Online Faith Formation Courses
Registration is now open for the next cycle of online faith formation courses offered by Newman Theological
College through the Benedict XVI Institute for New Evangelization.
Courses beginning February 15 include: Jesus, The Sacraments, Catechesis, Moral Theology, The Practice of
Youth Ministry, The Practice of Social Justice, Liturgical Practices, and Acts & New Testament Writings.
All are offered online, so you can study from the comfort of home and work around your personal schedule.
Each course runs five weeks and costs just $70. Take an individual course for interest, or work toward one or

Dear Pastors, Lay Pastoral Animators and Parishioners,
Graham Hill, C.Ss.R., Pastoral Intern
We welcome Graham Hill to the Archdiocese. Graham is a Redemptorist seminarian of the
Edmonton-Toronto Province. Having completed his theological studies at Boston College in the United
States, he has been assigned for a pastoral internship experience to St. Joseph Parish in Grande Prairie.
Originally from England, Graham comes with a broad experience. Graham got to meet many of our clergy
at the January Presbyterium meeting. He will be with us at least until the summer.
Change of Date for Faith Rally
I ask you to take note of the following change in the date of the annual Faith Rally that takes place in
Grouard. This year and in all subsequent years, this will take place on the weekend prior to the Labour Day
weekend. Therefore, this year it will be the 28-30 August 2015, rather than the 21-23 August.
Archdiocesan Youth Ministry Coordinator
I regret to inform you that after about two years as the youth ministry coordinator for the Archdiocese,
Denis Blanchette has tendered his resignation from this position. He has expressed to me his gratitude for
the acceptance and cooperation that he has experienced over these years. However, he feels that the time has
come for personal reasons to move on in his life. He will cooperate in the search for his successor, and he
hopes still to assist in some youth programs in the diocese as time allows him. I am deeply grateful to Denis
for his ministry among us, and pray that he is as well appreciated in his next ventures.
You will notice that an ad has been placed throughout the Archdiocese and in western Catholic papers
for his replacement as Archdiocesan Youth Ministry Coordinator.
Director of Stewardship
You may also notice that we have begun to advertise for a Director of Stewardship in the Archdiocese.
The very notion of “Stewardship” is growing and developing in the Catholic Church as a spiritual way of
viewing and dealing with our time, talent and treasure. It is my hope that we will find a suitable candidate
before the next stewardship conference taking place this June in Calgary. This person will also continue to
promote our Second Mile Giving Initiative, which was left without a director when Father Joseph Jacobson
retired in June of last year. Please help make this position known among likely candidates you know.
Year of Consecrated Life: The Sisters of Providence
In each monthly letter until the end of the Year of Consecrated Life in February 2016, I will highlight a
Congregation of women or men with roots and ministry in our Archdiocese. I begin with the Sisters of
Providence.

The Sisters of Providence is an international congregation, founded in Montreal by Blessed Emilie
Tavernier Gamelin in 1843. Today there are more than 700 Sisters and over 1000 Providence Associates who
serve people in Canada, the United States, El Salvador, Haiti, Chile, Argentina, the Philippines, Egypt, and
Cameroon. While each culture is unique and the needs vary, the Sisters of Providence in these many nations are
united by their profound faith, total confidence in Providence and compassion for those they serve.
The Sisters of Providence first came to western Canada in 1886 and established St. Mary’s Hospital in
New Westminster, British Columbia. From there, they were called to serve at many other locations in BC,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon, caring for children, the sick, and the elderly.
Holy Angels Province is the name of the western Canadian region of the Sisters of Providence of
Montreal. Formed on August 8, 1912, the headquarters for Holy Angels Province was first located at St.
Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The provincialate was moved to St. Eugene Hospital, Cranbrook, BC in
1914, to Lacombe Home in Midnapore, AB in 1920, and to its present location at Providence Centre in
Edmonton, AB in 1965. Today, the Sisters in western Canada provide for the needs of the marginalized and
vulnerable by working together with existing social, education and health care organizations.
The Sisters served mostly in rural areas, where it was very difficult to get qualified help in their work.
Besides carrying heavy workloads, the Sisters had very little to work with. Their early letters home were
“begging letters” asking for medicine and clothing for their boarders and patients and for other people who
came for help. They asked for school supplies, toys and musical instruments for their pupils, and asked for
basic supplies like oil for lamps and cloth to make clothing for the needy. And when the barges came with
crates of donations, the Sisters and the children would gather round to gasp and wonder and sometimes weep
with joy at the things they received. The Sisters also organized annual begging trips in order to get money to
maintain the institutions they operated for the care of the aged, the homeless and the sick.
The first Sisters of Providence in the West were French Canadian. They were quickly joined by
young women from the West, of many ethnic backgrounds and speaking a variety of languages. They had
some very important things in common: a spirit of adventure, a trust in Providence, a desire to help others,
and the call to let other things go to follow Jesus.
It was during World War II that the social safety net which is now part of our national identity really
took shape. Today Canadians take it for granted that it is a public responsibility to provide help for our
citizens’ most basic needs. Between 1950 and the 1980′s most of the Providence institutions and works were
taken on by the public through government at one level or another. The Sisters of Providence now look to
new horizons such as palliative care, pastoral care, and ways to combat family violence. Like Mother Emilie
Gamelin, they keep trying to see with a larger vision and to dare with a larger heart. (Information taken from

In the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan, the Sisters of Providence began and operated several
hospitals which are still serving the public (though not under the Sisters’ care), such as St. Theresa’s Hospital
in Fort Vermilion, Sacred Heart Health Centre in McLennan and St. Martin Health Centre in Wabasca. They
also taught in several schools.
Presently, there are two Sisters of Providence living and serving in the Archdiocese: Sisters Dolores
Blanchette and Rita Schiller, in McLennan.

Chers pasteurs, animateurs (-trices) de pastorale, paroissiens et paroissiennes,

Nous accueillons Graham Hill à notre archidiocèse. Graham est un séminariste rédemptoriste de la
Province d'Edmonton-Toronto. Après avoir terminé ses études de théologie à Boston College aux ÉtatsUnis, il a été assigné à la paroisse Saint-Joseph de Grande Prairie pour une expérience de stage pastoral.
Originaire d'Angleterre, Graham nous arrive avec une expérience diversifiée. En janvier à la réunion du
presbyterium Graham a rencontré plusieurs membres du clergé. Il sera avec nous au moins jusqu'à l'été.
Changement de date pour la Rallye de Foi
Notez le changement suivant au sujet de la date du Rallye de la Foi qui a lieu annuellement à
Grouard. Dorénavant ce rassemblement aura lieu la fin de semaine précédent la fin de semaine de la fête
du Travail. Par conséquent, cette année ce sera du 28 au 30 août 2015, plutôt que les 21-23 août.
Coordinnateur du Ministère de la Jeunesse Archidiocésain
Je regrette de vous informer que, après environ deux ans comme coordinateur de la pastorale des
jeunes de l'archidiocèse, Denis Blanchette a remis sa démission de ce poste. Il m'a exprimé sa gratitude
pour l'accueil et la coopération qu'il a connu au cours de ces années. Toutefois, il estime que le temps est
venu de poursuivre sa vie personnelle. Il collaborera à la recherche de son successeur, et si le temps lui
permet il espère d’encore assister certains programmes diocésains pour les jeunes. Je suis profondément
reconnaissant à Denis pour son ministère parmi nous, et je prie qu'il est aussi bien apprécié dans ses
futures entreprises.
Vous remarquerez que l'annonce pour un remplacement de coordonnateur (-trice) de pastorale aux
jeunes dans l'Archidiocèse a été placée dans les feuillets paroissiales de l'archidiocèse et dans les journaux
catholiques de l’ouest canadien.
Directeur (-trice) de « Stewardship »
Vous remarquerez également que nous avons commencé à faire de la publicité pour un directeur (trice) de « stewardship » dans l'archidiocèse. La notion même de «stewardship » approfondit et se
développe dans l'Église catholique comme un moyen spirituel de percevoir et de traiter notre temps, talent
et trésor. J’espère que nous allons trouver un candidat approprié avant la prochaine conférence de
stewardship qui se aura lieu au mois de juin à Calgary. Cette personne aura également à continuer de
promouvoir notre « Second Mile Giving Initiative », qui a été laissé sans directeur lorsque le Père Joseph
Jacobson s’est retraité en juin dernier. Annoncez la nouvelle de ce poste aux candidats probables que vous
connaissez.
Année de la Vie Consacrée: Les Sœurs de la Providence

archidiocèse. Je commence avec les Sœurs de la Providence.

Les Sœurs de la Providence, une congrégation internationale, a été fondée à Montréal par la
bienheureuse Émilie Tavernier Gamelin en 1843. Aujourd'hui, il y a plus de 700 sœurs et plus de 1000
Associées de Providence qui servent au Canada, aux États-Unis, El Salvador, Haïti, le Chili, l'Argentine, les
Philippines, l'Egypte, et au Cameroun. Bien que chaque culture est unique et les besoins varient, les Sœurs
de la Providence dans ces nombreux pays sont unies par leur foi profonde, une confiance totale en la
Providence et de la compassion pour ceux qu'elles servent.
En premier les Sœurs de la Providence sont venues dans l'Ouest canadien en 1886 et ont établi
l'hôpital St. Mary à New Westminster en Colombie-Britannique. De là, elles ont été appelées à servir dans
de nombreux autres endroits en C.-B., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba et au Yukon, dans les soins
auprès des enfants, des malades et des personnes âgées.
La Province Holy Angels, nom de la région de l'Ouest canadien des Sœurs de la Providence de
Montréal, formée le 8 août 1912, a d'abord siégé à l'Hôpital St. Paul à Vancouver, C.-B. Le provincialat a
été déplacé à l'hôpital Saint-Eugène à Cranbrook, C.-B. en 1914, au Foyer Lacombe à Midnapore, AB en
1920, et à son emplacement actuel au Centre Providence à Edmonton, AB en 1965. Aujourd'hui, les Sœurs
de l'Ouest canadien prévoit les besoins des personnes marginalisées et vulnérables en travaillant ensemble
avec les organisations sociales, d'éducation et de soins de santé existants.
Les Sœurs ont servi principalement dans les régions rurales, où il était très difficile d'obtenir de
l'aide qualifié dans leur travail. Outre les défis pénibles de travail, les sœurs avaient très peu de ressources
en main. Durant les premières années leurs lettres à leur famille ont été des lettres "de mendicité",
demandant des médicaments et des vêtements pour leurs pensionnaires et patients et pour d'autres
personnes qui recherchaient de l'aide. Elles ont demandé des fournitures scolaires, jouets et instruments de
musique pour leurs élèves, et ont demandé des fournitures de base comme de l'huile pour les lampes et du
tissu pour fabriquer des vêtements pour les nécessiteux. Et lorsque les barges arrivaient avec des caisses
de dons, les sœurs et les enfants se rassemblaient tous étaient émerveillés et parfois ils pleuraient de joie
pour les choses reçues. Les Sœurs ont également organisé des voyages annuels de mendicité pour obtenir
de l'argent pour maintenir les institutions qu’elles opéraient pour le soin des personnes âgées, les sans-abri
et les malades.
Les premières Sœurs de la Providence de l'Ouest étaient des Canadiennes françaises. EIles ont
été rapidement rejointes par de jeunes femmes de l'Ouest, venant de nombreuses origines ethniques et
parlant une variété de langues. Elles partageaient des traits communs très importants soit un esprit
d'aventure, une confiance en la Providence, un désir d'aider les autres et un appel à tout laisser pour suivre
Jésus.
Durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale le filet de sécurité sociale qui fait maintenant partie de notre
identité nationale s’est formé. Aujourd'hui, les Canadiens tiennent pour acquis que c’est une responsabilité
publique de fournir l’aide aux besoins les plus fondamentaux de nos citoyens. Entre 1950 et les années
1980, le public par le biais du gouvernement à un niveau ou un autre a pris la gouvernance de la plupart
des institutions et des œuvres des Sœurs de la Providence. Les Sœurs s’orientent maintenant vers de
nouveaux horizons tels que les soins palliatifs, la pastorale, et les moyens de lutter contre la violence
familiale. Comme Mère Émilie Gamelin, elles continuent à essayer de voir l’avenir avec une vision plus

Dans l'archidiocèse de Grouard-McLennan, les Sœurs de la Providence ont commencé et dirigé
plusieurs hôpitaux qui sont encore au service du public (mais pas sous la gérance des Sœurs), tels que
l'Hôpital St. Theresa à Fort Vermilion, Centre de santé Sacré-Cœur à McLennan et Centre de santé SaintMartin à Wabasca. Celles-ci ont également enseigné dans plusieurs écoles.
Nous avons toujours deux Sœurs de la Providence qui vivent et font du ministère dans
