In the past, software was often used by people who either developed it themselves or had special technical knowledge. This meant, however, that a similarly high level of expertise was demanded of all other users. Present and future users have a different understanding of computer software from programmers and also employ it for different purposes. Windows is an excellent operating system in the way it accommodates these new requirements. Thanks to the standard interface and operating principle, the learning effort for users is reduced to those features which are specific to the application itself. The TERMEXpro design software was developed based on this concept and is used to design the operator panels in the TERMEX instrument series. At first sight, the software looks more like a drawing program than a programming environment. It is extremely easy to "draw" your first applications without bothering too much with system-specific details. The learning phase is supported by the integrated "QuickInfo". As soon as you point to an object with the mouse, a short help text is displayed. ! Object oriented operation The program is designed throughout according to the principles of object orientation that are easily understood since they correspond to daily work routines. Simply by clicking on an object with the right mouse button, for instance, you open a popup menu which only includes those functions that can be applied to that particular object. Double clicking with the left mouse button opens a Properties window which lists all individual properties of an object. ! Project Editor The Project Editor is used to manage the individual components of a project. Each project consists of screens, alarms, graphics, fonts, texts and templates. If you need to create a new entry for one of these components, you can open the appropriate Editor automatically simply by double clicking on the required heading. 4 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Before you start Short description ..................................................................................... ! Create screens and alarms After you have created a new alarm or a new screen with the Project Editor, an additional toolbar containing all the available objects appears on the display. Graphic elements such as pixels, lines, rectangles or bars as well as complete graphics can be used to design a project. You can also select text, tags, softkeys and trend views. If you want to insert an object into a screen, you simply click on the appropriate icon in the toolbar with the mouse. Next, you click on the position at which the object must be inserted in the screen. If you want to change the properties of an object later, for instance a tag type, you simply double click on that object to open the appropriate dialog. Alternatively, you can change an object’s properties in the Object Inspector. ! Create fonts The program has a separate Editor for fonts. Using this Editor, any Windows raster fonts can be used for operator panels or further processed for customized special characters. The Editor displays an overview of all characters defined for a particular font. If you want to edit a character, simply double click on it. The character then appears in an enlarged grid in which each pixel can be set or deleted. Once you have defined a font, you can also use it in other projects. ! Transfer to the operator panel After you have created the screens and alarms, the compiler converts them into a form the operator panel can understand. The operator panel itself is connected to a serial port on the PC. During the transfer, the software automatically tests the connection to the operator panel and transfers the project to it via the serial port. 5 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Project structure Before you start ..................................................................................... 1.2 Project structure The typical elements of a TERMEXpro project and their relationships are shown in the diagram below. Fonts 1) Texts Bars Tags 2) Graphics 3) 4) 5) Text field IO field 6) Bar view 11) 7) Graphic elements (lines, points, rectangles, boxes) Softkeys 8) Graphics view Window 9) 10) 12) 13) Screens ALARMS (MULTI) ALARMS (MONO) You create a project with the TERMEXpro project design interface on a Windows PC. Projects consist of objects. Objects can be parts of other objects or assigned to them: 1) Fonts are required to display texts and tags. 2) Tags can be part of a text. 3) Tags are the value basis for bars. 4) Texts are output in text fields. 5) Tags can be output in separate IO fields. 6) Bars are displayed in separate bar views. 7) Graphics are displayed in separate graphics views. 8) Graphic elements can be combined in windows. 9) Graphic elements can be output directly. 10) Softkeys are inserted into screens (TERMEX 2xx/3xx only). 11) Fields are inserted into screens. 12) 13) Fields are inserted into MULTI alarms. Texts are inserted into MONO alarms (TERMEX 2xx/3xx only). 6 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Before you start Before you create your first project... ..................................................................................... 1.3 Before you create your first project... Before you create your first project, there are a number of things you need to consider. Take a few minutes to read the recommendations and tips described below. You can make life much easier for the user of an operator panel in the field if you always arrange the dialog elements in screens and alarms in the same way and assign them the same functions. It makes sense, for instance, to design the key assignment of the softkey bars consistently within a project. This will ease the learning process for users and the programmer has less work with programming and documentation. By using templates, you can simplify future changes to the user interface. If you need to program new screens and alarms, you only have to insert the additional dialog elements. TIP: Try to identify the common features of your screens and alarms and generate templates for them! You can use graphics in bitmap format and customized fonts to design in TERMEXpro. Alternatively, you can insert graphic elements such as lines, rectangles and boxes into the screens. If you want to insert complex graphics or graphics that are frequently required (e.g. a company logo), we recommend using bitmaps. If certain parts of a screen need to be highlighted with borders or lines, it is a good idea to use graphic objects. TIP: Use bitmaps to insert complex graphics or graphics that are frequently required! Please note that texts, tags and graphics are always output in fields. Fields are always snapped to an 8-pixel grid in the X-direction (TERMEX 21x/31x only). The length and height of these fields is always a multiple of the font size. Fields cannot be positioned arbitrarily, in other words! This fact must also be considered in relation to background graphics where input and output values need to be input and output at defined positions in tag fields. You should design your graphics so that the tags can be snapped to an 8-pixel grid position (TERMEX 21x/31x only)! Graphics and customized fonts require a large amount of memory. You should therefore regularly check your accumulated project size by compiling the entire project. IMPORTANT: Fields, graphics, new fonts and graphic elements can only be used on graphic operator panels! Texts, inline tags and softkeys can be used on text operator panels. Please remember when designing screens that you can only open a maximum of 50 (TERMEX 21x/31x) or 150 (TERMEX 770) fields at once. Every text, tag or graphic is normally displayed in a separate field. To optimize the output, you can design text fields with more than one line or use inline tags. This simplifies the alignment of tables and speeds up your work. You can have up to 255 (TERMEX 2xx/3xx) or 512 (TERMEX 750) screens in one project. TIP: Try combining texts and tags in the same field! Tags, graphics and fonts must be defined before they can be used in a screen. You must differentiate between definitions and outputs. When you define a tag, for instance, you specify the tag type, the format and the position in the data block using the Tag Editor. Once tags have been defined, they can be positioned in the Screen Editor using fields. IMPORTANT: Each tag is only allowed to be output once in a screen! Tags require a fixed number of data words in the data block, depending on the tag type. We recommend specifying the number of tags and their position in the data block before you design your project. You can then begin programming the host computer at the same time. A total of 178 (TERMEX 2xx/3xx) or 433 (TERMEX 770) data words are available for tags. Tags that form a group and that must be transferred together should be stored in directly consecutive positions in the data block. Whole blocks can then be transferred when data is exchanged with the host computer. Up to 300 (TERMEX 2xx/3xx) or 1000 (TERMEX 770) tags can be defined. 7 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Project organization Before you start ..................................................................................... TIP: Combine the internal tags or the tags belonging to one screen in a compact block in the data block! Alarms provide information about abnormal operating states which may last for a limited period of time and then be either deactivated or acknowledged. If an alarm is canceled, the original display contents that were hidden by the alarm are visible again. Alarms are not suitable for indicating permanent states, because only one alarm can be displayed at a time. Operator panels differentiate between MONO alarms (TERMEX 2xx/3xx) and MULTI alarms (TERMEX 21x/31x/770). A maximum of 512 alarms are available within a project. TIP: If your alarms consist of text only, we recommend using MONO alarms (TERMEX 2xx/3xx only)! 1.4 Project organization The Editors show all the different parts of a project in a tree structure. There are three main levels to differentiate: ! Type The entries on the top level are differentiated according to their type. There are texts, for instance, tags, graphics, templates, screens, MONO alarms and MULTI alarms. ! Group The Group level was introduced to make large projects more transparent. Groups allow types to be further subdivided. They form Folders that group a set of entries together. For instance, you could define three groups – Information, Warnings and Errors – to categorize MULTI alarms. ! Entry Entries are located on the lowest level. An entry is always assigned to a group and a type. For example, an entry can represent a text list, a tag list, a graphic, a screen, a MONO alarm list or a MULTI alarm list. 8 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Graphics operator panels ..................................................................................... 1.5 Graphics operator panels Graphics operator panels allow you maximum freedom to design the display. Text and graphic elements can be combined in any way. Graphics, freely definable fonts, bars, softkey bars, and graphic elements can be used for project design on a graphics operator panel. The operator panels have a display size of 240 x 128 pixels (TERMEX 23x, TERMEX 33x) or 640 x 480 pixels (TERMEX 770). Objects are positioned in the display with pixel accuracy. Graphics operator panels have a window-oriented user surface for simple display building. Both MONO alarms (TERMEX 2xx/3xx) and MULTI alarms (TERMEX 2xx/3xx, TERMEX 770) can be output. The following graphics operator panels are available: TERMEX 23x TERMEX 33x TERMEX 770 1.6 Text operator panels Text operator panels have an output area of 4 lines times 20 characters. All information is output in a 12 mm high font. Outputs consist of text or inline tags, which can be positioned anywhere in the lines and columns. A softkey bar can be assigned to each screen. Graphics, freely definable fonts, bars, and graphic elements cannot be used on text operator panels. Only MONO alarms can be output. MULTI alarms are not available. The following text operator panels are available: TERMEX 22x TERMEX 32x 9 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 System requirements for TERMEXpro and EPCA Installation ..................................................................................... 2 Installation 2.1 System requirements for TERMEXpro and EPCA The following software and hardware is required to install TERMEXpro and EPCA: • • • • • • • • PC with a Pentium or faster processor (or another compatible processor) Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 installed) or Windows XP Hard disk with 70 MB free memory SVGA graphics card with at least 65536 colors (800x600) CD-ROM drive At least 128 MB RAM Windows-compatible mouse Free serial port for transferring projects to the operator panel The following components are not essential, but will considerably increase the speed of TERMEXpro and EPCA as well as making them generally more convenient to use: • • 256 MB RAM (or more) SVGA graphics card with 1024 x 768 resolution (or higher) * Windows is a registered trademark of the Microsoft Corporation. 10 © Pepperl+Fuchs - EXTEC GmbH Version: installation_11E.doc/ 14.11.2005 1 Installation How to install TERMEXpro ..................................................................................... 2.2 How to install TERMEXpro TERMEXpro is installed by an automatic setup program.
