Kurt Opsahl is a Senior Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation
(EFF), a civil society organization that fights for civil liberties in the digital age,
focusing on civil liberties, freedom of expression and privacy law. Before joining
EFF in 2004, Mr. Opsahl worked at Perkins Coie, where he represented
technology clients with respect to intellectual property, privacy, defamation, and
other online liability matters. For his work responding to government subpoenas,
Mr. Opsahl is proud to have been called a "rabid dog" by the U.S. Department of
Justice. Prior to Perkins, Mr. Opsahl was a research fellow to Professor Pamela
Samuelson at the U.C. Berkeley School of Information Management & Systems.
Mr. Opsahl received his law degree from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law (Boalt
Hall), and undergraduate degree from U.C. Santa Cruz. He co-authored the
"Electronic Media and Privacy Law Handbook." In 2007, Mr. Opsahl was named
as one of the "Attorneys of the Year" by California Lawyer magazine for his work
on establishing the reporter's privilege for online journalists.

Since 2006, Mr. Opsahl has been litigating multiple cases against the U.S.
government for unlawful surveillance practices, including major ongoing
litigation against the NSA spying program (PRISM/XKeyScore/etc).
Zum Vortragsthema (Herr Opsahl beschreibt seinen Vortrag wie folgt):
“Electronic Frontier Foundation’s attorney Kurt Opsahl will summarize the
known facts about the NSA spying activities, including how the programs operate
and the laws and regulations the U.S. government asserts allows the NSA to spy
on you and to compel internet service providers to assist in that surveillance. This
will cover several key U.S. laws, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance
Act, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Stored Communications Act
and the Patriot Act. He will also discuss the legal and policy ramifications that
have become part of the public debate, including trends towards greater
transparency and enhanced encryption techniques.”

Herr Freund, Senior Associate bei CMS Hasche Sigle in Hamburg, ist ein sehr
erfahrener Anwalt mit Schwerpunkt auf Datenschutz- und IT-Recht. Er hat vor
seiner anwaltlichen Tätigkeit u. a. als Referent beim Hamburgischen Beauftragten
für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit gearbeitet und wird als Co-Referent die
Thematik aus deutscher und EU-rechtlicher Perspektive beleuchten. Mehr

Der Vortrag findet in englischer Sprache statt. Die Teilnahme ist kostenfrei.
