S R Y C Sassafras River Yacht Club Nauti News S R Y C April 2011 DEAD AHEAD! April 23 – Chili Dinner - SHM Activ. Ctr. April 30 – Shakedown Cruise – Cruising Season Begins! May 21 – SRYC Opening Day - Skipjack Cove / SHM Activ. Ctr. Commodore’s Notes THREE, TWO, ONE, SPLASHDOWN! If your boat is not already launched, it should be soon. Winter is finally behind us and the Spring weather is getting better, so that means it’s boating time again. Leslie and I look forward to this time of year much more than the fall when boating season comes to an end. Hopefully, the fuel prices will not put too much of a kink in your plans for boating this season, because Fleet Captain Joe Lynch has some great cruises planned this year. Our compliments to Rear Commodore Terry See (and Brenda of course!) for a great Snowflake Luncheon. We are now looking forward to our annual Chili dinner. Be sure to stop by the Ship’s Store at all land events to purchase what Vice Commodore Glenn Davis has available. Please take note of the special section in this newsletter requesting your help. Our Club needs your help in order to hold several special events.. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for the Club, please feel free to reach out to any of the Board of Governors. Commodore Craig Solt Wanna Help? The Club needs a few members to organize and help with a few activities and committees for the 2011 season: • We need a person to form and lead a membership committee to help spread the word about the Club in the local marina area. • We would like to repeat last year’s successful Marina Mixers at Skipjack, Duffy Creek, and Sassafras Harbor marinas. Those events helped recruit several new SRYC members. The Board has alloted funds for incidental supplies, so no personal expense is required. We have a lead for Sassafras Harbor Marina and are working on a lead for Skipjack. We still need a lead for Duffy Creek along with helpers for all three. • We would also like to have a fun, safe charity event of some type to replace the dinghy poker run, along with people to run the event. Have a good idea? Let’s hear it. Without your support, these activities will not be held. See Craig, Glenn, Terry, or Joe at the Chili Dinner, or send them an email if you’d like to help out. We will also have sign-up sheets available at the dinner. SRYC Board SRYC Nauti News Vice Commodore’s Notes I would like to take this opportunity to express the appreciation of the Ship’s Store by thanking all those who made purchases at our Snowflake Luncheon this year. The items have arrived for those members who placed orders at the luncheon. Those orders that have not been delivered or picked up from me already, will be available at the Chili Dinner. If you are unable to attend Chili Dinner, and have not received your order, please contact me so we can arrange to have the items shipped to you at a nominal fee. The Ship’s Store will be open for business at the Sassafras Harbor Marina Activities Center during the Chili Dinner. The store has been restocked with those items that were purchased at the Snowflake Luncheon, so please come with the thought of “dress to impress” in your new SRYC attire. Please remember that the Ship’s Store is not equipped to accept credit or debit cards, so please be prepared to handle all of your Ship’s Store transactions in cash. We are in the process of updating the SRYC Ship’s Store website. Go to www.sasryc.org and click on the Ship’s Store link. Check for updates in the near future and contact me if there may be an item that you would like to purchase. Please note that the Ship’s Store on the website is for information only, orders cannot be placed on-line. However, items may be purchased at anytime, not just during Club events, by contacting me directly by email or phone. We look forward to seeing you on the water and about the Chesapeake Bay area this season all “decked out” in your new SRYC attire. Let’s show the pride that we have for the Sassafras River Yacht Club as we are out and about this 2011 boating season. V/C Glenn L. Davis April 2011 Rear Commodore’s Notes Spring is bound to happen sooner or later; I keep thinking the weather will start to warm up. Anyhow, we had a really good time at the Snowflake Luncheon. I hope all of you that came enjoyed it as much as I did. What a great turnout we had! Chili Dinner is right around the corner. I am looking forward to getting together with everyone again. I want to say thanks to all of you who lent a hand at the Snowflake Luncheon. We couldn’t have these functions without the help of all the volunteers. Speaking of volunteers, I want to remind everyone that the sign-up sheets will be at the Chili dinner waiting to be filled. Opening Day is just around the corner. We will need your donations for the Basket of Cheer. For those of you coming to the Chili Dinner, please bring them with you. For those unable to attend, you can drop off your donation at my boat, See Crews, at Sassafras Harbor slip D-7, or at Margaret and Bob Clements’ boat, Kentucky Lady III, at Sassafras Harbor slip E-20. Now that we have the official definition, are you ready to weigh anchor and get underway into SPRING? We are just a few weeks from our shakedown cruise to the Chesapeake Inn & Marina. The boat yards have been buzzing with maintenance activities and boats are quickly taking up residence in slips for the season. I am looking forward to our first cruise and traveling with you through our exciting schedule. The sign-up for cruises this season has been solid with 60% of available slips being booked. The majority of trips are well over 50% in reservations. If you have not booked your cruises, we still have room. If you are interested in any cruise, please let me know as soon as possible; I am making the final confirmations to the marinas. For members who have sent your cruise selections, I will be sending out your confirmations shortly. You can expect to be notified 30 days prior to each cruise that final payment is due. I would like to again thank my cruise team for the outstanding job putting this season’s destination schedule together. Helena and I appreciate all the time and effort you have put into getting this done for the Club. Safe seas, Joe Lynch Classy Boat Names April 2010 Membership renewals are well underway and the Club has had a great response. Just a reminder to those members who have not renewed yet, the deadline is May 1st, after that time your name will be removed from the roster. These courtesies may range from simply being allowed to enter their facilities, to discounts on slip rentals. SRYC Officers have CBYCA roster books which have information on member yacht clubs in the Chesapeake Bay area. Contact a SRYC officer for more information. Note: If you have not renewed your SRYC Club membership for 2011, you will no longer receive the Nauti News. If you are a new member, it is a great way for other members to recognize you. And if you have upgraded, why not show off your new ‘Pride n’ Joy.’ (Maura and I will be updating our picture very soon.) Watch out Linwood, another party boat is coming to E-Dock. Rumor has it, there will be a camper on the swim platform of Toddie Time, in the hopes of keeping the wine glass with lifetime refills topped off. Hope you have a lot of wine, Donna. Just so everyone knows, E Dock at Sassafras Harbor is the designated party dock for 2011. And then, who can forget the sarong? It looked so good on you John, please bring it on Summer Cruise. Glen and Connie introduced several new items in the Ship’s Store this year, with a fleece jacket popular enough to cause people to hide it from each other. Daryl and Jacqui have changed roles for 2011. Jacqui will be the Ship’s Store’s best and most frequent customer. Daryl will have to be satisfied with the red button. It’s time for Craig and Leslie to go out and get a new car. Perhaps a sporty little two seater; no need for storage space anymore. This season, you can show up at club events without a carload of club stuff. Pat Amato was last seen on the casino floor muttering something like, “Daddy needs a new chart plotter.” Wonder how that worked out? Win or lose, I hope it was fun. See you all at the Chili Dinner, Sassy ➺ It was great to see all the smiling faces at the Snowflake Luncheon, especially John Boyer’s. Haven’t seen his face in a while. Some members have never seen it. The afternoon began with an invocation by Ernie Inmon, including a special request for reasonable fuel prices. We all hope that request will be granted. Terry and Brenda did an excellent job with the decorations for the event, and Gus supplied a brand new SRYC sign. Everything looked great, although a few people were having way too much fun with the Martha Stewart snowflake maker. They may need to get out a little more. Gary Sorrell’s name tag was interesting. Gary, is Offshore Assount a boat name change with a hidden meaning or were you just trying to see if anyone was paying attention? Someone was seen snitching M & M’s at the front door. I won’t mention names; Bob and Jim already know who they are. The door prizes were in abundant supply and offered a lot of fun. The Lynch’s scored a total of twelve times, a new Snowflake record. The Smith’s followed with six and the Skully’s came in at four. Even Molly was a winner. Thanks Helena! There were a few memorable favorites. Maura’s glasses and Captain Morgan on two consecutive tickets caught everyone’s attention. You gonna share that? All Astern Full! Page 5
