Administrative Report K E A N U N I V E R S I T Y A Record of Policy and Information on Events Published by Univer sity Relations Ioviero Named ABCA/Rawlings National Coach of the Year On the heels of delivering Kean University its first-ever national baseball championship, head coach Neil Ioviero was named the NCAA Division III Baseball Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Rawlings, who sponsors the award. Ioviero, whose team captured the Division III National Baseball Championship with a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Emory University on May 29 in Grand Chute, Wis., had previously been named the Coach of the Year by the New Jersey Athletic Conference, by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association for Divisions II and III, and of the ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic Region, one of eight geographic regions designated by the NCAA. Kean competed in the Division III World Series as the champion of the Mid-Atlantic Region after defeating Johns Hopkins University on May 19. In 10 seasons at Kean, Ioviero has led the Cougars to a remarkable .689 winning percentage, an average of 28 victories per season. The two-time NJAC Coach of the Year became the program’s all-time winningest field general in 2003, and has since more than doubled his career victory total, winning 281 of the 408 games he has coached at Kean. Under Ioviero’s tutelage, the Cougars have advanced to NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional four times and in 2002, captured the program’s first-ever NJAC Championship. The American Baseball Coaches Association was formed in New York City in 1945 by a group of 27 col- lege baseball coaches in order to formulate ideas for the promotion and improvement of the collegiate game. Today, the ABCA is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its 6,200-plus members represent all 50 states and 22 countries. Since 1945, association membership has broadened to include seven divisions - NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, Junior College, High School and Youth. The ABCA is headquartered in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Administrative Report Summer Deadline The deadline for the Administrative Report is Thursday at noon for publication one week from the following Monday. Please e-mail your information to [email protected]. Rausch Has Articles Published Erwin Rausch, adjunct in the Department of Management, has recently published two articles which represent another step in a continuing effort to present increasingly progressive reader- and learner-friendly versions of management- and leadership-decision guidelines. The first, titled The Critical Need for Coverage of Quality Decisions Making in Professional and Management Education, appears in The Journal of Enterprise Management, Volume 20, No. Erwin Rausch 2007. These latest guidelines emerged from a concept that was published originally in Balancing Needs of People and Organizations by the Bureau of National Affairs (Rausch, 1978) and later in High Quality Leadership Practical Guidelines to Becoming a More Effective Manager (Rausch and Washbush, 1998). Since the original publication, the subject has been the discussion in many journal articles and of presentations at academic and practitioner conferences, as well as in management development programs. Most recently, Rausch’s Leadership in Management Education and Development: Criteria for Quality Decisions has appeared in the European Business Review, Vol. 19, No. 3, 2007. It shows how a focus on decisions can enhance management education and especially those aspects that pertain to their impact on stakeholders. Each reading is followed by discussions with the author, during which time the audience is invited to listen and contribute. Selected from a pool of more than 700 student-teachers who graduated in the 2006-2007 academic year, each of these honorees exemplified the programs’ focus on pedagogical skills that complement a strong knowledge of subject matter. A host of Kean faculty members and students, as well as awardees’ cooperating teachers, clinical instructors and supportive families gathered to recognize their wonderful achievements. “This is one of the College of Education’s most wonderful events each year because it allows us to honor the students who have worked so hard in their respective field,” said Melissa Tomich, coordinator of the event who was on hand to oversee the success of the day’s celebration. After a welcome address by Dr. Vinton Thompson, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, the students were presented with their awards by Dr. Frank J. Esposito, interim dean of the College of Education. “Being recognized as an Outstanding Professional Intern is a tremendous honor,” said Allison Roedell, a recipi- ent from Whitsett, N.C., originally from Rahway, N.J. “I am grateful for the priceless educational experiences I received at Kean University. I intend to utilize all I have learned from my professors, cooperating teachers, supervisors, administrators, classmates and students to enrich the life of each and every one of my students.” In addition to recognizing these future educators, Dr. Martha M. Mobley, director of the Teaching Performance Center, presented the Richard J. Nichols award to Karen Moffatt, vice principal at the James J. Flynn Elementary School in Perth Amboy, N.J. Moffatt, who has two master’s degrees from Kean, was honored for her outstanding service to the University via her personal and professional determination to maintain a partnership between Kean University and the Perth Amboy Professional Development School. The award has been given out annually since 1994 to a representative of a school district, teacher or administrator, a Board of Education member, community advocate and someone who is not a full-time University employee. 3 While the festive mood was felt by all in attendance, a group of six New Jersey high-school students were certainly “lovin’ it” when each were presented with a Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources (RMHC/HACER) scholarship in recognition of his or her academic achievements during Kean’s Future Teachers Academy, Spanish Speaking Program or Project Adelante, respectively. HACER scholarship recipients Antonio A. Burga, Diana P. Calle and Stacey D. Rua from Elizabeth High School, Wendy M. Jimenez from Perth Amboy High School, Angie S. Restrepo from Rahway High School and Rebecca M. Rosado from Somerville High School, will pursue an education degree at Kean beginning in fall 2007. The six scholarships, totaling $10,000 this year, were secured through the tenacity and dedicated work of Dr. Gilda Del Risco, assistant professor in the Department of Elementary, Middle and Secondary Education. see Outstanding Professional Interns on page 4 Department of Counselor Education’s Center for Excellence Receives NJDOE Grant The Department of Counselor Education’s Center for Excellence was awarded a $75,000 competitive grant by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), Office of Educational Support Services. This grant will assist the NJDOE in implementing a statewide program evaluation. Under the direction of Dr. Barry Mascari, assistant professor in the department, the project will evaluate the degree, quality and effects of the implementation of the regulations at N.J.A.C. 6A:16-8, Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) and the NJDOE’s best practices for the I&RS regulations in public schools. Mascari will be assisted by Dr. Juneau Gary, chair of the department, and Dr. Ron McLean, associate professor, as well as temporary project staff. New Jersey’s I&RS program is an innovative approach addressing struggling students in General Education, and New Jersey is among a few states using this model. Its effective and coordinated system incorporates a multidisciplinary team approach for the planning and delivery of intervention and referral services to assist students who experience learning, behavior or health difficulties. The I&RS program also assists educators and educational specialists who experience difficulties in addressing students’ learning, behavior or health needs. Mascari’s team will conduct a program evaluation to compare results between those schools that participated in the I&RS training program and those that did not participate, as well implementationfidelity issues. Gary Vermeire, NJDOE, noted in his letter to the University that Kean’s application received the review panel’s highest score of all applicants. The project runs between June 2007 and February 2008.
