Crossed looks on architecture

Multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, crossdisciplinary architecture: these three concepts involve the variety of disciplines which are at the base
of each project. If the first word refers to an association of disciplines to work together for a common achievement, the second one, more
ambitious, also means a teamwork, but the effort concentrates more on the cooperation between the different members. Each partners’ look
contributes to the group. The last concept connects the disciplines to each other by cultivating “an interior soil where subjective looks and
objective data are associated like microorganisms in humus” This schematic definition leads to the question of architecture’s specificity which
like all creation process refers to different knowledges in permanent evolution. The use of tools able to redefine the ways of working together
is an essential component of architecture. Perhaps must one look for the specificity of architecture in its finality: transform the reality with a
strong imprint on the real? This imprint is the result of a development involving varied knowledge and know-how. The selection criteria of the
Audi Urban Future Award launched in 2010 was the capacity of the architectural studios to achieve crossdisciplinary projects and to transcribe
their ideas in pertinent aesthetic forms. The winner was no one else than Jürgen Mayer, our portrait of the month. His practice is fed with
artistic installations, with a predilection for technical challenges - the vast wooden structure about to become the symbol of the town of Seville
is a nice example - and with the development of new materials. The latter illustrate the substance release and the new structuring approaches,
feasible thanks to computers. One remembers also the Water Cube with a translucent skin almost organic (Chris Bosse, PTW Architects & Arup),
one of the highlights of the Beijing Olympic Games. These projects reveal a deep swing between the look and the use. As such, the interaction
with digital arts where image becomes substance is still widely to be explored.

Architecture pluridisciplinaire, interdisciplinaire, transdisciplinaire: ces trois concepts impliquent la variété des disciplines à la base
de tout projet aujourd’hui. Si le premier terme parle d’association de disciplines concourant à une réalisation commune, le deuxième,
plus ambitieux, consiste aussi à un travail d’équipe, mais l’effort est d’avantage mis à la coopération entre les différents membres. Le
regard de l'un et de l'autre enrichit l’ensemble. Quant au dernier, il relie entre elles des disciplines en cultivant « un terroir intérieur
où regards subjectifs et données objectives sont associés entre eux comme les microorganismes dans l'humus. » Cette définition
schématique amène à la question de la spécificité de l’architecture qui, comme tout processus de création, se réfère à des savoirs
différents en permanente évolution. L’utilisation d’outils à même de redéfinir les modes de travailler ensemble est une composante
primordiale de l’architecture. Peut être faut-il alors rechercher la spécificité de l’architecture dans sa finalité: la transformation de
la réalité caractérisée par une empreinte forte sur le réel ? Cette empreinte est le fruit d’un développement qui implique une mise en
relation de connaissances et de savoir-faire variés. Le critère de sélection de l’Audi Urban Future Award lancé en 2010 était la capacité
de ces bureaux à réaliser des projets transdisciplinaires et à transcrire leurs idées dans des formes esthétiques pertinentes.
Le lauréat n’était autre que Jürgen Mayer H, notre portrait du mois. Sa pratique architecturale se nourrit d’installations artistiques,
d’une prédilection pour les défis techniques - la vaste résille en bois en passe de devenir le symbole de la ville de Séville en est un
bel exemple - et du développement de nouveaux matériaux. Ceux-ci illustrent la libération de la matière et les approches inédites
de structuration, rendues possibles grâce à l’informatique. On se souvient également du Water Cube à la peau translucide et quasi
organique (Chris Bosse, PTW Architects et Arup), l’un des fleurons des JO de Pékin. Ces projets sont révélateurs d’un basculement profond
entre le regard et l’usage. A ce titre, l’interaction avec les arts numériques où l’image devient matière, reste largement à explorer.

Noticed for his visionary conceptions, the German
architect Jürgen Mayer H. shows his crossdisciplinary
approach by basing his work on the communication
and the relation between human body, technology
and nature.

Born in Stuttgart, Jürgen Mayer H. (°1965) is the architect of the famous
Metropol Parasol, a strong and peculiar construction in the heart of
Seville, inaugurated last year. Winner of an international contest, the
architect designs with poetry astonishing parasols in a wooden canopy
developed at the city’s roof level. Let’s come back for a moment to his
career. After studying at the Stuttgart University, at the Cooper Union
of New York and at Princeton University, Jürgen Mayer H. founded his
studio in Berlin in 1966.It soon becomes famous for the strong cultural
content of its projects. La Mensa Moltke, “elastic” space at the centre
of the Karlsruhe University and Dupli Casa near Ludwigsburg with a
sophisticated envelop in immaculate coated concrete are two projects
with unusual forms immediately catching the eye.
In Georgia, the original profile of the new Mestia airport building,
medieval town included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, is part of an
ambitious plan to develop tourism in the area.
In the same country at the Turkish border on the Black Sea shore, a
customs checkpoint shelters a range of cantilevering terraces. The

tower is used as a viewing platform, with multiple levels, overlooking
the water and the steep part of the coastline.
In Denmark, the two buildings with irregular outline erected in the
Danfoss Universe science park serve also as limit between landscape
and green spaces on one side and constructions and technology on the
other. The architect imagined them as two huge earth clods springing
from the soil. Their silhouette is intriguing, encouraging observation and
discovery, whilst respecting the spirit of the science park, especially
created to stimulate knowledge.
With office and residential spaces, the four new buildings in the historical
centre of Jena (Germany) allow for free access through the park. Their
placement on the outer edges of the plot defines a small-scale outdoor
space congruent with the medieval city structure.
As to the imposing new Justice Palace of Hasselt (Belgium), in
cooperation with a20 architecten /Lens°Ass architects (Twins) and
the Eurostation engineering company, it fits very well into the cultural
identity of the city. The central part has a “tree” form, respecting the

Erected in the medieval centre of the city, a large
canopy shelters a new covered market and the
presentation of archaeology excavations, whilst
giving a new life to the sleeping square. With the
architect’s creativity, an extraordinary technical
expertise has been developed by the engineers
of Arup and the Finnforest company to root these
giant mushrooms made of glued Kerto-Q laminated
veneer lumber panels.
Implantée dans le centre médiéval de la ville, une
grande résille abrite un nouveau marché couvert et
la présentation de fouilles archéologiques tout en
revitalisant une place endormie. Face à la créativité
de l’architecte, une extraordinaire expertise
technique a été développée avec les ingénieurs
d’Arup et l’entreprise Finnforest pour enraciner ces
champignons géants en panneaux de lamellé collé
haute technologie.

on an Urban development block with a high rise for office, hotel, wellness and
commercial use in the Quartier M in Düsseldorf.
With a work which fascinates by its strange beauty, Jürgen Mayer H. has received
many honours, among which a special Mention for Emerging Architects Mies van
der Rohe Award (2003) and the International Architecture Prize from the Athenaeum
in Chicago (2009).
Habitual elements at the basis of his work, the encrypted numbers and dates in
Data Protection Pattern (DPP) serve to create numerous buildings, drawings,
objects or astonishing installations. 3D models can thereby translate in
concrete forms motives in two dimensions. These considerably enlarged
repetitive elements are clearly present in Mayer’s façade designed for the
“The Street” exhibition taking place at the Hong Kong Urban and Architecture
Biennale. If the architect concentrates on the digital technology, the starting
point is however an existing urban environment. The results achieved are
quite interesting and unexpected. Technology does not determine results but
becomes a tool for the opening of new urban spaces to multiple interventions.
A way to conceive this technology is to help to humanize our too densely
populated cities.

Remarqué pour ses conceptions visionnaires, l’architecte
allemand Jürgen Mayer H. fait preuve d’une approche
transdisciplinaire pour baser ses travaux
sur la communication et la relation entre le corps humain,
la technologie et la nature.
Né à Stuttgart, Jürgen Mayer H. (°1965) est l’auteur du fameux Metropol
Parasol, construction puissante et singulière en plein cœur de Séville,
inaugurée l’an dernier. Lauréat d’un concours international, l’architecte
conçoit avec poésie d’étonnants parasols en résille de bois, dépliés à
hauteur des toits de la ville. Mais revenons un instant sur son parcours.
Après des études à l'Université de Stuttgart, à la Cooper Union de
New York et à Princeton University, Jürgen Mayer H. fonde son agence
à Berlin, en 1996. Rapidement, celle-ci se distingue par des projets à
forte signification culturelle. La Mensa Moltke, espace ‘élastique’ au
centre du campus de l'Université de Karlsruhe et la Dupli.Casa près
de Ludwigsburg, à l’enveloppe sophistiquée en béton enduit immaculé,
sont deux projets aux formes insolites qui attirent immédiatement
l’attention. En Géorgie, le bâtiment au profil particulier du nouvel
aéroport de Mestia, ville médiévale inscrite au patrimoine mondial
de l'UNESCO, fait partie d’un plan ambitieux destiné à développer le

tourisme dans la région. Dans le même pays, à la frontière turque au
bord de la mer Noire, un poste de douane tel un checkpoint abrite une
série de terrasses à encorbellement, élevées au sein de chaque pli.
La tour est utilisée comme une plateforme d'observation à plusieurs
niveaux donnant sur l'eau et la partie abrupte de la côte. Au Danemark,
les deux bâtiments au contour irrégulier, implantés dans le parc
scientifique Danfoss Universe, servent en même temps de limite entre
le paysage et les espaces verts d'une part, les constructions et la
technologie de l'autre. L'architecte les a imaginés comme des mottes
de terre gigantesques sortant du sol. Leur silhouette intrigue, invite à
l'observation et à la découverte, en interprétant ainsi l'esprit du parc,
créé justement pour stimuler la connaissance.
Destinés à des espaces de bureaux et résidentiels les quatre nouveaux
bâtiments situés dans le centre historique de Jena, en Allemagne,
permettent un accès libre à travers le parc. Leur implantation en
bordure extérieure de parcelle définit un espace en plein air en
harmonie avec la structure de la ville médiévale. Quant à l’imposant
nouveau Palais de Justice de Hasselt (Belgique), en collaboration avec
a2o-architecten / Lens°Ass architects (Twins) et le bureau d’études
Eurostation, il s’inscrit parfaitement dans l’identité culturelle de
la ville. Sa partie centrale reprend clairement la forme d’un arbre,

est actuellement en charge d’un bâtiment commercial avec bureaux
et hôtel qui va s’intégrer dans le plan d'urbanisme du "Quartier M"
à Düsseldorf. Avec une œuvre qui fascine par son étrange beauté,
Jürgen Mayer H. a déjà reçu bien des honneurs, entre autre une
Mention spéciale au Prix Mies van der Rohe architectes émergents
(2003) ou le Prix d'architecture internationale de l'Athenaeum de
Chicago (2009).
Éléments récurrents à la base de son travail, les numéros et dates
cryptés dans les schémas de protection des données (DPP ou Data
Protection Pattern) servent à créer de nombreux bâtiments, des
dessins, des objets ou d’étonnantes installations. Des modèles
tridimensionnels traduisent ainsi en formes concrètes des motifs en
deux dimensions. Ces éléments répétitifs considérablement élargis
sont bien présents dans la façade de Mayer conçue pour l’exposition
« The Street », à la Biennale de l'Urbanisme et Architecture de Hong
Kong. Si l’architecte se concentre sur la technologie numérique,
le point de départ est toutefois un environnement urbain existant.
Cela conduit à des résultats aussi intéressants qu’inattendus.
La technologie ne détermine pas les résultats mais devient un
instrument pour l'ouverture de l'espace urbain à des interventions
multiples. Une manière de concevoir cette technologie au service de
l'humanisation de nos villes trop denses.

The extravagant façade of the office building where the NGO SAHRDC
– South Asian Human Rights Documentation Centre- is located gave
the duo of architects Valbhav Dimri and Madhav Raman a worldwide
reputation The project is however quite modest : built on a 50 sqm plot.
With few resources, the architects have conceived the external wall as
a dynamic skin which reflects the busy pedestrian street with complex
brick motives, whilst preserving some intimacy.
Architectural effects generated by a simple brick are also to be found in
the Gairola House, a peri-urban multiple apartment house for the rental
market. The animated play in volumes and voids is further fleshed out
with juxtaposition of materials and textures. The surface cladding patterns correspond to the openings. As a result, a dynamic concept with
urban lifestyle fulfilling the need for privacy and individuality.
In the same spirit, the Metabolic House , wrapped with its ceramic tiles,
is conceived as a residence of manipulated volumes capable of complex

environmental process and meaningful spatial interactions, through its
juxtaposed spaces, its light wells, its voids, its cuttings and its buffer
spaces. The light system uses an open façade for maximum day-lighting
and traditional shading screens, inspired by the Rajasthan traditional
architecture. To minimize the building’s environmental footprint, the
traditional passive systems are supported by modern active systems:
green walls, photovoltaic panels, hybrid cooling systems, double glazing, rain water collection, grey water treatment, etc. The idea of this
project is to think of a house where one lives, breathes and produces
more than just a dead object.
Working for an environmental friendly architecture and for responsible
lifestyles is the guide lines of the two architects and their assistants.
They describe themselves as an architecture and consultant practice in spatial design. Anagram Architects was founded in New Delhi
exactly ten years ago by Mahdav Raman and Vaibhav Dimr, just after
graduating in city planning and architecture. As well as traditional
architectural practice, they are also involved in design for films, televi-
sion and theatre. Enthusiastically they explore these as opportunities
to investigate spatial design and endeavour to provide innovative and
fresh design solutions by delving into their rich experience in various
fields, remaining open to all the new building materials technologies
whilst respecting the traditional construction methods.
Among the public projects, it is important to point out the Land
Customs Station at the border between India and Bangladesh to
take care of all customs and immigration formalities for goods
and passengers travelling between the two countries. The LCS is to
become a portal between two culturally linked populations.
Sustainable material, the bamboo, in its multiple forms, is a deeply
significant cultural anchor for people on both sides of the border.
Inspired by the ubiquitous gateways and fences of the region, the
design reinterprets their traditional sophistication in bamboo craft
in a modular steel-bamboo construction with the aim of keeping this
deeply sustainable material, relevant to modern construction.
As a conclusion we want to mention a not yet executed project
the Interstice House, an endeavour to bring in a new way of life.
The residential spaces are ensconced in a structural exo-skeleton zigzag between the two introverted vegetal façades irrigated
by harvested rainwater. Because of its meandering structure, an
internal area and a lot of interstitial spaces are created, thereby
contributing to greater visibility and emotional contacts between
inhabitants. The building looks definitely modern: sharp angles,
straight lines, geometric motives. However the underlying theme
remains traditional. “Today our cities have become enclaves, underline the two Anagram architects. In order to sustain the almost
paranoid desire for extreme privacy and private ownership, we
have forgotten the community spaces and the shared resources” .
In all their projects Valbhav Dimri and Madhav Raman want to enrich elemental modernity and intensive research into traditional
as well as non-conventional practices evolving culturally relevant,
contextually responsive and resource efficient design solutions.

L’extravagante façade en briques de l’immeuble de bureaux de l’ONG
SAHRDC - South Asian Human Rights Documentation Center (Centre
de documentation pour les droits de l’Homme d’Asie du Sud) a fait
connaître le duo d’architectes Valbhav Dimri et Madhav Raman dans
le monde entier. Le projet est cependant bien modeste : des espaces
de bureaux construits sur un terrain de 50 m2. Avec peu de moyens,
les architectes ont conçu la paroi extérieure comme un habillage
qui, tout en maintenant un certain degré d’intimité, reflète l'effervescence de la rue avec des motifs complexes en briques. Ceux-ci, à
la manière des brise-soleil sculptés, sont inspirés par l’architecture
traditionnelle indienne. Des effets architecturaux générés à partir
d’une simple brique se retrouvent également dans la Gairola House,
maison périurbaine destinée à la location, intégrant plusieurs appartements. Ce projet exploite un jeu d'animation de vides et de volumes
cubiques qui mise sur la juxtaposition de matériaux et de textures.
Les motifs du revêtement répondent à la position des ouvertures.
Résultat : un ensemble dynamique pour un style de vie urbain et la
prise en compte des besoins d'intimité et d'individualité. Dans un
même esprit, la Metabolic House habillée de carreaux en céramique
manipule des volumes complexes, des interactions spatiales et des
connexions visuelles à travers ses espaces juxtaposés, ses puits de
lumière, ses vides, ses découpes et ses espaces tampons. La façade
ouverte offre un maximum de lumière naturelle modulée par le biais
d’écrans inspirés par l’architecture traditionnelle du Rajasthan. Afin
de minimiser l'empreinte énergétique du bâtiment, les systèmes traditionnels passifs sont soutenus par des systèmes modernes actifs :
murs verts, panneaux photovoltaïques, système hybride de refroidissement de l’air, fenêtres à double vitrage, collecte des eaux de pluie,
traitement des eaux grises, etc. Le projet envisage une maison qui vit,
respire, produit plutôt que d'être simplement un bloc inerte.
Œuvrer pour une architecture respectueuse de l'environnement et
pour des modes de vie responsables, telle est la base de la pratique
des deux architectes et de leurs collaborateurs. Se décrivant comme
un bureau d’architecture et de conseil en design spatial, Anagram
Architects est fondé à New Delhi voici tout juste dix ans par Madhav Raman et Vaibhav Dimr, fraîchement diplômés en urbanisme et
architecture. Si leur axe majeur reste la pratique architecturale traditionnelle, ils s’impliquent également dans la conception artistique et la
scénographie pour le cinéma, la télévision et le théâtre. Enthousiastes,
ils s'efforcent de fournir des produits innovants, évoluant autour notamment d’une sensibilisation aux derniers développements dans la
technologie des matériaux de construction et dans les pratiques de
construction traditionnelle.
Parmi les projets d’espaces publics, on notera la grande installation
Land Customs Station située à la frontière de l’Inde et du Bangladesh
et destinée aux services de transports, de douanes, d'immigration
pour les marchandises et les passagers qui voyagent entre les deux
contrées. L'axe principal est un portail entre deux peuples culturellement liés. Matériau durable, le bambou y est utilisé sous ses multiples
formes. Inspirée par les clôtures omniprésentes et les passerelles de la
région, la conception réinterprète avec sophistication le fut en bambou
traditionnel dans une construction modulaire.

est résolument moderne : angles vifs, lignes droites, motifs géométriques. Pourtant, le thème sous-jacent est traditionnel. « Aujourd'hui,
soulignent les deux architectes d’Anagram, nos villes sont devenues
des enclaves. Avec ce désir presque paranoïaque de la vie privée à
l’extrême et de la propriété individuelle, nous avons oublié les espaces
communautaires et les ressources partagées. » Quel que soit le projet, Valbhav Dimri et Madhav Raman veulent « enrichir la modernité
avec des recherches intensives au sein de pratiques traditionnelles et
de pratiques non conventionnelles, évoluant vers des solutions culturellement pertinentes, contextuellement réactives et des solutions
conceptuelles efficaces en termes de ressources. »

En guise de conclusion, nous vous livrons un projet non réalisé, l’Interstice House, destinée à explorer un nouveau mode de vie. Les espaces
résidentiels sont installés dans une structure qui zigzague entre deux
façades végétales irriguées par l'eau de pluie récoltée. Cette structure
sinueuse permet de créer des espaces interstitiels, contribuant ainsi
à un meilleur lien entre les habitants. L'aspect général du bâtiment

Settled on the island Seguin, in the middle of a garden, this short-lived
restaurant intends to reoccupy the space pending the implementation
of Jean Nouvel’s macro-project. This temporary dimension opens a field
for expression and stimulating liberty whilst shaking the rules and
constraints of perennial projects which often limit creativity. Between
barge and agricultural greenhouse, oil platform and wooden house,
Pierre Schneider and François Wunschel’s building is voluntarily hybrid.
Indeed, a big wooden fibre box insulating the restaurant hangs in a scaffolding structure, to which are hooked some freight containers. The whole
sheltered by a transparent cover. This astonishing combination put on a
300 sqm land is striking. The starred chef Arnaud Daguin works there. The
restaurant occasionally can be sublimated by video and lightning effects.
For 1024 Architecture they are not at their first try to link the built and
virtual worlds. This inventiveness mixing low and high tech in the same
movement comes across the tool range used by the two designers, trained
at the Strasburg Architecture School. They use many simple, unprocessed
and standardized materials most often coming from the building site or
linked to industrialisation, transport and conditioning processes.

Implanté sur l’Île Seguin, au milieu d’un jardin, ce restaurant éphémère a pour vocation d’amorcer une réoccupation du lieu en attendant
la mise en œuvre du macro projet de Jean Nouvel. Cette dimension
provisoire ouvre un territoire d’expression et de liberté stimulant,
en bousculant les règles et les contraintes des projets pérennes qui
limitent bien souvent la créativité. Entre péniche et serre agricole, plateforme pétrolière et maison en bois, le bâtiment de Pierre Schneider et
François Wunschel se veut volontairement hybride. En effet, une grande
boite en fibre de bois servant d’isolant au restaurant est suspendue
dans une structure en échafaudage à laquelle viennent s’accrocher des
conteneurs de fret. Le tout abrité sous un couverture transparente. Cet
assemblage étonnant monté sur une superficie de 300 m2 capte immédiatement le regard. Le restaurant peut être sublimé ponctuellement
par de la vidéo et des effets de lumière. 1024 Architecture n’en est pas à

The extension project of this school complex aimed to give it a
great green space. The new school is conceived as a vast system
with many levels and different accessibilities. In the original kernel
of the system, the classrooms are in close relation with the external space designed like a garden. For the inside communication,
a tunnel winds through the patios and study rooms, rest rooms
and leisure spaces. A dry construction with wooden skeleton was
chosen as constructing system, giving a great flexibility to the inside space, whilst simplifying operations on the spot and reducing
considerably the time needed to finish the construction.
The building is environment friendly and the bioclimatic strategies enable energy savings and well-being: radiant floor heating
system fed by roof solar panels and condensation boilers, controlled mechanical ventilation with heat recuperation, photovoltaic
panels, rain water catching systems, etc. The project also includes
wooden outside screens to control the sun radiance.

This 143 furnished room project spreads over many buildings with
spaces and voids adapted to the context: three six story volumes
and, at the bottom of the plot, different heights depending on
neighbouring works. This movement opens on a square courtyard
(17m x 17m), key item of this project. Its large size works like a
green lung bringing plenty of sun to the lodgings. The entrance and
the courtyard façades are covered by a larch cladding, contrasting
with the street façades wrapped with slate colour bricks. Leading
ideas of the project: answer the necessity of an urban integration,
optimize the comfort conditions and create a friendly and intimate
complex. Compactedness, envelop treatment, solar contributions
coupled with performing ventilation, as well as an efficient heating
system (city heating plus solar panels) make these lodgings pleasant and comfortable. The thermal insulation is reinforced thanks
to a12 cm mineral wool layer on the outside of the structure and
double glazing windows.

Based on the conception of piled up concrete modules and installed in about 10 days, this 57 student apartment project aims
to adapt to the low density of the urban environment, giving priority to the direct relation between the students and the nature.
There are four stages to be followed: manufacturing, transporting,
installation and connexion. The first phase made in a factory is
economical and takes less time and energy, with a better control
and less waste. Furthermore the modules can be dismantled and
reused elsewhere. A part from the central kernel (bathroom and
kitchen) the available space in each module can be freely organized. One of the main objectives was the excellent sustainability
and energetic efficiency thanks to the ventilated façades with solar protection reinforced by plants on galvanised meshes, vegetal
roofing protecting against solar radiance, the condensation boiler heating system fed by solar panels, the rain water collecting
systems, etc. The lodging units are of high thermal inertia level
accepting the production of passive free cooling during the night.
And by covering the collective patio one generates a 1000 sqm bioclimatic space.

Basé sur une conception de modules empilés en béton pouvant se mettre en place en une dizaine de jours, ce projet de 57
appartements pour étudiants vise à s'adapter à la faible densité
de l'environnement urbain en privilégiant la relation directe des
étudiants avec la nature. Le processus se divise en quatre étapes:
fabrication, transport, placement et connexion. La première phase
réalisée en usine permet des économies de temps et d’énergie, un
contrôle d'exécution plus important, la réduction des déchets. De
plus, les modules superposables peuvent être démontés et réutilisés. En dehors du noyau central (salle de douche et cuisine), la
surface de chaque unité se structure et s’agence librement. L’un
des principaux objectifs a été l'excellence en termes de durabilité et
d'efficacité énergétique grâce aux façades ventilées avec protection
solaire renforcée par des plantes sur maillage galvanisé, à la toiture
verte qui protège du rayonnement solaire, au système de chauffage
à condensation alimenté par des panneaux solaires, au système de
collecte des eaux pluviales, etc. Les unités de logement ont un haut
niveau d'inertie thermique qui admet la production de freecooling
passif pendant la nuit. Et en couvrant le patio collectif, on génère
1000 m2 d’espace bioclimatique.

Spread over an area of 3390 sqm, 490 sqm being for sale and exhibition purposes, this building with irregular planimetry is striking
by its perforated aluminium façade suggesting the effervescent
Prosecco bubbles. More especially at nightfall thanks to the play of
the multicolour LEDs. The conceptual choices aim to reduce energetic needs and the environmental footprint, mainly by creating a
low thermal transmission envelop, with the use of biocompatible
materials: load bearing structure and armed concrete foundations, performing thermal insulation, controlled ventilation, heat
recuperation, thermal glazing, etc
The energy is produced almost exclusively by renewable sources:
photovoltaic panels of about 300 sqm feeding the geothermal heat
pump.

Réparti sur une superficie de 3390 m2, dont 490 m2 destinés à la vente
et à un espace d'exposition, ce bâtiment à la planimétrie irrégulière
se remarque par sa façade en aluminium perforé suggérant l'effervescence des bulles de Prosecco. En particulier la nuit tombée, grâce
au jeu de LED multicolores. Les choix conceptuels ambitionnent de
réduire les besoins énergétiques et l’empreinte environnementale,
en particulier par la création d'une enveloppe à faible transmission thermique et avec l'utilisation de matériaux biocompatibles:
structure portante et fondations en béton armé, isolation thermique
performante, ventilation contrôlée, récupération de chaleur, vitres
thermiques, etc. L'énergie est produite presque entièrement par
des sources renouvelables: des panneaux photovoltaïques d'environ
300 m2 alimentent la pompe à chaleur géothermique.

Exceptional case in architecture: the Chicago practice
founded by William Holabird and Ossian Simonds is now
130 years old.
Started in 1880, Holabird & Roche is an integral part of American
Architecture. The agency becomes rapidly well known by designing
skyscrapers (which have become icons) in the style of the Chicago
School, such as the Tacoma Building (1889) or the Marquette Building,
ended in 1895. By the early 1890s, the agency employed as many
as forty draftsmen and up to a hundred, twenty years later. At that
moment it stood as one of the largest architecture firms in the United
States, designing the Chicago City Hall (1911) and the Palmer House
Hilton (1927). In 1927 after the death of one of the two founders,
the agency changed its name to Holabird & Root, after John Augur
Holabird (William Holabird’s son) and John Wellborn Root.Jr took
over. Throughout the years, their architectural style changes, going
onto Art Deco with the 333 North Michigan Building (34 storeys,
1928), the Palmolive Building (37 storeys, 1929), the Chicago Board of
trade Building (44 storeys, 1930), etc. By this time the firm employed
some 300 people. During many decades, it will closely follow the
transformations of American Architecture. Holabird & Root stays one
of the biggest agencies in Chicago.

If much has changed since 1880, yet much has remained the same.
Especially regarding their approach which believes in the power of
collaboration and not of individualisms, ie the combined efforts of many
specialized experts interacting to produce solutions with greatest value
as a whole. Going through their numerous projects gives a feeling of
specialisation in innovative education buildings. The proof is given by
the Waubonsee College Plano. Situated at Sugar Grove (Illinois), it is
designed as a stand-alone satellite campus. Spread over two stories
the spaces contain classrooms, laboratories, student study areas,
etc all strategically placed to enjoy the view on the Plano Lake. Winner
of many prizes and having obtained the platinum LEED certification,
the highest in terms of sustainability, the Beloit College shows a clear
ecological concept: many environmentally friendly features such as a
green, vegetated roof, high-recycled content in building materials and
furnishings, significant reduction in energy and water use and stormwater cistern for watering plants in the greenhouse.
With a multipurpose central space connecting two adjacent buildings,
its strategic location and its glass façade provide a connection to the
nearby river.
Furthermore, it is worthwhile mentioning the pedestrian cable-stayed
Davenport Skybridge, which has become a touristic attraction with a
magnificent view on the Mississippi River, whilst being the safest way

to cross the highway. The inside of the Skybridge contains kaleidoscope
lighting with 228 LED fixtures and 8036 individual lights.
Managed to-day by James Baird, Jeff Case, Greg Cook and Jim Miller, with
a team of partners and colleagues, Holabird & Root, one can notice, keep
open to innovative methods, new materials and changing technologies.
“Our process encourages individuals to expand their knowledge
through research and discovery in order to allow the company to create
intelligent, attractive and professional solutions. While many of our
projects are complex, we strive to create straightforward solutions. We
believe that great architecture can only result when all of the parts are
fully integrated in a clear well reasoned design.”
As a conclusion let’s come back to the Marquette Building, mentioned
earlier. Referred to as an example of the Chicago School, this building
is one of the first skyscrapers with a steel structure. It is built around
a central courtyard and features several distinct elements that
have earned it honors as a National Historic Landmark.. The façade
sculptures and the mosaics have been designed and produced by Studio
Tiffany showing different scenes from Jacques Marquette’s expedition
through the Great Lakes region, at the end of the 17th century.
Fully renovated in 2006, this building is now Holabird & Root’s head
office. This is obviously a return to basics.

Si bien des choses se sont modifiées depuis 1880, certaines valeurs
restent identiques, notamment pour ce qui concerne la démarche axée
sur les collaborations et non les individualismes, c’est-à-dire les efforts
conjugués de nombreux experts spécialisés interagissant comme un tout.
En examinant attentivement les multiples projets, se dégage une spécialisation dans les immeubles d’enseignement novateurs. Le bâtiment du
Waubonsee College Plano en est une preuve. Situé à Sugar Grove (Illinois),
il est conçu comme un campus satellite autonome. Les espaces répartis
sur deux étages et distribués en salles de classe et d’études, laboratoires,
etc., sont stratégiquement placés pour profiter de la vue sur le lac Plano.

Lauréat de plusieurs prix et détenteur du certificat LEED Platinum
le plus élevé en termes de respect de l’environnement, le Beloit College démontre une conception écologique : développement durable
du site, réduction significative de la consommation d'énergie et
d'eau, attention à l’atmosphère, aux matériaux et aux ressources
(matériaux de construction recyclés - toiture végétalisée), qualité
des environnements intérieurs, etc. Avec un atrium central multifonctionnel reliant deux bâtiments, sa position stratégique et ses
façades en verre offrent une intéressante connexion avec la rivière voisine. Dans un tout autre registre, la passerelle à haubans
construite pour les piétons à Davenport est devenue une attraction
touristique avec un point de vue unique sur le fleuve Mississippi,
tout en fonctionnant comme un moyen sûr de traverser la route. Son
intérieur intègre un éclairage en forme de kaléidoscope, composé
de 228 appareils à LED et de 8036 luminaires individuels.
Dirigée aujourd’hui par James Baird, Jeff Case, Greg Cook et Jim Miller,
entourés d’associés et de nombreux collaborateurs, Holabird & Root
reste, on le voit, à l’écoute de l’évolution des technologies, privilégiant
des méthodes innovantes et des nouveaux matériaux. « Notre processus
encourage les individus à élargir leurs connaissances par la recherche
afin de créer des solutions intelligentes et attrayantes. Si de nombreux
projets sont complexes, les solutions se veulent simples. Nous croyons
que la grande architecture ne peut exister que lorsque tous les éléments sont entièrement intégrés dans un design clair.»
Pour conclure, revenons un instant au Marquette Building, cité plus
haut. Considéré comme un exemple de l’Ecole de Chicago, le bâtiment
est l'un des premiers gratte-ciels à structure en acier. Il est construit
autour d'une cour centrale et comprend des éléments distincts qui lui
ont valu d’être considéré comme monument historique national. Les
sculptures de la façade et l'ensemble de mosaïques exécuté par le
studio de Tiffany honorent l’expédition de Jacques Marquette dans la
région des Grands lacs, à la fin du XVIIème siècle. Entièrement rénové en
2006, l’immeuble abrite désormais les bureaux d’Holabird & Root. Une
sorte de retour aux sources, bien évidemment.

Emerging from the La Défense urban landscape, the former AXA Tower
has been completely renovated and renamed “First” becoming with its
231m the number 1 skyscraper in France. It is the first one indeed to
receive the HQE certification. Four years work and € 300 millions were
needed to modernize the 155 m high tower erected in 1974. The objectives of the American KPF practice in charge of its important renovation
were to significantly improve the quality of the spaces, to ennoble the
building’s entrance and to create a new, strong architectural image.
Initially composed of three wings, the height of the original building
has been raised and the top of one of the wings has been trimmed
to create ten levels. If the architects have preserved 80% of the old
concrete structure, the whole building was reinforced. The design also
increases the indoor environmental quality by replacing opaque gable
walls by 40 000 square metres of glazed façade to bring natural daylight
into office spaces and to open views out to the city. The insulation, the
low emissivity glazing and all the automatically regulated equipments
helped to reduce the general energy consumption fivefold. Beyond its
architectural qualities, the First Tower shows exceptional ecological
performances, which will be a striking event.

Emergeant des tours de La Défense, l’ancienne tour Axa entièrement
rénovée et rebaptisée « First » devient, avec ses 231 mètres, le gratte-ciel
n° 1 de France. C’est en effet le premier de cette ampleur à recevoir la
certification HQE. Quatre ans de chantier et plus de 300 millions d'euros
ont été nécessaires pour faire peau neuve à l’ancienne tour de 155 m,
datant de 1974. Les objectifs de l’agence américaine KPF en charge de
sa profonde rénovation visaient à améliorer sensiblement la qualité des
espaces, l’entrée du bâtiment et l'accessibilité des espaces publics. Bref,
visaient à créer une nouvelle image architecturale forte. Initialement
constitué de trois ailes, l’immeuble d’origine a été surélevé et l’une des
ailes a été écrêtée pour créer un dégradé sur dix niveaux. Si les architectes on conservé 80% de l’ancienne structure en béton, l’ensemble a été
renforcé. Remplaçant les murs pignons opaques, 40 000 m2 de façades
vitrées apportent la lumière naturelle dans des espaces de bureaux et
ouvrent des vues sur la ville. L'isolation, les vitrages à faible émission
thermique et tous les équipements gérés par contrôle automatique ont
permis d’afficher une consommation en énergie cinq fois moins lourde
qu’auparavant. Au-delà de ses qualités architecturales, ce sont les performances écologiques exceptionnelles de la tour qui feront date.

With E-Brick and E-Board you will insulate and
give your exterior walls the perfect finish in one
go. Your home will consume less energy and at

of high-performance foam finished with brick
slips of our facing bricks (2 cm thickness). The
difference: E-Brick is made for the professionals

pavilions of the Serpentine Gallery built each
year since 2000. These summer pavilions
bear the signature of great architects from
Zaha Hadid to Jean Nouvel. This unique

The City of Helsinki is arranging an open two-stage
international architectural competition for the
design of a Central Library. The competition
looks for a contemporary library design. The aim
is to create a vibrant and functionally versatile
meeting place, as well as an energy-efficient and
architecturally significant building. The Central
Library will be located in the very centre of
Helsinki, the Töölönlahti [“Töölö Bay”] area, on city
block no. 2014 , a site significant in terms of both
the cityscape and symbolically.

timeless building.

The subject of this competition is the preliminary
design of the Architecture Pavilion. Approximate
dimensions of the Pavilion should be 3.6 x

product range. Location and other parameters
of the project are optional. It is required to
design interior and exterior lighting solutions.
