Schriftliche Realschulabschlussprüfung 2000 im Fach Englisch − Prüfungsarbeit (Leseverstehenstest) II 2 Leseverstehenstest (RCT) THE TRUTH ABOUT KIDS TODAY What is it like to be a young person today? Earlier this year, The Guardian decided to find out. Over 500 children between the ages of 11 and 15 living throughout Britain were asked about their likes, dislikes, their hopes and thoughts. The survey shows that the one thing young people are most worried about is their chance of getting a job when they leave school (72 per cent). Suzanne Lucas, 11, who lives with her unemployed mother and sister in Edinburgh, would not like to end up like her mother. "She's split up with my Dad and she's got no job and she's got two children to look after," Suzanne explained to The Guardian. "I really want to get a good education and finish school. Today, without good qualifications, they won’t even accept you as a trainee." In Britain, youngsters spend most of the day at school, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Evenings are usually not free, as there is homework to do; an average of about one and a half hours a night for this age group. According to the survey, the rest of the time is divided between playing with friends or family, listening to music and, above all, watching TV or videos. In fact, young people watch TV 11 hours 45 minutes a week on average. That is six times longer than they spend reading, writes The Guardian. According to the survey, youngsters receive about £ 5.25 pocket money a week. That's why shopping is another popular activity among young people. They spend their money on clothes, CDs, magazines, tickets for concerts or the cinema and computer equipment. Nearly three hours a week they spend playing computer games. "I think you have to learn about computers if you are going to get a job these days," explained 15-year-old Mark who would like to work for a computer firm near his home town, Manchester. Bullying is a very serious problem in British schools. The survey found that more than half the children were bullied, usually because of their appearance. "If you don't look good you can get into trouble at school. There's a fat kid in our class and he is called 'Fatty'. If you wear sports clothes without a name on them like Adidas, you get bullied," Max Jackson, 15, explained. Drugs are also a problem in secondary schools. One in three 11- to 15-year-olds said someone had offered them drugs and one in ten had taken them. Most said they felt they knew enough about the danger of drug use. "I've been offered hash," Roxanne admitted, "but I haven't taken it. A girl I know died four months ago. It was probably heroin. Leah Betts is the one that took Ecstasy – people take it at raves. I think it's very good that such drugs are not legal. They're worse than alcohol and it worries me that the stuff is even sold in our school playground." 492 words Schriftliche Realschulabschlussprüfung 2000 im Fach Englisch − Prüfungsarbeit (Leseverstehenstest) AI 3 Comprehension 1.
