twenty-three 23 You have some free time. Which of these activities
In Unit 2 we get to know Elly. She spends a lot of her time at flea markets. Why do you think she does this? You have some free time. Which of these activities would you choose to do? Why? twenty-three 23 2 Step 1 A shopping spree 2 T 1/10 The flea market Going to flea markets and looking for antiques is one of Donna’s favourite pastimes. Mike’s hobby is collecting old cinema posters and he sometimes finds these at flea markets. Donna and Mike met at a local flea market yesterday. (D = Donna, E = Elly, girl at the flea market stall, M = Mike) D: Look at those, Mike. What a fantastic selection of clothes! I love these old styles. M: Me, too. They remind me of 1940 Hollywood film stars – Ingrid Bergman, Joan Crawford ... E: Yes, they’re mostly from the 1940s – they belonged to my grandmother. She made a lot of them herself. D: Really? 1 Starter: What are you wearing? Everybody should say one sentence about something they are wearing (clothes or jewellery): My grandmother gave me this necklace for my 18 th birthday. / These shoes are really comfortable and they weren’t expensive. x My trousers are new. / These jeans are from America. E: Yes, clothes were her hobby. She had a wonderful collection and she kept all her favourites – like other people keep photographs, she kept her clothes. She said they were her memories. D: What a lovely idea. E: Well, yes, but when she died there were boxes and boxes of clothes in her house – skirts, dresses, blouses and even her wedding dress. I took some of the things for myself. But I’ve got lots of things left. M: Look – I work for Granada TV and the studios often need period costumes – hats, shoes, handbags and things. I’ll give you my card and, if you’re interested, you can phone me. E: That’s really kind of you. Thanks. My name’s Elly – Elly Peters. M: And I’m Mike Carthy. I’ll look forward to hearing from you, Elly. D: Oh, Mike, look at this! What a great skirt! But I’m not sure if it’ll fit me. E: It is a lovely skirt, isn’t it? That colour really suits you. It looks like your size but maybe you should try it on before you buy it. D: Okay, but where can I try it on? E: Why don’t you go into the Ladies in that café and look at yourself in the mirror in there? D: The Ladies? Oh, the rest room. Yes, good idea. I’ll do that. M: You can leave your bags, Donna. I’ll wait for you here.
