Fr8 Module 1 Lesson 3
Fr 8 Module 1 Lesson 3
3.1 In this lesson I’ll be talking about where we live. I’ll be using depuis with present tense verbs.
Starter: Read again this text about Bart which we saw at the end of Lesson 1.
What information do we find out about where Bart lives?
Moi et ma famille!
Salut!
Now read the following paragraph giving you some more details. Can you work out what Bart is telling
you? Use the vocab on p22-23 to help you.
Ma ville!
Salut! Je m’appelle Bart Simpson et je suis américain! Je viens de Summerville, une petite ville dans l’ouest.
Mais maintenant j’habite à Shelbyville, une grande ville dans le nord. J’habite ici depuis 9 ans. C’est fantastique –
j’aime Shelbyville parce qu’il y a beaucoup à faire ici.
Où?.......
dans le nord
dans l’ouest
dans l’est
dans le sud
Depuis…. – for/since….
We use depuis (+time phrase) in French to mean for….. /since……
Eg: Bart: J’habite ici depuis 9 ans. – I’ve been living here for 9 years.
CHALLENGE: Look again at these two sentences and compare the verbs in the French and the English.
What do you notice?
In French we use depuis with a present tense verb: J’habite ici depuis 9 ans.
In English we use for/since with a past tense verb: – I’ve been living here for 9 years.
p10, Ecouter 1
Now listen to these people describing where they live, and read the text boxes. Have you picked up all the
details?
p10, Lire 2
Now read the paragraphs again and complete the table!
p10, Parler 3
Re-read the information above on the use of depuis.
Now translate the three questions here into French, using the example to help you. Then give your answers.
Make sure you have formed the verbs correctly!
Feuille 1.8
Now complete the worksheet!
3.2 In this lesson I’ll be using the irregular verb venir. I’ll be checking which word to use for in.
Re-read Bart’s second paragraph above and look at the compass points.
p11, Parler 4
Now take on the identity of each person represented on these green stickers and, for each person, present
yourself and the details about where you live.
p11, Ecouter 5
Listen to the audio and read the text. How much do you understand? Remember to use the dictionary pages at
the back of your textbook for any words you are not sure about.
p11, Lire 6
Read the text again, then complete the sentences.
CHALLENGE: Look again at the paragraphs in Ecouter 5. How many parts of the verb venir do you
think you can spot? What do you notice about them?
REMEMBER: An irregular verb does not follow the usual pattern. You need to learn it! Practise by
chanting it through until you know it!
Here it is:
venir – to come (+de…= from…)
je viens – I come
tu viens – you come
il vient – he/it comes
elle vient – she/it comes
on vient - one comes/people come
nous venons – we come
vous venez – you (pl) come
ils viennent – they come
elles viennent – they (nf) come
CHALLENGE: Look again at the paragraphs in Ecouter 5:
What are the words used here for in? How do we know which one to use each time? Can you work out
the rule?
Is there any other word for in in French? (eg How do you say ‘in England’? How about ‘in the USA’?)
Saying ‘in’ in French! Here’s the rule:
à for a town, en/au/aux for a country , dans for the North or the South
nf/nm/npl
à for a town, en/au/aux for a country , dans for a house or a flat
nf/nm/npl
Worksheet: Saying in!
Complete the worksheet, checking your rules carefully!
