Surveying Regional Architecture is a course
given in the American University of Beirut.
Its purpose is to survey and study the architecture of a given region. The summer
2010 instructors Naji Assi, Antoine Fishfish,
Sandra Kassab and Youssef Khoury chose
the village Khenshara, known for its skilled
builders.
The main course objective is to increase
the awareness and interest of students in
local and regional architecture, providing
them with systematic approaches for its
analysis and understanding. Building Archeology allows to appreciate the essence
of the nature of buildings and to study the
construction details in the context of the
whole. The 29 2nd year architecture students where divided into 9 groups, each
chose one or two houses. The survey started by studying the urban morphology of
the village: topography, parcels, buildings
and roads. The architectural survey substantiates urban observations and relates socioeconomical, spatial and technical knowledge
of the surveyed object.
The conclusions divide the periods and the
architectural – mostly superimposed – types into:
1) Agricultural society during the 19th century characterized by mainly mono-cellular
houses.
2) Flourished bourgeois community in the
late 19th and early 20th century due to the
influence of the world economy and the
booming silk industry, characterized by Beiruti houses.
3) Since the 1940s the gradual transformation of Khenshara into a summer village
and the increase of seasonal migration, characterized by mixing traditional and modern materials.
4) The ‘suburbanization’ of the village since
the 1970s with daily migration to Beirut.
The course was completed with an exhibition in the municipality where the students
could discuss the architectural heritage of
the village with the inhabitants.
