Préambule
Le projet du Lycée Français de Chicago est d’éduquer les élèves, de la petite section
de maternelle à la terminale, au moyen d’un enseignement bilingue rigoureux basé sur
le système éducatif français menant au baccalauréat comme fondement, un solide
programme américain et une formation menant au baccalauréat international. Cet
enseignement est dispensé au sein d’une communauté solidaire et multiculturelle
qui encourage les élèves à devenir des citoyens du monde responsables.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Lycée Français de Chicago is to educate children pre-K
through 12 with a rigorous dual-language curriculum grounded in the
French educational system, complemented by a strong American program
and the International Baccalaureate, within an engaged multicultural
community that encourages students to become responsible global citizens.

Chers amis,
Pour nous, alors que nous entamons une nouvelle année dans la vie du Lycée, il
est toujours intéressant de suivre le parcours et de prendre des nouvelles de nos
Anciens élèves. Au fil de ces pages, vous serez impressionnés et probablement
surpris par la variété des parcours, éducationnels et professionnels, suivis par nos
‘’jeunes Anciens’’ après avoir obtenu leur diplôme dans notre établissement.
A l’évidence, ces jeunes professionnels sont sur la voie du succès. Nous sommes
heureux de savoir que leur expérience au sein du Lycée a eu une influence
significative sur leurs choix d’études ou d’activité. A l’aube d’un déménagement
vers notre nouvelle adresse, dans le quartier de Lincoln Square en 2015, nous
demeurons la meilleure école internationale de Chicago et le seul établissement
de ce genre dans la région. Le Lycée se développe, je suis donc certain qu’à l’avenir
nous ne manquerons pas d’Anciens pour représenter dignement notre école.
J’espère que, comme moi, vous trouverez ces profils très intéressants. Nous
sommes fiers de leur parcours et de leurs accomplissements, de leur esprit
d’aventure et de leur volonté de réussir sur la scène internationale.

Dear Friends,
As we enter another year in the life of the Lycée, it is always exciting to see what our
graduates are up to. While you look through this publication, you will be impressed
and perhaps surprised to see the variety of educational and professional paths
that some of our young alumni have chosen since graduating from the Lycée.
It is clear that these individuals are bound for accomplished careers, and we are
happy to know that their experiences here at the Lycée have greatly impacted their
own fields. As the Lycée prepares for a move to our brand-new home in Lincoln
Square in 2015, we continue to be Chicago’s premier international school and the
only one of its kind in the region. I am confident that we will have no shortage of
alumni to feature as our school continues to grow.
I hope you find these profiles of some of our featured alumni as interesting as I
have. We are proud of their many endeavors, their sense of adventure, and their
commitment to achieving success on a global stage.

Marion Duquesnoy
Promotion 2007
Entrée au Lycée en CP, Marion a appris très tôt à apprécier la diversité culturelle:
« J’avais des copains français et américains. C’était un bon mélange, qui faisait du
Lycée un lieu intéressant à fréquenter. » Durant ses années passées au Lycée,
Marion a vu l’école se développer et ses rapports avec des copains du monde
entier se renforcer à mesure que l’effectif grandissait. Cette augmentation
de la fréquentation a permis au Lycée de multiplier les options scolaires et
sportives, de même que les activités parascolaires. Heureuse à l’idée d’étendre
ses connaissances et son expérience en dehors de la classe, Marion s’est inscrite
pour le football où son coach (qui était aussi son professeur de mathématiques)
est devenu son mentor, l’aidant à trouver le juste équilibre entre les études et le
sport.
Marion a constaté que les enseignants faisaient un véritable effort pour établir
un contact personnel avec chaque élève - un aspect de l’éducation au Lycée qui
a aidé Marion à entrer au célèbre Lycée St. Louis à Paris. Après deux années en
classes préparatoires, elle a passé une série difficile d’examens et d’entretiens
d’admission à l’EDHEC (École des Hautes Études Commerciales). En participant aux processus d’admission
à diverses écoles d’ingénieur et de commerce, Marion a pu mesurer la spécificité de son éducation :
En 2011-2012, toujours dans le cadre de ses études,
Marion a suivi des stages professionnels en France
et aux États-Unis, chez la banque franco-belge Dexia
dans un premier temps, puis chez Akuo Energy, une
société internationale spécialisée dans les énergies
renouvelables. Son éducation et ses expériences
professionnelles multinationales font de Marion une
actrice compétitive du monde sans cesse renouvelé
des affaires internationales dans lequel elle envisage
de mener une carrière des deux cotés de l’Atlantique.

Marion Duquesnoy
Class of 2007
Starting her Lycée education in the first grade, Marion
was able to develop an early appreciation for different
backgrounds: “I had both French and American friends. It
was a really good mix and made the Lycée an interesting
place to be.” In her time at the Lycée, Marion saw the school
blossom, and as Marion’s class size increased, so did her
connections with friends from around the world. A larger
student body also gave the Lycée the ability to expand its
academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. Excited at
the prospect of increasing her knowledge and experience
beyond the classroom, Marion signed up for soccer, and her
coach (who was also her math teacher) became her mentor,
helping her learn how to balance the busy aspects of her life
from academics to athletics.
Marion recognized that teachers made a genuine effort to
connect with students on a personal level, an innate aspect of a Lycée education that helped Marion gain
acceptance to the reputable Lycée St. Louis in Paris, France. After graduating from college, she went on
to pass a rigorous set of exams and interviews

Willa Frej
Promotion 2009
Qu’il s’agisse de travailler pour défendre les droits de réfugiés ouest-africains,
de collaborer avec le journaliste Fareed Zakaria ou d’embrasser le rôle de chef de
campagne pour un gouvernement étudiant à Yale, Willa Frej a été amenée à parcourir
le monde à quatre continents des programmes d’été en Kazakhstan et en Croatie,
à être bénévole en Sénégal, à travaillant comme stagiaire à New York. En 1995 sa
mère, Nancy Lerner Frej, a participé à la fondation de l’école, Willa entrant au Lycée
l’année de l’inauguration de la Maternelle. L’intérêt de Willa pour le développement
international s’est éveillé durant ses années parmi nous pendant un séjour d’été au
Sénégal. « Mon séjour au Sénégal a été très intéressant car il m’a permis d’utiliser
mes connaissances linguistiques dans un autre contexte et une autre culture que celle
de la France. » A son retour, elle a commencé à travailler sur un projet de traduction
mené par David Berten, parent du lycée, pour le Centre juridique pour les immigrants,
association qui conseille les demandeurs d’asile.
L’année dernière à Yale, Willa a poursuivi son travail d’assistance aux émigrés en
travaillant avec des réfugiés d’Afrique de l’ouest installés à New Haven (dans le Connecticut), et a ressenti
de plein fouet cette dichotomie entre leurs vies et celle des étudiants de Yale « c’est extrêmement
déroutant, mais j’aime cette interaction avec des personnes qui appartiennent à des univers très
différents. »
Willa a pu également satisfaire son goût pour l’international à l’occasion d’un stage à CNN, dans l’émission
“Global Public Square” avec Fareed Zakaria, journaliste et analyste politique renommé. Chaque semaine
elle devait effectuer des recherches et proposer des sujets pour une partie de l’émission et plusieurs de
ses idées ont ainsi abouti à un reportage. « Ça a été une expérience formidable qui m’a permis de concilier
mon parcours académique avec un environnement professionnel très dynamique. »
Willa travaille actuellement à MSNBC en tant que Productrice Associée du programme Ronan Farrow
Daily. Elle souhaite poursuivre une carrière dans
les relations internationales, et elle remercie le

Willa Frej
Class of 2009
Advocating on behalf of East-African Refugees, serving
as a campaign manager for a student government race at
Yale University, and pitching ideas to Fareed Zakaria – Willa
Frej’s experiences have taken her from Chicago to the East
Coast to Africa. Willa’s mother, Nancy Lerner Frej, helped
found the school in 1995, and not long after, Willa started at
the Lycée in its inaugural Maternelle class. Willa’s interest
in international development began during her time at the
Lycée: after going to Senegal on a summer trip in early high
school, she began working in translation. “Senegal was really
exciting because I got to harness my language skills in a
totally different place and culture than what I was used to
while traveling in France.” When she returned from Senegal,
she became a student liaison to the Immigrant Justice Center,
a group that provides legal services for asylum seekers.
Willa continued her advocacy work as a senior last year at Yale University. She worked with West African
refugees who have moved to New Haven, Connecticut, and noticed that the dichotomy between their lives
and those of Yale students is “extremely jarring, but I like that I can connect with people from a completely
different walk of life.”
Willa’s international focus continued as an intern at CNN’s “Global Public Square” with Fareed Zakaria, a
renowned political analyst and journalist. At CNN, she had weekly research tasks where she pitched ideas
for a segment of the show, and several of her pitches even made it on air. “It was an amazing intersection
between academics and a fast-paced environment.”
Willa is currently at MSNBC as an Associate Producer at Ronan Farrow Daily. She aspires one day to
continue in international relations, attributing

Gabriel Guillaud
Promotion 2008
De la philosophie aux mathématiques et de la France au Japon, les passions de
Gabriel Guillaud sont aussi diverses que ses expériences. Il a obtenu, avec les
honneurs, son diplôme de Sciences politiques et d’Études japonaises à l’université
DePaul en 2012 après avoir passé deux semestres à l’université de Sophia à
Tokyo. Aujourd’hui, il met en pratique ses compétences variées pour percer dans
le monde de la finance à Tokyo tout en entamant de nouvelles études pour obtenir
son mastère.
Gabriel Guillaud fut l’un des premiers élèves à avoir suivi le cursus du Lycée de la
maternelle à la terminale. Il se souvient que « le moment venu, la plupart de mes
copains ont choisi d’entrer dans un lycée américain, mais j’ai choisi de rester au
Lycée pour être bien préparé pour l’université en France et aux États-Unis. » Gabriel
ajoute que cette décision lui a permis d’atteindre un niveau de connaissances qui
s’est révélé être un véritable atout par rapport aux autres étudiants à l’université.
Titulaire d’un bac S Gabriel ne s’en est pas moins nourri de littérature et de
philosophie au Lycée : « Je ne sais pas où l’on peut trouver des enseignants plus
motivés, compétents et aux connaissances aussi riches qu’au Lycée. À l’université DePaul, peu d’entrants
avaient suivi des cours de philosophie, alors que j’avais déjà lu les textes de Descartes, Voltaire, Rousseau,
Sartre et Nietzsche. »
C’est ce type d’immersion intellectuelle qui a
poussé Gabriel à explorer la polyvalence dans
son parcours professionnel. Il note par ailleurs
que son éducation linguistique au Lycée lui
a donné une idée de ce que signifie vraiment
l’adaptation à un nouveau pays, qualité qui lui
sert actuellement à Tokyo :

identité. C’est difficile, parfois
même douloureux, mais tellement
gratifiant. »

Gabriel Guillaud
Class of 2008
From philosophy to mathematics and from France to Japan,
Gabriel Guillaud’s interests are as diverse as his experiences.
He graduated with honors in Political Science and Japanese
Studies from DePaul University in 2012 after spending two
semesters at Sophia University in Tokyo. Now, he is using
his varied skills to enter the market research field in Tokyo
while applying to advanced degree programs.
Gabriel Guillaud was one of the first students to attend the
Lycée from Kindergarten through his senior year of high
school. He remembers that “in 8th grade most of my friends
chose to attend American high schools, but I chose to stay
at the Lycée in order to be easily suited for college in France
or the United States.” Gabriel notes that this decision gave
him a depth of knowledge that put him at an advantage
over his peers in college. Gabriel passed the French Bac in
Science, and yet the Lycée also prepared him for
courses in literature and philosophy: “I cannot

Ninive Mbarga
Promotion 2003
La culture et le sens de la communauté ont toujours fait partie intégrante de la vie
de Ninive Mbarga. Arrivée aux États-Unis tout droit de Yaoundé (Cameroun) à l’âge
de 14 ans, elle est entrée au Lycée deux semaines plus tard. Si elle a naturellement
eu du mal à s’adapter à son nouvel environnement, elle n’a pas tardé à trouver ses
marques. Entrée au Lycée en classe de première, Ninivey passa le bac français à
l’âge de 16 ans – la plus jeune de sa classe à le faire. L’attention personnalisée dont
elle a fait l’objet au Lycée lui a permis d’apprendre à un niveau à la fois approprié et
exigeant, et elle trouva en la personne de Madame Chalier un mentor qui la guida
au travers d’un cursus rigoureux et l’aida dans sa préparation aux examens : « Elle
croyait en moi malgré mon jeune âge. Elle me donnait des devoirs en plus pour être
sûre que je comprenne tout – elle m’a vraiment encouragée. »
Ninive a obtenu un diplôme universitaire en business et informatique, suivi d’un
mastère en informatique. Elle est aujourd’hui ingénieur en performance logiciels
à Wellpoint (Illinois), où elle travaille sur des logiciels médicaux dans un domaine,
celui de la technologie, qui évolue à un rythme effréné. Ninive aime la nature
pratique de l›informatique et crédite le Lycée de lui avoir instillé les valeurs et les compétences qui lui ont

Culture and community have always been a part
of Ninive Mbarga’s life. She moved to the United
States from Yaunde, Camaroon, at age 14 and
started at the Lycée two weeks later. At first, it was
hard for her to adjust to her new environment, but
it did not take long for her to become acclimated.
Ninive started in Première and passed the French
Baccalaureate at age 16 – the youngest in her
class to do so. The Lycée’s individualized attention
gave Ninive the opportunity to learn on a level that
was both appropriate and challenging, and she
was happy to find a mentor in Madame Chalier,
who helped her with the rigorous coursework and

the Lycée… I came from a country of over 300 dialects, so thank goodness we all knew French!” Just like at
the Lycée, Ninive’s ability to adapt will continue to help her shine in the expanding world of IT.
Jonathan Pilault
Promotion 2008
L’esprit d’entreprise de Jonathan apparut dès le lycée. En terminale, il suivit un cours
d’informatique qui éveilla son intérêt pour ce domaine et l’incita à consolider plus
avant ses connaissances. « J’ai eu l’opportunité de visiter un laboratoire biomédical
à Northwestern University, chose que peu de lycéens ont la possibilité de faire. Ce
contact avec des professionnels a eu une importance déterminante. » Aujourd’hui,
en tant que consultant d’analyse décisionnelle et commerciale à Bell, Jonathan
influence les chefs d’entreprise dans les décisions strategiques importantes,
tout en continuant de suivre les dernières tendances dans son domaine. Il crédite
l’éducation du lycée comme fondation de son succès commentant « l’enseignement
français des mathématiques et des sciences est très structuré et favorise
l’acquisition d’outils et de qualités essentielles à la résolution de problèmes. »
Les résultats que Jonathan a obtenus au lycée lui ont permis d’entrer à l’université
en deuxième année, au cours de laquelle il a excellé, se plaçant parmi les meilleurs
élèves de sa classe. Pour lui, la structure même du Lycée français fut essentielle à
sa réussite:

Se penchant sur ses années de lycée, Jonathan remarque
que « les deux dernières années furent les meilleures, »
c’est en effet durant celles-ci que les élèves ressentent
pleinement leur appartenance à la communauté – ils
consolident les liens déjà construits et prennent leur
place en tant que leaders au sein de l’école, gagnent en
assurance et développent les qualités de communication
dont ils auront besoin une fois leur diplôme en poche.

Au lycée, Jonathan est parvenu à concilier excellence
académique et investissement dans la vie de
l’école (journal de l’école, présidence du conseil des
élèves). Et, alors que ses centres d’intérêt se sont
développés, Jonathan a réussi à conserver intacts son
sens de l’engagement et sa soif de responsabilités.
Parallèlement à son travail chez Bell, Jonathan est ainsi
consultant bénévole pour l’organisation Bénévoles d’affaires et d’ajouter « le Lycée fut l’endroit idéal pour
cultiver mes centres d’intérêt et mes expériences, » un atout garant de son succès à long terme dans le
secteur des stratégies d’enterprise.

Jonathan Pilault
Class of 2008
Jonathan Pilault’s entrepreneurial energy was apparent as
early as high school. During his senior year, he enrolled in
a computer science course that piqued his interest in the
field and allowed him to access the subject at a higher level:
“I got to tour a biomedical lab at Northwestern University,
which is not something that high school students usually
get the chance to do. The exposure to professionals in the
field and networking was hugely important.” Now, working in
Commercial Insights and Business Analytics at Bell, Jonathan
crafts corporate strategies and influences top executives, all
the while keeping his finger on the pulse of emerging business
trends. He credits his high school curriculum as foundational
to his success, saying “The French way of teaching math and
science is very structured and really helps develop problem
solving skills.”
Jonathan’s high school coursework gave him enough
credit to enter college as a sophomore, where he
vaulted to the top 10 percent of his class. Jonathan
cites the structure of the Lycée as critical to his
ability to succeed, noting:
Jonathan is a prime example of the enthusiasm with
which alumni embrace professional life. Looking back
on his high school experience, Jonathan reflects that
“the last two years were the best years,” as it is during
this time when students feel the strongest sense
of community – students solidify the relationships
they have built and step into place as leaders of the
school, gaining the confidence and interpersonal
skills they will need after graduation.
“The French educational rigor
combined with the American

leadership-enhancing activities
at the Lycée that you don’t find
in a typical French school, but
you do find in a typical American
school. It’s a great blend of both.”
In high school, Jonathan balanced working for the school newspaper, serving as student body president, and
excelling in the classroom. And while his interests have developed, Jonathan’s appetite for involvement and
leadership is unchanged: in addition to his work at Bell, Jonathan is a consultant volunteer for Bénévoles
d’affaires. Jonathan notes that “the Lycée was the place to cultivate my interests and experiences,” and
prepare him for continued success in the field of corporate strategy.
Gaétan de la Vauvre
Promotion 2003
Même aux commandes d’un avion à 3600 m d’altitude, Gaétan de la Vauvre se
souvient des expériences qui lui ont permis de garder les pieds sur terre. Après
ses études à l’université Embry Riddle, Gaétan a décroché son mastère en
sciences aérospatiales, sécurité aérienne et management. Aujourd’hui, Gaétan
est consultant chez Ubifrance, l’Agence française pour le développement
international des entreprises. Là, Gaétan accompagne les petits et les grands
fabricants de l’aérospatiale dans leurs projets d’export vers l’Amérique du nord.
Le Lycée a donné à Gaétan la préparation essentielle à une vie professionnelle
trépidante : « Mes études m’ont permis d’atteindre un niveau d’éducation unique
– j’avais beaucoup d’avance sur les autres. Vous êtes qui vous êtes en fonction du
lycée et de l’université que vous choisissez. »
Du lycée, Gaétan a gardé le souvenir de l’influence qu’ont eu sur lui certains de ses
professeurs et de la manière dont ils l’ont aidé à en arriver là où il est aujourd’hui:
Aujourd’hui, Gaétan est président de l’Association des
anciens élèves du Lycée, pilote commercial certifié qui
vole pour le plaisir et bénévole pour Ronald McDonald
House, association qui aide les familles des enfants
hospitalisés. Tout comme ses professeurs du Lycée,
Gaétan s’investit dans l’amélioration du bien-être de
son prochain, ce qui fait de lui un jeune professionnel
que l›on n’est pas près d’oublier.

Where are they now?
Class of 2003
Even while flying a plane 12,000 feet in the air, Gaétan de
la Vauvre remembers the experiences that have kept him
grounded. After graduating from Embry Riddle University,
Gaétan went on to achieve a Master’s degree in Aerospace
Science and Safety Aviation. Now, Gaétan is a Senior
Trade Advisor at UBIfrance, an international trading
company in downtown Chicago. At UBIfrance, Gaétan
creates relationships between large and small aerospace
manufacturers across France and America. The Lycée gave
Gaétan essential preparation for his bustling professional
life: “The Lycée helped me get more credits and a higher level
of education – I was way ahead of everyone. You are who you
are because of the Lycée and the university you choose.”
During high school, Gaétan calls to mind the impact his
teachers had, and how they helped him get to where he is
today:
Now, Gaétan is President of the Lycée Alumni
Association, a certified commercial pilot who
flies in his free time, and a volunteer at the
Ronald McDonald House, where he helps families
of children who have been hospitalized. Just like
his teachers at the Lycée, Gaétan is invested in
improving the well-being of others, making him
a young professional that others will not quickly
forget.
