And according to this very special artist, the “Concert for Violin” and “Orchestra No. 2” by Béla Bartók is a “monument just like the Empire State Building or the Golden Gate Bridge.” Whenever he plays the piece, his deep affection for the violin music of the twentieth century wreaks from every note. Gil Shaham works out all the facets, the twelve-tone rows, the traditional songs of the Hungarian farmers, the folklore of the “gipsy band”, even the traces of jazz. Or, as another raving review puts it, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Symphonieorchester Bayerischer Rundfunk manage to present Bartók with “thrilling dynamic effects by quietly backing the soloist, only to flare up the next moment with all its richness.” (Muenchner Merkur) As opposed to the second concert for violin by Bartók which was an instant success, it took Gustav Mahler’s first symphony some time to become popular among the audiences. Today, this monumental symphony, which is sometimes referred to as “Titan”, has found its place among the most popular and most impressive pieces played in concert halls across the globe. The young Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is easily one of the most promising conductors of his generation. Employing subtle sophistication as well as supreme intelligence, he leads the Symphonieorchester Bayerischer Rundfunk to an out-of-the-ordinary performance of Mahler’s music featuring collectively homogenous sound and outstanding soloists alike.
