Eric is writing a series of letters to a woman he does not know. In his letters,
he purges his secret fantasies in a futile attempt to take control of his life.
Seda, the object of his desire, is a chronic writer of complaint letters.
Unwittingly, she begins to receive Eric's letters; as his communiqués intensify,
so do her insecurities and fears, manifesting themselves in a frenetic dream
sequences. Automatic combines humor with unbalance; live-action + stop-motion to
slip the viewer through reality and fantasy until the line is no longer
discernable. Automatic is based loosely on the Haruki Murakami story, the
sculpture by Ed and Nancy Keinholz, and bridal magazines from the 70s found in a
recessed ceiling in 1995.

présente des gens qui n’entretiennent plus ou peu de liens avec le temps,
l’espace et leurs corps. Ceux qui approche les conditions du « pure mind » :
utopie ultime du développement humain / technologie; rêve futuriste de vitesse
ou fantasme contemporain d’internautes. L’image d’un esprit pur, libéré de la
force de gravité terrestre, des contraintes de temps, de transport et surtout
des besoins primaux du corps humain. L’image d’un esprit connecté au réseau
global, éternellement en transit, porté par une masse de signes et
d’information.
Je ne cherche pas la vérité. Je cherche à pénétrer certains mondes de
simulation. Je capte les témoignages sans me soucier de la réalité ni des faits.
Je filme les objets, les accessoires, les animaux et les produits signifiants
qu’ils transportent avec eux. Tout est lumineux. Nous sommes dans de grands
espaces. Nous discutons de leurs quotidiens et d’avenir, des trucs de survie
dans les non-lieux et les non-temps dans lesquels ils se trouvent.

In the single-channel video Hybred, artist Christine Kirouac translates a
conversation with her mother into an exploration of the stereotypes and
subjectivities surrounding her Métis identity (Cree/Irish). Set in the kitchen
of their family home as Kirouac's mother prepares a pumpkin pie, history becomes
the site of debate as the daughter poses a series of questions related to her
adoption, amidst a series of jokes collected from the Internet. In the verbal
exchange, staples of small talk are turned into negotiations as artist and
mother struggle to find a place of mutual understanding. Across anecdotes,
memories, confrontations, and crude, politically incorrect jokes related to
Irish and Aboriginal stereotypes, the human side of a patchwork history is
uncovered as the pair navigate the disconnect between generations. Beneath the
banter, these women display contrasting approaches to the traditions of
storytelling and attitudes towards race as they reflect the difficulties of
finding a common language. In the process, as this duo moves between opposing
positions of humour and frustration, the legacy of ethnic expectations is
rescaled to the people they most affect.

anonymity of computer technology allows for the expression of our innermost
thoughts and desires, free of consequence. However, is this expression an
accurate depiction of who we really are? Or does it merely serve as a venue for
socially-unacceptable behaviour at times when we find ourselves lost?

of his teeth came back to bite him - metaphorically and literally! A careless
ritual of not brushing his teeth turns out to be a big problem when your teeth
are in a vindictive mood. As David chases each bloody tooth down the drain, the
teeth return to read him the riot act! And with that, the numerous failures in
his life: relationships, jobs, financial situations, are all examined with
horrifying readjustment. In the end, when little Kevin really gets a good look
at David's full smile, his lesson is learned with brutal clarity!
