Summary:
In search of the sound of Europe, or, in other words, the consideration of the different faces
of Europe. We walk on a narrow path between optimism which is damped by the pessimism
of some countries or their people. There are many varying opinions considering the approach
to Europe, for example the Austrian chancellor as advocate for the European unification or
the dramatic political setback that was the rejection of the European constitution by the
French people. But there are also some trying to redress the balance and pessimism that it is
prevailing in the European Union is exaggerated. The EU is more successful than most of
the people perceive. The informal search for an identity has only just begun. Nobody knows
whether it will ever become a melody. That is how it sounds, the Sound of Europe.

Looking for the Sound of Europe: This sound can only resemble the sound of a choir of many
voices that has to work hard if it does not want to insult Mozart’s legacy. Since the composer
has his 250th birthday, it goes without saying that the politicians will turn towards the maestro
when looking for Europe’s future: the maestro is supposed to find answers to fundamental
questions: What is the face of Europe? Does it have one, or many? Does Europe need a
common identity? Or does it already have an identity but nobody has discovered it so far, let

alone has maintained it on a global stage. And since it is also the anniversary of the
liberation from Auschwitz, the Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel is directing the
European choir: The European identity is influenced by heaven and hell. Dark abysses and
the desire for permanent reason have doubtlessly triggered the European Unification
process. However, that will not end the crisis of the European Union that nobody denies,
even though the Austrian chancellor and President of the Council absolutely does not want to
use the word crisis.

disharmony in his own country is overshadowing his presidency of the Council.

Dissonances accompany the contemplation about Europe. The question is how much time
the politicians will take for that. For India and China are gaining power, not only as far as the
economy is concerned.
Maybe that is also the reason why Jan Peter Balkenende is against talking too much about a
crisis of the European Union. The Dutch prime minister would rather not speak about it
anymore. Mr. Balkenende prefers to refer to the historical dimension.

He is of the opinion that the pessimism that it is prevailing in the European Union is
exaggerated. He thinks that the EU is more successful than most of the people perceive.

Die Suche nach dem Sound of Europe, nach dem Ton, nach dem Klang Europas. Dieser
Sound kann wohl nur dem Gesang eines vielstimmigen Chors gleichen, der sich gehörig
anstrengen muß, wenn er Mozarts Erbe nicht beleidigen will. Wenn sich also am 250.
Geburtstag des Meisters die Politik auf die Suche nach der Zukunft Europas begibt, dann
wird der Komponist unvermeidbar in Anspruch genommen: Antworten soll er geben. Und die
Fragen hier sind grundsätzliche: Welches Gesicht hat Europa ? Hat es eines oder viele ?
Braucht Europa eine gemeinsame Identität ? Oder hat es diese Identität längst, nur dass sie
bisher keiner entdeckt hat, geschweige denn gepflegt im globalen Konzert. Und weil sich an
diesem Tag auch die Befreiung von Auschwitz jährte, schlägt Österreichs Bundeskanzler
Wolfgang Schüssel den europäischen Spannungsbogen: Himmel und Hölle, beides prägt die
europäische Identität. Der Blick in die Abgründe und die Sehnsucht nach dauerhafter
Vernunft haben zweifellos die europäische Vereinigung in Gang gesetzt. Aber das hilft
wenig, jene Krise zu bewältigen, in die die Europäische Union nach allgemeiner
Übereinstimmung geraten ist, auch wenn der österreichische Bundeskanzler und
Ratspräsident das Wort Krise partout nicht in den Mund nehmen will.

Der österreichische Bundeskanzler gilt als Verfechter der europäischen Einigung. Doch
Disharmonie im eigenen Land begleitet die Ratspräsidentschaft.

Vielleicht auch deshalb wendet sich Jan Peter Balkenende gegen das Herbeireden einer
Europa-Krise. Der niederländische Ministerpräsident würde darüber am liebsten nicht mehr
reden. Balkenende bemüht stattdessen die historische Dimension.
