Welcome Address
Dear Colleague,
The 25th European Congress of Pathology (ECP 2013) will
be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 31 August to 4 September
2013. On behalf of the European Society of Pathology and
the Portuguese Society of Pathology / Portuguese Division
of the International Academy of Pathology we would like to
invite you to join us in Lisbon.
The motto of the ECP 2013:
Prof. Manuel Sobrinho Simões
Pathology: A gate to the future
is symbolically represented by the Tower of Belém. The icon of the ECP 2013 is a monument close to the Congress Centre
that commemorates the voyage towards the unknown of the Portuguese navigators.
Pathology, in addition to its traditional clinical problem solving role, is entering uncharted waters – this notion is reflected
in the scientific programme that has been prepared mainly by the ESP Working Groups and encompasses 23 topics, four
Keynote lectures and a number of very special, “Special Sessions”.
The scientific activities will be centred upon Diagnosis, Prognosis and Prediction, having Personalized Pathology as the
ultimate goal.
Following the motto of the Congress, a particular attention has been paid to the Residents who will organize among other
scientific and social activities a Plenary Residents Seminar whose “Grande Finale” will take place at the closing events
of the Congress.
We are looking forward to welcoming you and spending a great time in Lisbon.

e Brief Description of ESP
The European Society of Pathology (ESP) was established
in 1963 in Brussels and is a leading force in European pathology and, as such, is pivotal to the future of the specialty in Europe and beyond. As a scientific society, the
ESP has, as its primary aim, the promotion of high quality diagnostic practice, applied and translational research
and under- and postgraduate education in the field of human pathology. This is achieved through its congresses, its
journal Virchows Archiv and various other activities. The
ESP interacts with national pathology societies in Europe
and has developed links with other EU bodies in close collaboration with UEMS (Union Européenne des Médecins
Spécialistes) and EAPCP (European Association of Pathol
ogy Chairs and Programme Directors).
The European School of Pathology under the auspices
of the ESP and with the support of 19 Working Groups
representing different fields of pathology is involved in
the organisation of courses to meet the needs of young
pathologists. The ESP also provides an infrastructure for
quality assurance projects in diagnostic molecular pathology, such as the ESP QA KRAS project for testing of colorectal cancer. The aim of the ESP is that its new permanent
headquarters in Brussels (capable of holding meetings for
up to forty people) will become the “hub” of European
pathology.

Call for Abstracts
e Submission of Abstracts
The Scientific Committee invites you to participate actively
in this conference which will be an extraordinary occasion
for the exchange of thoughts and experiences. We look
forward to receiving abstracts online for consideration and
inclusion in the scientific programme as oral or poster presentation.
The submitted abstracts should give a brief description of
the title and topic. All abstracts will be reviewed by members of the working groups and/or the Scientific Committee. The reviewers will judge the abstracts according to the
relevance to ESP, standard of English, objectivity of statement, description of what was done, suitability of methods
to aims, conclusions confirmed by objective results, ethics,
scientific value, potential clinical value, originality of work
and overall impression.
All accepted abstracts will be published in an abstract book
which is a supplement to Virchows Archiv, and online on
the congress website www.esp-congress.org.
Detailed instructions regarding the electronic submission
procedure can be found on the website.
The deadline for abstract submission is 3 April 2013.
e Guidelines for Submission
e Abstracts are to be submitted in English, the official language of the 25th European Congress of Pathology and
should not exceed 200 words and structured in the following specified subtitles: Objective, Methods, Results
and Conclusion.
e Case reports should also be structured as much as possible following the aforementioned subtitles. If not possible, the authors should upload the Abstracts using the
most appropriate subtitles (in the respective windows at
the website).
e The abstract submission constitutes a formal commitment by the author to present the corresponding presentation in the session and time slot assigned by the Scientific Committee.
e Changes in authorship should be communicated to the
Scientific Committee in order to ensure correct appearance in the printed programme.
e If the original presenting author is unable to present, one
of the co-authors should take over this responsibility.
e Registration to the Congress is compulsory to be able to
present the abstract and get it published in the abstract
book – and must be completed by 14 June 2013. If the
speaker fails to register and pay before 14 June 2013,
his / her abstract will be excluded from the scientific programme and publication in Virchows Archiv.
12
e If a delegate has registered upon the condition that his /
her abstract is accepted and the abstract is rejected, the
registration fee will be refunded. The acceptance of abstracts by the Scientific Committee does not imply any
financial assistance or fee reduction.
e Notification of acceptance or rejection by the Scientific
Committee will be mailed to the presenting author. Detailed information in which format the abstract is accepted (poster presentation, electronic poster or oral presentation), guidelines and recommendations for poster
presentation, oral presentation as well as time allotment,
date, hour, and venue will be sent in due time to registered presenting authors.
e Guidelines for Preparation of
Abstracts
Please choose a title that clearly indicates the content of
the contribution.
e Please avoid abbreviations in the title. Abbreviations may
be used in the text if they are defined when used first.
e The author’s name (full first name, family name) and
place of work (institution, city, country) should be indicated. Degrees, titles, street addresses and acknowledgements of support should be omitted, however.
To provide maximum information in the abstract please
e s tate the specific objective of the study
e s tate the methods used, if pertinent

e HOTELS IN Lisbon
Lisbon International Airport, 7 km from the city centre, has
daily flights to and from the major cities in Europe and the
world. The Portuguese airline TAP - Air Portugal as well as
major international airlines fly to and from Lisbon.
e Journey to Lisbon by road Arriving in Lisbon by road is a pleasant experience, as the
visitor can enjoy the beautiful countryside along the way.
The city has good road accesses and the most frequently
used routes are: the A1 motorway, the 25th April Bridge,
the new Vasco da Gama Bridge, and the CREL, the outer
ring-road for the Lisbon region.
e Travel to Lisbon by rail
Scores of national and international trains arrive in Lisbon
every day. In addition to Santa Apolónia terminal station,
you will find the Gare do Oriente, which opened in 1998
adjacent to the Parque das Nações. Both stations have direct bus or underground connections to the city centre.
e How to get from the city centre
to the convention centre
Lisbon has a very efficient public transport network that
covers the entire city in addition to the surrounding areas. Lisbon’s recently refurbished metro system, with 4
main lines all coming to the city centre, is clean, quick,
and efficient. While metro announcements are made only
in Portuguese, signs and ticketing machines are generally
bilingual in Portuguese and English. There is also an extensive network of buses, trams and funiculars in Lisbon
run by Carris. They are all worth a ride on, especially the
vintage trams, and the funiculars, which are an attraction
in themselves.
The Centro de Congressos de Lisboa is located in the heart
of Lisbon, in an area easily accessible by bus (lines 56, 727
– bus stop: Rua da Junqueira/Centro de Congressos, and
line 28 – bus stop: Hospital Egas Moniz/Av. Da Índia ), tram
(line 15 - stop: Rua da Junqueira/Centro de Congressos)
and taxi and about 15 minutes from the airport.

rooms in various hotels in different price categories near the
congress venue. The majority of these hotels are located in
the city centre. The Centro de Congressos de Lisboa can be
comfortably reached from all hotels either by foot or public transportation. Reservations will be possible online at

e SUNSET RAVE PARTY
Sunday, 1 Sept 2013
e 19:30 – 22:30
“Cavalariças” at Pestana Palace Hotel
The Sunset Rave Party has been organised by the residents
and is supported by Unicer and the Portuguese Society of
Pathology and aims to assemble residents and the young
pathologists to network and meet with their older colleagues.
The event will take part at the “Cavalariças” at Pestana
Palace Hotel. Located in one of the most tranquil areas of
Lisbon, the Hotel Pestana Palace was born from the restoration and refurbishment of the former Marquês de Valle
Flôr Palace, dated from the 19th century and classified as
a national monument. This majestic and attractive palace
was built by an entrepreneur who made his fortune with
successful agricultural endeavours in São Tomé and Principe. His connections to France influenced the design of the
building, with styles from the Luis XIV, Regency, Luis XV
and Luis XVI eras, creating a surprising historical setting.
The “Cavalariças” (coachman’s house), originally built in
the first decade of the 20th century, was intended to be
used as a coach-stable, and also to provide accommodation for the stable staff. The architects responsible for the
adaptation and refurbishment of the original building did
manage to retain a sufficient amount of the character of the
old building, to remind visitors of the carriages, horses and
saddler of yesteryear.
Let’s party, meet and network with colleagues from around
the world!

e CONGRESS CONCERT
Monday, 2 Sept 2013
São Carlos National Theatre
e 20:45 – 22:00
The São Carlos National Theatre is Lisbon’s Opera House.
It was opened on July 30, 1793 by Queen Maria I as a replacement for the Tejo Opera House in Comercio Square,
which was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The
theatre is located in the historical center of Lisbon, in the
Chiado district. It was built in only six months following
a design by Portuguese architect José da Costa e Silva,
with neoclassical and rococo elements. The exterior was
inspired by Milan’s La Scala, and the beautiful interior
with excellent acoustics resembles the San Carlo Theatre
in Naples, with five galleries and boxes adorned with neoclassical and rococo decorations, seating up to 1.148 people. The theatre was named after the Princess Charlotte of
Spain, who had come to Portugal in 1790 to marry the future King, Prince John. Carlos (Portuguese form of Charles)
is the masculine form of Charlotte. A Latin commemorative
inscription dedicates the theatre to the princess.
The first opera presented here, in 1793, was La Ballerina
Amante, by Domenico Cimarosa.
You will get to enjoy an exclusive ECP concert performed
by the renowed Coro Gulbenkian and conducted by Jorge
Matta, which you can book tickets for.
