Ed. 8 C-print 160x130 cm About the Artist It is quite difficult to associate this Swiss photographer’s self-portrait’s, still-lives, and landscape images with a certain school. Her photographs are incredibly narrative and individual, nevertheless maintaining a melancholic and romantic notion. Yet her pictures which are made convincing through a clear, formal colourful arrangement, leave room for a certain amount of humour. „I capture postures and gestures of animals, objects, or plants as an advance towards the world that surrounds me. My images move between inner landscapes and public space. They represent the moments during which the flow of thought stops and everything that occurs, becomes a game in which one does not only awe over the beauty of things, but marvels at its sheer existence.“ (Loan Nguyen) = = © HERRMANN & WAGNER | Koppenplatz 6 | 10115 Berlin | Fon +49-30-275949-25 | Fax -23 [email protected] | www.herrmannwagner.com= 2 Serie Mobile (2002-2004, in progress) (English Text follows) Im Morgennebel die kaum sichtbare Figur einer Frau. (Text: Raphaëlle Stopin, Nextlevel no.4, 2003) Fabricia, 2002. Ed. 8 C-print 160x130 cm Serie Mobile (2002-2004, in progress) In the morning mist, the barely visible figure of a woman. As if on a tight rope, she walks along the edges of a stone pool, one step at a time. Close by, the same figure appears, creating a hand shadow on the wall of a rough concrete building, or contemplating its reflection in the calm waters of a lake... Recollections of childhood games, moments when one discovers in bewilderment that we are actually part of this world. Human presence discretely seeps into the landscapes, softly slides in. A posture, a slight gesture... and a link is established. A shadow is cast, an object is picked up, a reflection is seen: the effect of a being on his surroundings always remains slight. The body may then make its imprint by proxy, by mere projection. Points of contact appear, bonds are woven, and these minimalist spaces become territories of introspection. Ed. 8 C-print 80x64 cm Human Landscapes The Swiss artist Loan Nguyen (*1977) photographs people, animals, objects, and above all nature. She creates pastel coloured spaces filled with light, that act as fragile beings in her images. Her photographs are convincing by way of a clear, formal arrangement. The harmonic compositions procure tranquillity and equilibrium. She works with colours, moods, and landscapes in a near impressionistic manner. The presence of people is of extreme importance in Nguyen’s images. She integrates them in a natural setting or accentuates them through architectonic forms. She portrays the individual as a part of one’s surroundings, in which one can remain in silence, be thoughtful, or continue with meaningless activities, as portrayed in the image „Village de montagne“. Here a woman stands with her back to the viewer before a massive wall and holds a small picture of mountains against it, to see if this absurd spot is the correct one for the picture. = = © HERRMANN & WAGNER | Koppenplatz 6 | 10115 Berlin | Fon +49-30-275949-25 | Fax -23 [email protected] | www.herrmannwagner.com= 5 Nguyen depicts herself as the people in her images, yet she is not concerned with the classical selfportrait. She utilizes her body as the connection between nature and culture. Through her gestures and poise, she reassess the portrayed landscapes and inconsequential locations receive special emotional qualities and an aesthetic memorability. In contrast to other contemporary female photographers such as the Finnish artists Aino Kannisto or Elina Brotherus, who also insert themselves in their images, Nguyen’s photographs are soft, still, modest and less of a documentation, and more of a window towards the condition of being. Since 1991 he has worked extensively with kinetic inflatable forms. The installations and sculptures by Max Streicher irritate yet amuse the viewer. They transform famous locations into fantasies and playgrounds. They particularly work with the surrounding space, in which they move according to their shape and size, thus changing the atmosphere. A dialogue is created with the outer space which, in each case places the sculpture in a new light. Interaction and approach are determining characteristics of Max Streicher’s art. = = © HERRMANN & WAGNER | Koppenplatz 6 | 10115 Berlin | Fon +49-30-275949-25 | Fax -23 [email protected] | www.herrmannwagner.com= 2 Blow, 2004 Nylon spinnaker, fans Each inflatable figure: 2 m tall Artist Statement Inflatables have had an important place in my work since 1991. In most of these sculptures and installations I have used industrial fans and simple valve mechanisms to animate sewn forms with lifelike gestures. My use of light and papery materials, like Tyvek (and more recently nylon spinnaker), has been significant to the character of their development, specifically to my focus on movement. The weightlessness of this material allows it to respond with surprising subtlety to the action of air within it. I use air to animate my work because it provides an effortless naturalism. It not only looks right, it feels right, recollecting our sensation of breath. Inflatables are the medium of enchantment, fantasy and optimism, but things do go wrong. Take the Hindenburg, for example. Macy’s Day Parade balloon characters occasionally crash into the crowd. In my work the distress behind the whimsy takes different forms. Scale is one factor. My giants, for example, are intended to overwhelm. In contrast to similar commercial counterparts, they are out of control. They appear to struggle, but why and to what end? However that sense of disruption is read also depends on what the individual viewer brings to the work. For some, gasping for breath, endlessly straining to rise, portray an image of playfulness, and even resurrection, while for others it is distinctly an image of torture. Both cases however involve physical empathy, a bodily recognition of the elemental – powerful and tenuous – forces that animate us all. Horses, 2003 Vinyl, electric fans Each horse 6x10.5x2.5 m Technique The artist’s sculptures are cut and sewn by hand from white parachute cloth. The figures emerge through an intricate process, that resembles the sewing of clothing. Motors hidden within the figures provide a consistent airflow and allow the figures to breathe and thus come into motion. A slight hum accompanies their movements. Similarly as with Harry Hauck, the flowing air can be understood as a life-bestowing spirit, herewith opening an anthropomorphic analysis of Streicher’s installations. His inflatable moveable sculptures, which he sews from white tyvek material, fulfill and create the respective room. They are simultaneously mysterious, frightening and whimsical – they seem to „breathe“ as just as people do. The objects spread out within the physical space and change it. Yet they also alter the space when they contract. In this simple, yet brilliant manner, Streicher’s sculptures generate an intimate and overwhelming interaction with their surroundings. The idea of the „spectacle“ is the focal point of Streicher’s accomplishments, who develops room-specific objects alongside individual objects. The observer should not engross himself in a static work, but should be swept alongside the transformation of the space. Streicher has already moved different locations and buildings worldwide with his inflatable sculptures in a new tug of war for the viewer.
