Laying tips
In order to emphasize the natural beauty of Bergland-Parkett wood flooring, it is important to
follow some laying instructions when doing this work.
Bergland-Parkett parquet flooring is either equipped with a six fold quality sealing or an
oil/wax surface finish. All glues, lacquers and oils/waxes used for the manufacturing process
are free from toxic substances and thus, provide for a healthy indoor climate immediately
after the initial care.
Its unique 3-layer solid wood construction makes Bergland-Parkett parquet flooring suitable
both for floating and for glued installation of the parquet elements.
2-layer products are only designed for full area gluing. Full area gluing can be realized with
different products (PU adhesive, SIKA Bond T54, low-water dispersion of BONA H790,
powder adhesive Ardex or Uzin, Sika, etc.). As they tend to produce “bowl-like”
deformations, it is important not to use single or two-component solvent adhesives!
Nailing of Bergland-Parkett elements should only be performed on blind floors. In most
cases, installation is oriented towards the main light-source of a room (balcony door, window,
etc.), with the individual parquet elements to be installed parallel to the light falling in. In order
to influence room proportions and to obtain special visual effects, a different direction for
installing the floor elements may be chosen.
Bergland-Parkett parquet flooring is also a good choice in case of rehabilitation of old
housing – it may be fitted instead of PVC floor or carpets. For information about an
installation over an under-floor heating system, please refer to chapter 6 “Laying over underfloor heating systems”.
Important note: Prior to their installation, parquet elements have to be checked for
possible defects. Complaints can only be accepted before installation.
Important installation conditions:
The structure of the sub-floor is the basis for a proper installation of parquet elements –
whether in case of dry construction or on a screed layer. To protect against residual
moisture, lay out a polyethylene film (thickness 0.2 mm or 0,0078”) overlapping edges
roughly 15 cm. In case of residual moisture rates in the sub-floor exceeding our factory
specifications (cottage plank 1.8 per cent, cottage plank beech natural 1.5 per cent, 2-ply 2.0
per cent), the parquet flooring must not be installed. In ground-level rooms of cellarless
buildings, a moisture barrier in line with the Austrian standard (DIN standard) must be
observed.
Suitable sub-floors:
Cement screed, anhydrite screed, mastic asphalt, board floor, tiles and short pile carpets
without foam backing with an appropriate intermediate layer (because of their instability we
do not recommend velour carpets with foam backing for floating installation). For carpets,
neither the foam backing nor the carpet pile must not be too high as this is susceptible to
cause instability to the floating installed flooring or problems in the tongue and groove gluing.
Moreover, we recommend using an appropriate 0.2 mm (0,0078”) film or paper layer to cover
potential differences in the structure of the carpet pile.
Dry systems
As a matter of principle, the use of dry systems does not present any difficulty. In case of a
construction with insulating material and a blind floor (residual moisture content of the wood
max. 15 per cent) or covering (Perlite) with insulation plates and tongue and groove
chipboard elements (residual moisture content of the wood max. 13 per cent) or other
solutions, the following important points have to be taken into account:
Dryness, wood protection, load bearing capacity of the construction (springing or creaking),
sound insulation, diffusion and evenness of the substructure.
Screed substructure:
Because of its aqueous composition it is subject to different fitting criteria which have to be
checked for dryness, evenness and strength in line with the standard. If required, ask your
Bergland-Parkett dealer or our head office for our factory specifications (screed check list).

Floating installation
Preparatory measures:
Acclimatisation of Bergland-Parkett parquet flooring prior to the actual installation should not
be made. Nevertheless, temperature equalisation of the material to be installed in the room
(stored unopened 2-3 days) is necessary. Each Bergland-Parkett floor has its unique natural
character. Especially if you lay cottage planks we recommend to open some of the packages
and to determine the best appearance (combine heavy knotted elements with less knotted
ones and pay attention to colour differences).
Under-laying material:
As under layment for floating installation, we recommend using cork rolls, cork pads, fleece
material or special cardboard. These have excellent insulation properties and are particularly
suitable for evening out small irregularities in the sub-floor. When installing the first planks,
groove-side facing the wall, make sure that they are completely straight and right-angled.

The elements are installed by gluing tongue and groove. Glue the parquet elements both on
the long and the short side, applying the glue thoroughly in the groove flank (timber layer
bottom according to the drawing). Once the first row has hardened (glue setting), continue to
install the following rows of planks. After having applied the glue on the top of the groove, the
parquet elements are put together at their top side and, beginning from the opposite edge,
tapped together using an hammer and a tapping block of 0.4 m (15.7”) length.
Please note: Set the front side of the plank at an angle to the installed element (see pict.1)
and tap the plank from back to front to the area that is already installed. Thus, it is very
simple to put individual planks precisely together. Use the remaining piece from the previous
row as the first plank of the new row.
The front edge offset of two rows of planks next to each other must be at least 23.5 cm
(9.25”). For each metre width, retain an expansion gap of 1.5 to 2 mm (0,06” to 0,07”) width
(beech) to the wall. For areas of more than 8 m or 26’ in width, an appropriate expansion
gap has to be left. Mostly, the last row to the wall must be sawed to the correct width and
then, using an installation bar (available from specialised dealers), fitted in precisely. In order
to keep the distance to edge, a threshold is screwed tightly to the sub-floor. Please note that
in case of “continuous installation” into other rooms, an interstice that will be covered with a
transition profile is necessary. The profile includes an expansion space of 5 mm (0,19”).
Doorframes having the same thickness as the parquet floor need to be sawed with a slitting
saw enabling the floor to expand. Once the glue applied on the planks has hardened, aids
such as wedges, etc. can be removed. Then, cover the expansion space with suitable
Bergland skirtings. Keep a constant room climate of 20°C or 68°F (+/- 2°C or 4°F) and 50 to
60 per cent of atmospheric moisture.

Glue-fitting
General information:
As a matter of principle, glue-fitting of wood floorings on sub-floors such as screed or
chipboard is possible if the requirements postulated in the standard are adhered to. These
requirements apply in particular to the moisture content of the wood, the moisture and
adhesion of the sub-floor and the suitability of the used glue.
Due to the 2 or 3-layer construction of Bergland parquet flooring, swelling and shrinking
coefficients are much lower compared to solid wood. These reduced swelling and shrinking
coefficients have a positive influence on the glue-fitting as tensions within the glue joints are
reduced.
All wood species offered by Bergland-Parkett are suitable for being glued on sub-floors. As
regards heating screed, the glued installation of Bergland-Pakett parquet flooring is
prescribed by the manufacturer (use recommended glues), as on the one hand, thermal
conductivity is better than in case of floating installation and on the other hand, glued
installation helps to avoid to a large extent the emergence of undesired gaps between the
individual planks. For information about the installation over an under-floor heating system,
please refer to the instruction sheet “ Wood floorings over under-floor heating systems”.
Observe the following points prior to the glued installation of Bergland-Parkett wood flooring:
Sub-floor examination (standard)
When checking the sub-floor, take into account the following criteria:
- Major irregularities
- Sub-floor presenting gaps
- Sub-floor not dry enough
- Sub-floor surface too porous or unsmooth
- Dummy joints are thoroughly closed, as required
- Sub-floor surface soiled with oil, wax
- Incorrect height of the screed
- Unsuitable temperature of the sub-floor, air or room climate
Evenness:
As a matter of principle, the local guidelines specifying these requirements are sufficient.
Nevertheless, as a result of specific engineering techniques of Bergland-Parkett, the
following factory standards have to be adhered to:
1. Maximum height difference in an area of 1.2 m (3.9’) may not exceed 2 mm (0,078”).
In an area of 4 m (13’), 4 mm (0,157”) may not be exceeded.
2. Short (e.g. 50 cm or 1,6’ in length), wavy irregularities of 2-3 mm (0,078 - 0,11”) may
also lead to undesired cavities during the installation which in particular may cause
damages to the floor if laid over an under-floor heating system.

Strength:
Strength testing is performed by a special scratch test (“Gitterritz”)
Dryness:
Moisture measurement according to the CM method. Measuring points are to be marked on
a heating screed. A check list in line with the standard alone cannot ensure sufficient dryness
of the sub-floor. For drying heating screed, we recommend heating it once or twice (see
check list).
Anhydrite screed:
Anhydrite screed contains anhydrite binder (anhydrous plaster), sand and water.
Advantages:
- Fast and without formation of gaps (even in bigger surface areas)
- Self-levelling
- Always sand the sinter layer surface (K16)
- Anhydrite may be soften through water and loses its strength
- Yellowish-plaster white colour
- Be careful with dispersion adhesives
- Standard: residual moisture of 0,3 per cent or according to the screed manufacturer
specifications (standard)
Sub-floor - Preparatory measures
All sub-floor types have to be primed (except “Sika-Bond T54”) in order to establish a solid
adhesion between sub-floor and glue.
- The sub-floor must be dust-free and impurities (residues of cleaning agents or paint) must
be removed
- Cracks and gaps (except those arising from the construction) have to be thoroughly closed
Special instructions:
- In case of major irregularities in the cement screed, filler and primer application or sanding
of the screed is necessary.
- Pre-paint heating screed.
- Sand (K16), brush, clean and pre-paint anhydrite screeds.
- Remove mastic asphalt, double edge strips and loose sand. Bad mastic asphalt needs to
be pre-painted.
- Thickness of wooden chipboard must be sufficient in order to withstand the expected
stress.
- The use of other particle board floor types for taking-up the parquet flooring is subject to
specific conditions. Our factory specifications regarding the suitability have to be adhered to.

Glue-fitting instructions
1. During the installation, make sure that our factory specifications concerning the use of the
glue are respected and that the glue you use is suitable for the parquet flooring you intend to
install. In addition, the sub-floor must be prepared correctly.
2. When starting the installation, 2 – 3 rows of planks are tongue and groove glued according
to the usual laying specifications (offset, etc.). Following this, they are set into the adhesive
layer that has been prepared with an appropriate toothed spatula (toothing B3). Some floor
layers also apply the glue on the bottom surface of the parquet elements. When doing this,
make sure that this first unit consisting of several planks is well aligned to the installation
direction. While keeping enough space to the wall, fix this first unit of planks thoroughly to the
sub-floor.
3. In order to glue the parquet flooring correctly, the glue must be applied on the entire
surface of the planks and parquet elements. Additional tongue and groove gluing of the
planks is only necessary at the head joint area (of the planks) (not in case of SIKA BOND
T54).
4. Before you continue to install the parquet planks make sure that the glue applied on the
first unit of planks has completely hardened-out (over night). Otherwise, gap wedges placed
against the wall must prevent the planks (2-3 rows of planks) from shifting when the following
planks are joined together.
5. To grant a premium-quality installation to our customers, we recommend the use of SIKA
Bond T54 glue (see price list) that has undergone extensive Bergland-Parkett testing
procedures. It is imperative not to use single or two-component solvent adhesives, as they
are susceptible to develop “bowl-like” deformations!
6. After the glue-fitting we recommend to charge the installed parquet area in order to avoid
possible swelling pressure, edge tensions and badly glued areas (cavities) resulting from
this.
7. Wipe away any glue on the parquet surface immediately by using appropriate means.
8. Afterwards, assemble the dado rails and perform the Bergland-Parkett initial care.

Sika Bond T54
Sika Bond T54 is suitable for installing Bergland-Parkett parquet flooring fast and safe as
well as other tongue and groove solid wood and strip-parquet floorings.
SikaBond-T54 can be used without primer on cement screed, anhydrite screed, chipboards,
concrete and tiles ready to install.

especially for problematic species such as beech natural, grindable, anhydrous and silicon
free!
Glue-fitting:
Open the packing and apply SikaBond-T54 directly to the sub-floor with a toothed spatula
(TKB 18) and distribute it evenly. Working/installation time of Sika Bond T54 is about 1 hour.
Set the parquet elements thoroughly into the adhesive bed and tap on, thus ensuring that the
glue is applied evenly to the whole surface of the parquet bottom. Keep a distance of at least
10 mm (0.39”) to the wall. Wipe away fresh glue on the parquet top with a clean cloth and
Sika Remover 208 immediately. Hardened glue can only be removed mechanically!
Sub-floor preparation:
The ready to install covering phase must be reached, i.e. the sub-floor must be stable, level,
clean, dry and dust-free. Check preparation conditions according to VOB part C DIN 18 356
>>Parquet floor works<<. Follow the applicable regulations when doing this work. Room
temperature: 15° C to 35° C or 59 - 95°F, flooring temperature: at least 15°C or 45°F (20°C
or 68°F max. in case of heating screed).

Installation on a screed layer

Measurements have to be made at several points applying the Carbid method (= CM device).
In case of different measurement methods, perform comparative measurements in order to
relate the results to the values of the Carbid method measurements. If there are borderline
cases or doubts concerning the screed moisture content (p.ex. in ground-level rooms of
cellarless buildings or potential diffusion humidity) we recommend laying out a 0.2 mm
(0.0078”) PE film, overlapping edges at least 15 cm (5.9”). The rule of the thumb is to
schedule two weeks for drying-out a 1 cm (0.39”) thick screed layer (given a temperature of
some 18-20°C (64.4-68°F) and appropriate ventilation.
2. Check (standard) for strength and evenness

For checking the evenness, you can work with a ruler of 1.2 m or 3.9‘ in length and distance
blocks if there are borderline cases or doubts. The permitted irregularity is about 3 mm or
0.11”. The measuring instructions mentioned above do not apply to vertical building elements
of 20 cm (7.8”) in width.
Factory specifications:
In Austria, the ÖNORM standard mentioned above represents the legal basis for checking
the evenness of a screed layer. Nevertheless, we recommend using a balance rod to
perform this test and, if necessary to even out irregularities of more than +/- 2 mm or+/0,078” with filling material (ARDEX).
