Lower School Library Inventory Thanks to the initiative of Consuelo Mendoza and Marcel Guillerot, and with the help ofPatrick P., the Lower School Library has, for the first time in its history, gone through a complete inventory of the collection. We now know clearly and at a glance what cataloging remains to be done, what has to be corrected, what has been lost and what should be weeded. This allows for a nice fresh start. Consuelo, Veronique, and Patrick will continue the process in the media center this summer. Cliquer sur le bouton pour le français. For the second year in a row, ISB organized a WORLD CLIMATE negotiation simulation which took place in the Church Hall yesterday. Upper School students from the 10th, 11th and 12th grades each played the role of a delegate from a country assigned to them, and there were a few journalists. The simulation used the C-ROADS software developed by MIT and the Climate Interactive program, and was launched after an initial speech by the UN Secretary General. After a first round of negotiations, each delegation made a pledge explained by a speech. Since the target was not reached, there was a second round of negotiations followed by a third round. At the end of this 5-hour exercise, the delegates were able to achieve an increase in temperature limited to 2.7 Celsius! The target of 2 Celsius was not reached, therefore another conference will be held next year. Congratulations to all participants and in particular to Laurent Richard who organized this simulation. Monthly "T" Passes and all stored value Student Charlie Cards will be turned off on June 30th. Students using the Charlie Cards must be sure to spend down any balances by the June 30th deadline - there are no refunds for unspent monies. The "T" does offer Summer Monthly Passes ($26 per month) as well as the free Student Summer Permits (the stored value Charlie Cards) for the months of July and August. Students wishing to order one of these should speak to Martha Mayne immediately. They will need to stop by the school to pick them up at the end of June. The Monthly "T" Passes for the 2014-2015 school year, valid as of September 1st, will be available to students during the last week of August, as will the Student Charlie Cards. The Passes will be $26 per month, and must be completely paid for up front for the entire school year ($260). The Charlie Cards are still free, and then the students put their own money on them at a "T" location. Please see Martha Mayne with any questions and/or to request a Monthly Pass or Charlie Card for the summer month(s), no later than Friday, June 13th. Cliquer sur le bouton pour le français. Objectives of the trip: This trip covered four months of the 11th graders' geology program. Iceland is a geological hot spot and an open-air laboratory which offers the opportunity to explore the field, the opening continents in structural terms (rift fault, rift) and petrographic (basalts, tephra, various other volcanic rocks). This trip also allowed us to study in advance some geothermal elements that are part of the 12th grade science program. The educational objective is to maintain this trip for the 11th grader of the French Bac with the Science Option, around the same time of year (April vacation). What students have learned and discovered: To recognize accurately and automatically different magmatic rocks and forms of basaltic components. To identify the different volcanic events that mark the landscape and the organic life of the island. To understand the development and manifestations of extensive water system associated with the annual evolution of Europe's largest glacier. To discover beautiful landscapes changing every ten minutes: they experienced during excursions whatever the weather may provide (rain, snow, hail, wind, rain, bright sun ... on a 20-minute cycle! ), they hiked through the lava flows of geothermal fields and ice tongues, and they have learned to manage themselves within a group with a particularly contagious good mood. French Cultural Center What they have not learned: Icelandic language! But it might be worth exploring as a cultural option for future trips... Congratulations to all participants and in particular to Pierre Saintin who organized this trip. Cliquer sur le bouton pour le français.
