Labour participation and
representation in foreign owned
firms in Germany
Project
Subsidiaries of foreign owned enterprises make a major
contribution to the German economy. They account for
one fourth of total turnover of all companies in Germany
and employ around 3 million people. Currently, 10% of all
German employees work in foreign owned subsidiaries.
Despite the importance of foreign owned subsidiaries
for the German economy, there has been little systematic research on labour participation and representation in foreign owned firms in Germany. Thus, the aim
of this project is to provide a comprehensive and up-todate account of the structures and practices of labour
participation and representation in foreign owned firms
in Germany.

The Study
The study includes a large-scale representative telephone
survey of foreign owned firms in Germany across all
industries, countries-of-origin and firm sizes. This entails
an investigation into all important aspects of direct and
collective employee relations. The survey aims to provide
detailed and statistically robust insights into the German
system of labour participation and representation in
foreign owned firms in Germany.
The study also includes an in-depth investigation of
labour participation practices of foreign owned firms in
Germany. On the basis of 20 representatively selected case
studies, issues to be investigated include: What are the
specific problems that arise in this area? How are these
resolved and regulated? What strategies do the firm level
actors pursue?
Confidentiality
All responses and interviews will be treated strictly confidential. The results of the project will be published exclusively and strictly in anonymous form. No firm or interview partner will be named in any publications/reports,
which follow the analyses of the data we collect. We ensure
that no inferences as to individual firms and interview
partners can be made.
