Social Security
Social Security offers the reimbursement of health expenses. In France, it is compulsory. To benefit from Social Security, you must
affiliate to an authorized structure: Student social security, Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM) or Régime Social des
Indépendants (RSI)
Affiliation to student social security depends of your status and/or age on August, 31 st 2017:


You will be under 28 on August 31st, 2017: you do not correspond to the specific cases listed below, then your affiliation
to the student social security is compulsory
You will be over 28 on August 31st, 2017, and if you do not correspond to the specific cases listed below, you can
benefit from social security rights during your PhD studies for 4 years as from the academic year during which you turned
28 and if you started your PhD studies before your 28th birthday.
CASES OF EXEMPTION FROM AFFILIATION TO STUDENT SOCIAL SECURITY:
 You have a paid employment in France, with a working contract covering at least the period from September 1st, 2016
to August 31st, 2017, with no interruption, and if you work between 150 hours/trimester and 600 hours/year. If so, you
are automatically affiliated to the General Social Security Service
- > Please add to your file your working contract
 You are a foreign student coming from the Economic European Area or Switzerland - > Please add to your file your valid
European Social Security Card or your affiliation certificate
 You have a scholarship that exempts you from paying the social Security fees
- > Please add to your file a scholarship certificate mentioning the exemption of the student social security fees. Without
this certificate on registration, you will have to pay for Social security. It could be reimbursed, by simple request and after
the presentation of the certificate.
 You are registered in several French higher education institutions: you have to pay for social security only once, on your
first registration.
- > Please add the certificate of payment in the first French higher education institution
WHEN AND HOW TO AFFILIATE TO THE SOCIAL SECUIRTY?
Affiliation to Social Security is done at the same time as your registration to PhD studies. You need to choose between 2 social
security centers:
www.vittavi.fr/
www.lmde.com/
The center will reimburse you of your health expenses and will give you a social security number. The subscription for the
academic year 2016-2017 is 215 euros. This amount will be paid at the same time as the tuition fees.
YOU ARE A FOREIGN STUDENT COMING FROM OUTSIDE THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA AND
SWITZERLAND:
As you study in France, you need to affiliate to Social Security to be reimbursed for your health expenses. Students from the
European Economic Area and Switzerland must affiliate if they meet the affiliation conditions.
Please log on the Vittavi or LMDE website for any information concerning the French social security system and learn more about
their offers and services:
www.vittavi.fr/

Credits for doctoral training
In addition to their research work, and throughout their thesis, all PhD students must follow specific training (100 hours).
If the 100 hours are not followed, the thesis director may not accept the thesis defense. These specific trainings are
divided as follows:
 1/3 of professional training managed by the Collège Doctoral. The focus is on the preparation of the
professional integration, the understanding of the academic world, the internationalization of research and on
the understanding of businesses and entrepreneurship. Languages are also proposed in formation as PhD
students are often asked to publish and communicate in workshops or congresses in French or English. You
can find our training catalogue on the Collège Doctoral website : www.collegedoctoral.unilim.fr
 1/3 of specialized training organized by the research units. Their objective is to give students specific
knowledge linked with their research project. They may consist of congresses, workshops, study sessions in
France or abroad, or be linked to the activities of the research unit.
 1/3 of thematic training which aim to extend the spectrum of knowledge and the scientific training of the PhD
students. They are organized by the Doctoral Schools, often as seminaries regrouping all the PhD students of
the COMUE Léonard de Vinci
