With the economic reforms (1991), India has transformed itself on the global market. Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) between India and other countries are helping to boost fruits import to India as it lowers the trade barriers and creates more trade opportunities for foreign exporters. Even though India is one of the World’s largest fruit producing countries, there is high demand for imported fruits in the Indian market. According to the report of The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), India has imported fruits and nuts approximately worth US$ 500 million during the period of April 2011 to October 2011. Imported fruits are welcomed by Indian consumers as they are well Indien ist nach China die zweitgrößte und am schnellsten wachsende Volkswirtschaft der Welt. Import fruits’ basket Now a days, fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, pears, kiwifruit and plums are imported from various countries into India. The import fruit basket is diversifying which is evident with the arrival of other fruits such as strawberries, apricots, peaches, figs and so on. Surprisingly, some fruits like mangoes, litchi, limes, lemons, 68 Fruit World International 3/2012 Denn obwohl Indien einer der wichtigsten Produzenten für Früchte ist besteht eine große Nachfrage nach Importwaren. Laut einem Bericht des Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) hat Indien zwischen April und Oktober 2011 Früchte und Nüsse im Wert von nahezu 500 Mio. USD importiert. Destaca especialmente que a pe- melons and avocados are also imported in spite of being produced in the country itself. Amongst all, apples rank first in fruits import. Apples account for around 26 per cent of the total fruits imported. USA is the top exporter of apples (37%) followed by China (27%). Chile, New Zealand and Australia are the other major players in apple export to India. It is an interesting fact that in spite of the long distance and longer transit time, Chile is the third largest exporter of apples to India. Some wellknown brands of imported apples in Indian market are Red Delicious (USA), Washington (USA), Fuji (China) and ENZA (New Zealand). Rising demand Indian consumers are now showing interest to try new products. Generally, the fruits which are not grown in the country and not easily obtainable in the market are in high demand. Economic factors, geographical and demographic aspects and consumer behavior are the major factors for the increasing demand of imported fruits in India. The ever rising urban population is the major consumer of imported fruits and their products. It is a result of net higher und Importmengen bei Früchten und Gemüse in Zukunft. World International 3/2012 69 disposable income due to rapid industrialization and IT sector growth in urban area. Some other facts like changing food habits, awareness of healthy life style, increasing number of working women are linked to increasing demand for imported fresh fruits and their products. Selling season In India, the peak season for imported fruits is during the off season for domestic fruits. Generally imported fruits’ supply rises from January to June. For example, the peak season for imported apples is February–July and for imported oranges is January–March. The reason for lesser demand for imported fruits during the domestic harvest season is low prices of domestic fruits. Most of the importers avoid importing large quantities during such period. Major market centers Photo:Renuka Kholkute Major markets for imported fruits and their products in India are the metro cities such as Ahmedabad, Chennai, Cochin, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. There is also significant demand in other cities 70 Fruit World International 3/2012 in den Städten der Motor für das Nachfragewachstum nach Importwaren. Los productos importados acceden al país, India such as Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Nagpur, Vadodara and Vishakapatnam. Imported fruits arrive mostly at the ports of Mumbai, Chennai, Tuticorin and Visakhapatnam. From these ports they are distributed to other areas of the country. Processed fruit products Apart from fresh fruits, imported fruit products like juices and jams are also becoming popular in Indian market. Fruit juices are imported from China, Brazil, USA, UAE and Malaysia. Tang (USA) is the most famous juice brand in India. The major exporters of jams are Belgium, France, Australia, China, Turkey, and UK. To sum up, the rising Indian economy is expected to continue in coming decade. This will offer growing opportunities for marketing fresh fruits and its products. However, an entry into the Indian market has to be carefully planned. It should be a win-win situation for all stakeholders including foreign exporters, Indian importers, distributors, retailers and most importantly the Indian consumer. gen hauptsächlich über die Häfen von Mumbai, Chennai, Tuticorin und Visakhapatnam ins Land, wo sie auf dem Landweg in alle Absatzmärkte transportiert werden. principalmente por los puertos de Mumbai, Chennai, Tuticorin y Visakhapatnam, desde donde se transportan por carretera a todos los mercados.
