definition:
Definition of the identification number of the rescue centre

Note:
This identification number must match the numbering on the central
management system. E.g.: If the number is not held in the management
system database for the correct team then the pager will not be available.
6.2 Name
Definition:
The rescue centre name (this name will be used again within the menu)

7.1 Alert duration - in seconds, vibrator and/or ring tone
Definition:
This window allows the programming of different parameters related to
your alert network.
Selection of the duration of the ring tone when receiving an identity code.

Option:
Programme the ring or vibrate duration between 1 and 99 seconds.
Note:
This duration is then allocated to each address (Global).
7.2 Crescendo duration in seconds only available in Waterproof mode
Definition:
Selection of the crescendo duration when receiving a programmed identity
code.
Options:
Programme the ring tone duration from 1 to 99 seconds
Note:
This duration is allocated to the addresses in which the crescendo is active.
The crescendo enables a ring tone volume to increase progressively.
7.3 Duration of vibrator before ring tone
Definition:
Selection of the duration of the vibrator before the ring tone when receiving
identity code.
Options:
1 to 59 - It is possible to program the vibrator duration from 1 to 59 seconds.
Note:
This duration has to be lower than the alert duration by 1 second minimum.
The validation of this duration can be made in the first tab.
7.4 Reminder of unread message
Definition:
Enables a pager alert (2 bips) to indicate the reception of an unread message
in a timed period.
Options:
Disabled
Active/15s

Note:
Once all the messages have been read, the pager stops beeping.
- No reminder sound for unread messages
- The pager will beep twice every 15 seconds
- The pager will beep twice every 30 seconds
- The pager will beep twice every 1 minute
- The pager will beep twice every 2 minutes
7.4.1 Number (Of reminders)
Definition:
Limits the number of reminders for unread messages
Options:
10 to 250
- Selection of the number of repetitions by increments of 10.
Permanent
- The reminder beep will stop once all the messages have
been read.
7.5 Duplicate messages
Definition:
Prevents the pager ringing when receiving the same message.
For example when the paging network uses POCSAG repeaters.
Options:
Inactive
- The pager rings each time it receives a message.
Active/1min - The pager will not take into account the repeated.

7.6 New message
Definition:
Indicates the method of saving repeated messages.
e.g. having the same text.
Options:
Ticked - The repeated message will be saved as a new message, within the
memory.
Un-ticked - The repeated message will be saved by overwriting the previous
message.
7.7 Last 10 messages not erasable
Definition:
Prevent erasing by the user of the latest 10 received messages.
Options:
Tick the box to activate.
7.8 Message considered read by the first keyboard action.
Definition:
If the box is ticked then any key pressed will mark the message as
read. If the box is not ticked then the pager menu must be used to
acknowledge the message.
Options:
Tick the box for any key message read
7.9 Keyboard sound
Definition:
Validation of any key pressed by a beep tone.
Options:
Ticked - Each pressing on a key is indicated by a tone.
Un-ticked - No tone when pressing a key.
7.10 Use LED with the support
Definition:
Enables the use of the flashing LED when the pager is in the charging
cradle. When a message is received the LED will flash.
Options:
Ticked - Use of the LED.
Un-ticked - LED not used.
7.10.1 With user menu
Definition:
Choice of using the cradle LED light indicator through the user menu.
Management through the pager menu of charger flashing LED.
Options:
Ticked - This function is present within the menu.
Unticked - Function not available in the pager menu

7.11 SOS (GP pagers only)
Definition:
Activation of the SOS function by long press (10 s) on the key
button. An
alert is sent from the GP pager to the control room as an SOS alert (assault,
accident…etc). This alert is geo-localized.
Options:
Ticked - Validation of the SOS functionality
Un-ticked - SOS functionality disabled
7.11.1 Soundless (GP pagers only)
Definition:
The pager will not sound an SOS alert tone when the SOS button is
pressed (Silent alarm).
Options:
Ticked - Initiate an SOS message without any sound being heard
from the pager.
Un-ticked - When sending the SOS, a loud alert tone can be heard from the
pager in order that the user knows that the SOS mode is activated.
7.12 Low battery alert
Definition:
Validates a sound indication when the battery level reaches a low level and it
needs to be charged or changed.
Options:
Disabled or 1, 2, 3 or 4 minute time-lag for the repetition of the low
battery warning.
7.12.1 Time period of validation
Definition:
The time range for the validation of this alarm can be programmed. This
Defines the time period when the low battery alert will be heard.
E.g.: Allows the low battery alert to be heard in working hours.

7.13 POCSAG
Definition:
Management of the settings for POCSAG. If the pager is a crystal version
then some Options will not be programmable.
7.13.1 Reversed polarity
Definition:
Validation of the reversed polarity of the POCSAG frames used in your alert
network.
Options:

- Reversed polarity validated
- Normal polarity
7.13.2 Speed (Bauds)
Definition:
Programming of the speed of the POCSAG frames.

7.13.3 Radio frequency (MHz)
Definition:
This option is only available for a synthesised pager and allows the pager
to be programmed within the frequency band range available.
For example - WP Waterproof VHF Pager band (143-151MHz)
7.13.4 Out of range notification
Definition:
This allows the pager to alert the user if out of range of the paging or
system through loss of the “Heartbeat” signal for a set time.
Options:
This option is not available on a GP pager.
For a WP pager select from the Options of “Disabled” or a time period
between 1 minute and 9 minutes for the alert tone
7.14 Quiet period
Definition:
Allows the pager to be programmed to be “Silent” during specific time periods.
The pager won’t ring and won’t vibrate upon reception of a message but will
save the received message(s). No sound or visual indication will be sent
during the programmed time slot.
Options:
Ticked – Programme the function for a silent period.
From: “Hrs” – “Mins”
To:
“Hrs” – “Mins”
Unticked - Mute time slot disabled.
7.15 Using the contact relay on the charger
Definition:
If the pager is in the charger, and the relay contact is enabled and is
connected to an external alarm or device then an audio or visual alarm
can be generated.
Options:
Ticked - Enables the function
 Closures number - Number of closures of the relay contact upon
reception of one of the programmed Identity (RIC)
 Closing time
- Closing duration (in secs). Duration of the closing
time of the relay contacts
 Opening time
- Opening duration (in secs). Duration of the
opening of the relay contact between two closings
Note:
Details of the relay contact connections are included in appendix 1
7.16 Enabled menus
Definition:
Selection of the menus that will be active in the pager that the user may
change. Tick the box to enable the function.
Options:
Messages lock – Allows the user to save one or several
messages in order not to delete them through the function “delete all”

Zoom choice – Allows the user to choose the size of the characters in a
message.
Vibrator – Allows the user to select the ring and vibrate mode:
- Programmed ring tone without vibrate
- Vibrate only
- Ring tone + vibrator
- Vibrate followed by ring
Shut down – Allows the user to switch off the pager. If not enabled the user
can not turn the pager off.
Time setting – Allows the user to change the time and summer time.
Alarm – Allows the user to programme an alarm clock.
Language – Allows the user to change the pager language
Quiet period – Allows the user to program a time slot during which the
pager won’t ring and won’t vibrate upon reception of a message. The
pager will save the received message(s) but no sound or visual indication will
be sent during the programmed time slot.
Period for low battery alert – Allows the user to define the time slot during
which the pager won’t take into account the low battery warning.
E.g.; Off duty or after working hours.

Selects the default size of characters displayed for a message.

8.9 Lighting contrast on the LCD
Definition:
Sets the default contrast level on the LCD screen.

1 to 15: 1 is the lowest level possible of contrast and 15 is the strongest.

In order to have always a visible screen, the pager automatically updates the
contrast according to the temperature and the battery voltage.

Each profile can contain up to eight different identities (RIC’s). An identity
must be enabled in Identities tab for a “concerned identity” to be enabled

Concerned identities – Select the identities (RIC’s) to be added to the

16.0 Firmware update
New releases of firmware will be made available to customers via the Multitone web site.
In order to update your pager software:
 Connect programming cradle and power supply (see diagram, page 3)
 Open the programming software and backup the existing profile.
 Select “Dialog with birdie”
 Or select the shortcut icon “Update Ctrl + U” at the bottom of the screen
 Update software with a new file (Ctrl + U)

Browse to the new software and “SELECT” followed by “OPEN” to start firmware load.

A progress bar displays the updating status (about 45 seconds). All the selection fields are
then shaded and the updating file previously selected is visible next at the bottom of the
screen. This shows the status of the firmware load
When the software updating is completed, click on “OK” in the window which appears on the
screen.





The pager is automatically launched after the update (sound, vibrator, LED) In order to
check if the update has been loaded correctly.
Take the pager out of the programming cradle.
The pager starts automatically.
The first line will display the software version installed which should match the version
loaded.
If the version has not been updated go through the process again.
