Kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Hans Jonas

Das Hans Jonas-Zentrum und seine Freunde trauern um die erste Kuratorin der „Kritischen
Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Hans Jonas“, Frau Lore Jonas. Geboren am 3. September 1915,
wuchs sie in Regensburg auf. Ihr Vater Siegfried Weiner, der das juristische Staatsexamen mit
„einem guten Zweier“ abgelegt hatte und gern Richter geworden wäre, aber als Jude nicht in den
Staatsdienst treten konnte, hatte ebendort eine Rechtsanwaltskanzlei. Über ihr Elternhaus und
ihre Jugend schrieb sie einen Erinnerungsbericht, der auch Hinweise auf den ‚alltäglichen
Antisemitismus‘ enthält. Er trägt den Titel „Mein Vater Siegfried Weiner (1886-1963).
Erinnerungen an einen jüdischen Rechtsanwalt in Regensburg“ und ist im „Regensburger
Almanach 1989“ erschienen (Walhalla u. Praetoria Verlag 1988).
Bedroht durch den brutalen, schließlich mörderischen deutschen Rassismus, verließen die Eltern
mit der 17jährigen Tochter Lore und dem sechs Jahre jüngeren Sohn Franz 1933 Deutschland
und wählten das äußerst mühsame Exil in Palästina. Sie selbst konnte als Schülerin der 8.
Gymnasialklasse mit ihrer humanistischen Schulbildung in Jerusalem ebenso wenig anfangen wie
ihr Vater mit der deutschen Rechtsgelehrsamkeit und mußte sich als Putzhilfe durchschlagen, um
die Familie zu unterstützen, bis sie eine Ausbildung als Säuglingsschwester erhalten konnte. 1943
heirateten Lore Weiner und Hans Jonas, die sich 1937 in Jerusalem kennengelernt hatten.
Über ihr Leben nach 1945 erzählt sie in dem Artikel „Two Years in an Arab Village. Peace and
Neighborly Contact During the British Mandate“ (in der Wochenzeitung: Aufbau 2000, Nr. 25),
welcher Eingang fand in die „Erinnerungen” von Hans Jonas (Insel Verlag 2003, S. 243 ff.).
Darüber hinaus ist manches in dem zuletzt genannten Buch enthalten (siehe etwa S. 173-184,
208 ff.).
Bis in ihre letzten Lebenswochen war sie nicht allein geistig präsent und ständige Leserin der
„New York Times“, sondern auch ein Mittelpunkt der Jonas-Rezeption, beriet Jonas-Forscher in
aller Welt und unterstützte das Berliner Hans Jonas-Zentrum, nicht zuletzt unser kühnes Projekt
der „Kritischen Gesamtausgabe“.
Sie entschlief am Freitag, den 27. Januar 2012, friedlich in ihrem Apartment der Seniorenresidenz
von Audubon, bei Philadelphia, nachdem sie weitere medizinische Eingriffe abgelehnt hatte.
Unser Dank an Frau Lore Jonas spiegelt sich auch in dem hier wiedergegebenen Kondolenzbrief,
den Professor Dietrich Böhler und Frau Dr. Christiane Böhler-Auras an die Kinder Ayalah,
Jonathan und Gabrielle geschrieben haben.

Dear Ayalah, dear Gabrielle, dear John,
we want once more to express our sorrow and grief, but also our great gratitude
to your mother Lore who, lifelong, was in love not only with her husband and
her familiy but felt responsible also for his work until to her very end. These
elements of her personality, this unique combination of devotion and inner
independence, of modesty and dignity, shall always be remembered by us. She
was the queen, said Benjamin, our son.
Over and above all that we were happy to become friends with her, which was a
process of some years. We met her, together with your father Hans Jonas, more
than twenty years ago in the north of Norway during a conference about
“Ecology and Ethics” at Melbu, on the isle of Vesteralen. There was at once, so
it seems to me, Dietrich, a deep sympathy between your restrained mother and
us as well as between the older and the younger philosopher. For example, Hans,
leaned on a stick and on me, climbed a hill in order to admire the spectacle of
the midsummer night with the sun reflecting on the fjord. Deeply moved he
recited the great psalm number 90.
But the real beginning of our friendship was in Berlin, in 1992, when I, Dietrich,
as dean invited Professor Jonas to accept the honorary doctorate at the Free
University of Berlin. I shall confess that my welcoming speech in the lecture
hall Auditorium Maximum finished with an homage to Lore which was,
between the lines, almost a declaration of love. Explicitly I valued highly her
role on the side of her husband. For she was both: the sovereign vis-à-vis and the
loving, devotional partner of the great thinker.
In the meantime I dedicated several of my publications to her, at last the
introduction into the “Kritische Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Hans Jonas”.
When I got the audacious idea to edit the widespread works including
manuscripts, papers, interviews, and so on in a philosophically exact manner
(considering all their variants as well as the worldwide echo), Lore accompanied
this project on the one hand with her (sometimes sceptical) soberness, on the
other hand she encouraged me and became the first curator of the critical edition
and supported it by checks.
We met again and again in Germany, in Berlin, in New Rochelle, and I,
Christiane, visited her also in Audubon.
Especially we liked her rational, sober and warm letters, in which we exchanged
news about our children or grandchildren, news about books besides the great
endeavour of the Hans Jonas-Zentrum and the critical complete edition of Hans
Jonas’ works. I, Christiane, asked her, for example, about old friends like
Hannah Arendt and Gershom Scholem – both I knew only from their works.
Once when we didn’t know each other as well as later on, Lore asked me in a
letter – with a certain seriousness in her “voice” –, why I am so interested in
Jewish things. Then I answered her that it was not, in the first place, the guilt of
our parents that inspired me to this position (although it naturally had a great
influence on us), but there was a deep displeasure at the silence and ignorance of
the older generation concerning the Jewish tradition in Europe, the enormous
contribution of the Jews to the culture, especially in Germany. We knew little
about these roots of European history until the presence. In her reply she wrote:
“I was moved by your answer. It makes very good sense”.
Dear Ayalah, dear John, dear Gabrielle, this is only a little part of a manifold of
lively memories. We think a lot of Lore, but also of the three of you. We thank
Ayalah for all her letters, in which she let us know about Lore. Furthermore we
thank you for your offer to support the critical edition of your father’s
voluminous works. We will be busy with these activities till 2016/17. Now we
publish the texts of your father in German or in English – depending on their
original language; the commentaries and introductions are written in German.
We hope that there will be the possibility to publish also a mere English edition
later on.
