That’s unfortunate because it is to me among the most reliable house in the market today. Its Brut Audoin de Dampierre, Champagne Brut Millésimé 1996 « Family Reserve............ $146.00 This is one of my all time favorites. Not only the finest of his wines (at least to me) but it also comes in a fantastic package. The Cork is held by a thread tied the very old fashion way. It is the only Champagne house to still do that on their top Cuvée. The wine reflect perfectly the greatness of the vintage. A delicate balance between the discreet effervescence and the subtil flavors. WHITE WINES ________________________________________________ Domaine Weinbach, Alsace Sylvaner 2003.............................................................. $35.00 The sylvaner variety makes a tremendous summer wine. This wine comes from one of the best Alsacian producer and it shows. A mix of white fruit (peach and nectarine) it will accompany perfectly any fish but will truly show its character with our mussels Domaine Phillipe Girard, Savigny-Lès-Beaune 2001 .............................................. $35.00 This wine is a perfect example of what the “lesser” appellations of white burgundy are capable of. A crisp, clean wine with some exotic fruit and white fruits as well ( I thinking nectarine here) with a touch of sweet lemon aromas. And at that price, I do believe it is worth a try Domaine Pierre Vessigaud, Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes 2004................................. $62.00 The greatest thing about wines is when you think you know the best producer in a region, there is always someone to remind you that you really don’t know anything….When I first saw this wine I figured it was another one of those “over priced and over-worked Pouilly-Fuissé about to end up over there in the sink” wine. And then I tasted it. The nose is a fairly straightforward balance of citrus fruits and green apple but the palate is an ongoing war of flavors where the traditional white fruit slowly give way to a more sustain but delicate passion fruit all of it surrounded by a vanilla suggesting some malolactic fermentation and oak barrel ageing. Let’s face it , I need a swift kick in the …more than I need another white burgundy, but I have virtually no will power when I come across wines like this one. RED WINES __________________________________________________ Abbaye de Tholomiès, Minervois 2004 .................................................................... $32.00 I have been saying for a while that the wines from the Languedoc are slowly but surely coming out of the shadow of the great Bordeaux or Rhônes and I am always ecstatic when I can prove it (call it ego if you wish). This particular wine hass a deep, dark purple color, a profound nose of dark fruits (think super ripe blacberries) with a touch of toasted bread, revealing powerful flavors of red berries, vanilla, wood and tar and soft tannins on the palate. At this price it is more than a steal… Domaine François Parent, Pommard 1er Cru “les Arvelets” 2000 ......................... $104.00 A fabulous wine showing red berries ( cherry in particular), toasted bread and liquorice: An immense wine. They only make about 160 cases of this wine and they of course sell it at a very unreasonable price (why wouldn’t they after all?). We manage however to get a few cases of this wine at a considerable discount so you should not pass this up. When selecting these wines, I carefully consider the price/quality ratio although – I admit —I sometimes have to mention it no matter what price it may be. -2- Demi Bouteilles Half Bottles « Je cuisine avec du vin. Il m’arrive parfois même de l’incorporer à mes plats » « I cook with wine. Although most people believe Alsacian wines are sweet, the fact of the matter is that they are usually dry. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains are known as the Noble Grape varieties and are the most common. Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Noir and Chasselas (the german Gutedel) are among the secondary grapes. The wines are among the best of France varying in depth, intensity and flavors depending on the grapes. Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner are clean and Crisp with citrus fruits accents, the Riesling are known for their petrol and white fruit savors, Gewürztraminers are closer to exotic fruits and especially Leechees and Pinot Gris are intense in white flowers like acacia. The king grapes there are Savagnin, Altesse and Chardonnay. The wines show tremendous depth and aromas of green to slightly toasted walnuts and hazelnuts. Jura & Arbois Rhône whites are amongst my favorites. They have strength with nuts and honey flavors and have a very long finish. Except a few that age well they should be drunk young. Rivesaltes and Banyuls are both from the Languedoc Roussillon near the Spanish border. The grapes used are mainly Grenache white and red except for the Muscats. They are in essence France’s answer to Ports: Powerful and of very long ageing with aromas of toasted walnuts and almonds. They are some of the best dessert wines produced in France.
