The Malabar Company appeared in 1981, on the Mediterranean coast, bathed in the Catalonian and Languedoc cultures.
Composed of a collective of multi-talented theatrical and visual artists from all over Europe, the company has,
from its earliest days, always rejected any space where the show is enclosed. By creating a fantastic universe in
the street, MALABAR brings urban shows in perpetual motion where the priority is the interaction with the
audience.
Ambassador of street theatre and circus arts from the South of France, Malabar is recognized today thanks
to its permanent capacity of adaptation to hosts expectations and to the character of cultural events and its
permanent imagination to build new projects including for huge cultural events.
Opening or closing shows of festivals, biggest shows of a cultural program… Malabar is acting everywhere,
during all the year, and all over the world, for all kind of audiences, for all generations, an audience frequently
more numerous than 10 000 people per show.

The show Dragonüs invites you in a medieval and futuristic world
where the tyranny appeared under the mythical personification of an
iron dragon thirsty with power. Spreading the terror in the heart of the
village, he maintains inhabitants under his yoke.
But it would be without taking into account brave knights, who are
going to walk around in your streets, ready to defend body and soul
innocent people.
Rush into the incredible universe and come out again fortified by this
battle for the liberty of consciousness.
On a original and live music, Malabar’s stilt walkers will show you their
best acrobatic prowesses.
The iron and light dragon is a monumental construction in progress.
Widely present in European myths, he symbolizes the richness of dictators eaten away by greed, cupidity and authoritarianism. They are
the guardians of a treasure filled with gold and obtained by blood and
violence.
Thank to its makers’ staff and their fertile imagination, Malabar learnt
how to give birth to this dragon, symbol of a post-apocalyptic period
in the grip of the most tyrannical persons.
Perched on their suspension stilts, the four knights will fight against
the dragon until its last breath to save the local population enslaved.
They embody the idea of cooperation and exchanges between Europeans cultures thank to their innate/natural sense of justice and honor.

A Lunar boat is drifting in the street of your town. Its mysterious crew explores
this new land. Wherever its eye comes to rest on the city livens up and transforms itself. Bathing in an atmosphere of dreams, humour and poetry, the
Aquarêves vessel transports crew and spectators, drifting along in a current of
fantastic parties.
The parade
The Parade is a sequence of phantasmagoric scenes flowing around
the majestic movement of the Aquarêves ship, 16 meters long. The
whole urban landscape becomes a theater in which numerous astonished surprises are conjured up by a company of sprung-stilt walkers,
acrobats, pyrotechnicians and musicians.
Le show
juggling
The Aquarêves ship comes to anchor in the stage area. The finale is a
succession of pictures combining choreographed stilt walkers, stunts,
acrobatics, juggling, aerial acts, pyrotechnics… weaving a fabric of
dreamlike images. At the end, the playground is filled with foam and
the audience is invited to party and perform the last act with us…

The Sunset: The dawn of the first day is worn by the stilt walkers,
worshippers of the sun.

The Zenith: The builders of the sun complete the construction of the
sun: juggling, manipulations of the Chinese sticks then big shelves.
Then the guards play and jump into its sunshine with a precision and
a surprising suppleness (jumping rope on stilts).
The Sunrise: At the dawn of the first night the creation, the stiltwalkers
manipulate the light, in a torrent of fire (choreographed pyrotechnics)

The parade

An acrobat, distracted, has let his phantasmagorical creatures escape.
One of them is nesting in a tree, another is hiding in a doorway, a
third tries to dissimulate itself in a telephone booth whilst the other
takes refuge with a not too reassured shopkeeper one has demanded
political asylum and refuses to leave the police station in which it had
looked for sanctuary. As for more rapid ones, they have disappeared
into the surroundings.

The show « the mostra »
parade
The show is based on the traditional Mostra and interpreted in modern
way. The tamer must now bring out the personality of each creature of
the bestiary. By the end of the show they will have succeeded, together,
in presenting a fabulous choreography, mixing the styles, passing from
acrobatic tango to can-can and finishing with a pyro-symphonic cloudswing number.

Four actresses with sturdy character, perched on their certainty, wearing the
costumes of the epoch, accompanied by their servant-musician, cry out and
loud their thoughts about love and freedom.
Their are from the high these Marquizes ! Oh yes thez are freed!
Certainly, they measure us and in spite of their corsets, their elegant
dresses and their wigs, nothing can retain them.
The public accompanies this four Marquizes in their route which leads
them to the bal of King on July 13th, 1789. Who will succeed in obtaining the favours of His Majesty and in becoming her favourite?
Four sisters, with the very singular character, are not completely ready
for this memorable evening. They sharp their charm and rehearse
their dances and singings of seduction…

the show. Contemporaries’ texts and songs add an absurd dimension

Helidra is a unique collaboration project between four street theatre companies in Greece, Poland, France and Bulgaria who work all
of them in the public space. The collaboration promotes experimentation of forms and innovative genres through the street theatre
medium. Indeed, it is a particular type of performance in the public
space which is revealed in the urban life and creates an opportunity
for the local population to gather themselves to play, to share and to
learn. By bringing the theatre in the streets, the public is invited to
reinterpret his environment, the urban landscape and the local heritage through a spectacular visual performance.

Research: a common European heritage
The project builds his theme on the common European literary tradition of the heroes-guardians of the frontiers of Europe and exploits
the research made for the European project Acrinet. Stories resulting
from this research describe memorable examples of cooperation and
exchange between cultures and they underline the role of symbolic
heroes during time of peace. Those traditions carry a social and precious message for the Europe of today: the vitality of a dynamic comprehension and an effective construction of the peace. The “building
of bridges” and the peaceful coexistence conveyed by Acrites legends
and poems have a special signification for our European society of
the XXIst century, multicultural society with several ethnic groups and
several confessions.
Those researches are made to create the scenario and the libretto of
the show Dragon.
A collaboration project
Helidra has been created by a consortium of four street theatre companies and one independent consultancy specialized in local development, production of performances for the public space and also in the
cultural research and organization of events.

The performance
Dragon adopts a rock-opera form and is addressed to a diverse public,
reflecting the experimental nature of the project. It represents a spectacular performance combining dance, music live, singings, acrobatics,
optical illusions, videos projections and pyrotechnics, the all creating a
mythical landscape to captivate the public. The rock-opera is presented in the Vrahon festival, in Athens, the 19th, 20th and 21st September 2013, and will be, by consequence, in tour in Europe creating the
opportunity for actors, musicians, technicians and the rest of the staff
to collaborate together and play in others countries.

Some events are foreseen for the public before and during performances. At the time of the preparation of the premiere, a series of
interactive, playful and educative games will be organized to inspire
and provoke the interest of the public around the show, to invite him
to experiment and explore their urban environment in Athens streets,
through new technologies.
Workshops
Artists are invited to take part in international workshops in Sommières (March 2013), Athens (September 2013), Poznan (March 2014)
and Sofia (September 2014). Workshops, lead by professionals working in street arts field, will talk about each aspect of public space
shows, encouraging artists to explore new techniques, new artistic
forms, script writing and others skills as acrobatics, movement and
different styles of animation.

In 2001, an former station of merchandise was renewed and transformed into a artistic residency : this is le Quai des Arts in Sommieres,
close to the cities of Montpellier and Nimes, in south France.
After being dedicated to permanent residencies, Le Quai des Arts
evolved to be at the disposal of artists of all kind.
