What We Have in Common:
Fostering Transcultural Competence
Through Authentic Materials
Workshop by Christina Frei and Bridget Swanson, University of Pennsylvania
This workshop draws on the AP framework for World Languages and translates a theme-based approach
to first-year language instruction. The presenters discuss strategies for creating modules that are
thematically engaging, based in authentic materials, and foster transcultural competence from the start.
Topics include how to structure modules around essential questions, how to integrate reflective journaling,
and how to didacticize authentic material for the beginner. The workshop will be conducted in German.
