Es kommt dabei nur auf die richtige Auswahl an. Leichte, fruchtbetonte Rotweine sind hier die unkomplizierteste Wahl, man denke an den gut gekühlt zu trinkenden Lambrusco mit seiner feinen Kohlensäure oder einen Valpolicella. Ein leichter Beaujolais aus der fruchtigen Rebsorte Gamay kommt ebenso in Betracht wie ein Vernatsch vom Kalterer See in Südtirol. Wenn es Abend wird und der Grill bereitsteht, dann sind auch stoffigere Rotweine gefragt – ein würziger Merlot, ein strukturierter Sangiovese oder re z e p t evorausgesetzt, das Tannin ist ein Lemberger, gut eingebunden oder zumindest im Hintergrund. Wilsdorf, der im Alter von zwölf zum Waisen wurde und im Internat aufwuchs, bewies nicht nur technischen wie wirtschaftlichen Weitblick, er war auch ein genialer Vermarkter seiner Uhren. 1926 entwickelte er die erste wasserdichte Uhr der Welt, die Rolex Oyster. Und um diese Uhr weltweit bekannt zu machen, nutzte er einen sportlichen Rekordversuch, der Schlagzeilen machen würde. Die junge Engländerin Mercedes Gleitze wollte am 7. Oktober 1927 als erste Frau den Ärmelkanal durchschwimmen. Und Wilsdorf verkündet davor groß, dass sie dabei eine Rolex Oyster am Handgelenk tragen würde. Die erste wasserdichte Uhr lief auch nach der Ärmelkanaldurchquerung auf die Sekunde genau. Um PR-mäßig sicherzugehen, schaltete Wilsdorf ein Inserat auf der ersten Seite der »Daily Mail«, das die Leistungen der jungen Schwimmerin und der Rolex bewarb. Dass der Versuch der Schwimmerin knapp vor der Küste scheiterte, wird in den Annalen heute kaum erwähnt. Es tut auch nichts zur Sache, die Rolex Oyster und Mercedes Gleitze sind zu Legenden geworden. Und dennoch – der Markenname Rolex polarisiert bis heute. Für manche ist eine Rolex ein Werk zeitloser, unaufdringlicher technischer Präzision. Für andere ist sie Ausdruck für maßlosen vordergründigen Geltungsdrang. Der satirische Satz »Geld spielt keine Rolex« charakterisiert diese Haltung treffend. Doch eine Rolex wurde und wird auch von Persönlichkeiten getragen, die für ein ganz anderes Image stehen. Das Bild von Che Guevara mit der Rolex am Armgelenk ist legendär. Auch Clint Eastwood würde wohl kaum eine Uhr tragen, die nicht zu einem »echten Mann« passt. Newman trug zwar 30 Jahre lang Rolex, aber nicht im Rennfahrerdrama »Winning« – und er war nie ein offizielles Werbetestimonial von Rolex. RivaBoote und Ferrari-Sportwagen sind Monumente der Designkunst, betörend in ihren Formen und berauschend in der Geschwindigkeit, Ikonen von erlesenstem Geschmack und luxuriösem Lebensstil. Obwohl die beiden Klassiker italienischer Lebensart so gut zusammenpassen, hatten ihre Schöpfer ganz unterschiedliche Intentionen bei der Entwicklung ihrer Kultobjekte. Enzo Ferrari wollte nur Rennautos bauen. Sportwagen für die Schönen und Reichen zu produzieren war ihm zeit seines Lebens ein G eschmackssichere Stars wie Sean Connery, Sophia Loren, Aristoteles onassis, Aga Khan und noch viele mehr aus der Kaste von reich & schön fegten mit ihren rivas über die Seen und Meere. Mit der neuen Aquariva by Gucci soll der Mythos wieder lebendig werden Gräuel, eine lästige Notwendigkeit, um seine Racing-Leidenschaft zu finanzieren. Carlo Riva verachtete den Rennsport. Als er die 1842 gegründete Werft von seinem Vater Serafino übernahm, erhöhte er die Preise für Rennboote auf das Doppelte – in der Hoffnung, diese Sparte nach und nach stilllegen und den Namen Riva als Synonym für die begehrtesten Luxusboote der Hautevolee etablieren zu können. Wegen seiner Ambition, eine industrielle Fertigung aufzuziehen, wurde er von den Bootsbauern der Riva-Werft verächtlich »Der Amerikaner« genannt. Als Carlo Riva 1949 im Alter von 27 Jahren den Familienbetrieb übernahm, setzte er seine Vision mit der Präzision eines Schweizer Uhrwerks um. Der Schlüssel dazu: ausgereifte Technik und die Ästhetik des italienischen Sportwagendesigns. Mit sechs PSstarken Modellen ging er in den Markt: Tritone und Aquarama verfügten über zwei 240 bis 350 PS starke Motoren, Sebino, Florida, Olympic und Ariston waren einmotorige Pleasure-Boats. Der optische Auftritt war nicht minder beeindruckend. Carlo Riva setzte üppige Chromapplikationen bei den Kühllufteinlässen und Bugverstärkungen ein und gab seinen Booten damit einen unverwechselbaren Look.
