Maria Tzevelekou Research areas • • • • • • • Semantics Discourse Analysis Philosophy of Language Language and Cognition Language Development and Language Assessment Typology of Language Language Policy Maria Tzevelekou is a Research Director at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing“Athena” Research Center and a member of the Scientific Board. She was born in Athens and studied linguistics in Paris (Université de Paris VII and VIII). Dissertation title: Structuralisme et phénoménologie, 1979. (Under the direction of Nicolas Ruwet) • Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies de linguistique formelle (DEA), Université de Paris VII Laboratoire de linguistique formelle, 1981. Dissertation title : L’aspect en grec moderne. 1981 (under the direction of Antoine Culioli). • Thèse de doctorat en linguistique théorique et formelle, Université de Paris VIILaboratoire de linguistique formelle. Thesis title : Catégorisation lexicale et aspect: le système aspectuel du grec moderne, 1995. (under the direction of Antoine Culioli) As a researcher at ILSP she organized the semantic component (Tense, Aspect, Modality and Argument Structure) in several Research & Development European projects on Natural Language Processing: - EUROTRA Machine Translation project (1985-1992) - GRAAL (Grammar Resources for Advanced Application of Linguare - 1993-1995) - MLAP (Multilingual Application Program- 1993-1996) - LSGram (Large Scale Grammars for EC Languages - 1993-1996). In 1996 she initiated an experimental lab focusing on Language Development, Bilingualism, Bilingual Education and Language Policy. Since 1996 she has been actively involved in a large scale educational reform project aiming at the bilingual minority schools of Western 1 Thrace(Education of the Muslim Minority of Western Thrace), financed by the Ministry of Education and EU and supervised by the University of Athens. By drawing together linguists and information scientists, she supervised the development and the implementation of a large array of educational materials: Language Learning Curriculum for bilingual education and a number of CALL systems and textbooks for learning Greek as a second language: series of courses for learning Greek as a second language (CD-ROMs and books), Greek-Turkish dictionary of 6000 entries (multimedia system and book), Basic Grammar of Greek (book), Greek-Turkish-English dictionary of 7000 terms (multimedia system) for secondary education, a web based system for listening comprehension: xanthi.ilsp.gr/akoustikh) She also coordinated a large scale research project for Language Assessment in the minority bilingual schools of Western Thrace. In parallel she supervised the development, annotation and study of an extensive electronic corpus of Greek as a second language. The Language Development lab now works under her direction on three different projects: - An On Line Language Assessment System (OLLAS). (ILSP) Bilingual Development in Reception Classes for immigrant population. (Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki). Bilingual Development in the Muslim minority of Western Thrace (University of Athens). From 2010 till now she is a member of a team of experts appointed by the Ministry of Education for setting up the Language Syllabus and Curriculum for the compulsory education in Greece. Teaching 1995-2002: undergraduate courses on Theoretical Linguistics, Semantics and Language Acquisition at the University of Athens. 1998-2001: postgraduate courses on Natural Language Processing at the Ionian University 1998-2010: postgraduate courses on Formal Semantics at the University of Athens-National Technical University of Athens. Fellowships 2002-2003: Stanley J. Seeger Visiting Research Fellowship, Program in Hellenic Studies, Princeton University.
