Trade survey A big “YES” to strong brands What exactly do “brands” stand for and how many do retailers need to be attractive to their customers? “Lots!” is the unanimous answer from the retailers. Online traders are finding, however, that some manufacturers are limiting, if not banning distribution to online formats. The reasons why customers prefer branded prod ucts are multifarious. For parents the safety aspect tops the list, as does the desire for individuality„Marken stehen zunächst einmal für Qualität und Design“, stellt Astrid Hunstig fest. „Man muss viele Marken präsentieren. Products for adults and children are created by the Sabatiers with much attention to detail. “Brands are generally associated with quality and design,” concludes Astrid Hunstig. She owns the 300m² “Babyshop Hunstig” in Paderborn, Germany, as well as an online store, offering children’s outfitting products in both. “You have to offer a broad spectrum of brands. I hardly stock any no-name products. The majority of our clients are generally looking for high-quality goods. I do, of course, have customers working to tight budg ets but they still think labels are important.” Astrid Hunstig is only too aware of how some manufacturers offer their own products online whilst denying retailers the opportunity to do the same: “Some make a distinction between eBay, Amazon and the like, whereas others ban the online sale of their products across the board. In these instances, I ask myself whether I really need these items or whether these company’s prod ucts would be among the harder ones to sell in my store. If that’s the case, I won’t place an order with them. I would rather go without.” www.babyshop.de baby&junior 9|2014| 61 SHOP TALK Rebekka Weingart bietet in ihrem Online-Shop bis zu 70 % Markenware an. Rebekka Weingart agrees: “We equate branded goods with quality.” Weingart operates an online store for baby toys, care products and clothing as well as car seats and products for children’s bedrooms. Wellknown brands account for around 70% of her product range: “When manufacturers are yet to become properly established in the marketplace but are offering quality goods, we’re still quite happy to include them in our portfolio.” Weingart believes that brands are so important because consumers prefer to play it safe. Oktober! “Especially when it comes to their babies, parents are very careful. I don’t think brands are taken quite so seriously in any other sector. The run on brands is also fuelled by word of mouth. Mums talk to each other about the products they buy. It’s contagious!” Rebekka Weingart has also had her fair share of problems with manufacturers. “Some only want to prevent their products from appearing on eBay and the like whereas others don’t want to see their products on any other online platforms at all. That’s a real pity. We have to do without important brands as a result.” www.baby-weingart.de 62 | baby&junior 9| 2014 The customer is king! Retailers will be the first to agree. But is this really the case? What are retailers doing to provide their customers with the best possible advice and to make them feel they have definitely come to the right store? And what can high-street retailers do to stand their ground against growing competition from online stores? Read more in the next baby&junior survey from 21 October! And then there are the retailers who have created their own labels such as sisters Dominika and Stephanie Sabatier. Their brand is fittingly called “Schwesternliebe” or sisterly love. The eponymous online store features personalised products for adults and children such as T-shirts in the customer’s favourite colours and with their own prints, towels, hand-knitted goods, hats, bibs, fashion and accessories as well as sleeping bags, soother chains and much more. With much attention to detail, they create or adapt their products in their own workshop. “We just love creating things ourselves, which ultimately led us to develop our own brand,” says Dominika. The label has been going for around ten years now. “Over time we’ve evolved and developed,” reports Stephanie. “We go through the Stephanie und Dominika (links) Sabatier haben ein eigenes Label geschaffen: „Schwesternliebe“.
