James E. Hoffmann: The World’s Most Complex Metallurgy Revisited The World’s Most Complex Metallurgy Revisited James E. Hoffmann In 1962 Dr Albert Phillips, then Director of ASARCO’s Research Laboratories in South Plainfield, New Jersey, presented the AIME Extractive Metallurgy Lecture “The World’s Most Complex Metallurgy (Copper, Lead and Zinc)”. This lecture provided a description of the treatment of electrolytic copper refinery slimes as practiced at that time. Using the slimes treatment technology described in that paper, as well that of other then contemporary slimes treatment facilities, a comparison will be made with present slimes treatment techniques to demonstrate the many advances that have occurred. Areas for discussion will include: slimes decopperizing, smelting techniques and total hydrometallurgical alternatives; selenium and tellurium capture recovery and conversion to elemental form, as well as changes in the recovery of high purity silver, gold and platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Keywords: Copper refinery electrolysis – Anode slime treatment – Process improvement – Pyrometallurgical process – Hydrometallurgical process – Precious metal recovery „Die komplexeste Metallurgie in der Welt“ aus heutiger Sicht Im Jahre 1962 stellte Dr. Albert Phillips, damals Leiter des ASARCO-Forschungslaboratoriums in South Plainfield, New Jersey, die AIME-Vorlesung über extraktive Verhüttung mit dem Titel „The World’s Most Complex Metallurgy (Copper, Lead and Zinc)“ vor. A synopsis of this is provided below. • Slimes were leached in dilute refinery electrolyte by air sparging at elevated temperature to dissolve their copper content. 6 • Antimony, arsenic, and bismuth were removed from the slimes by smelting, in a small reverberatory furnace, called a Doré Furnace, with an addition of soda ash to form a low melting point slag of these metal’s oxides. (At ASARCO, at that time, this was referred to as cupellation, which may have a somewhat different meaning to a fire assayer.) These slags were subsequently processed in their lead circuit to recover the significant amounts of precious metals which inevitably reported in them. • After slag removal, the melt was oxidized using air lancing and the addition of niter, sodium nitrate, and soda World of Metallurgy – ERZMETALL 61 (2008) No. 1 Francis Vanbellen et al.: “Extreme Makeover”: UPMR’s Hoboken Plant “Extreme Makeover”: UPMR’s Hoboken Plant Francis Vanbellen, Mathias Chintinne For technology-based companies, continuous improvement has become as natural as evolution itself. On top of this, innovative breakthroughs are necessary to keep a high performance in an ever more rapidly changing world. This paper describes the complete turn-around of Umicore’s Hoboken plant, from a complex Pb-Cu-Ni concentrate smelter and refiner, to the world’s largest recycling facility for precious metals. This turn-around was realised through a series of drastic improvements, which will be remembered at Umicore Precious Metals Refining as Hoboken’s “extreme makeover”. The makeover allowed for treatment of complex recycled materials from the world’s largest open-pit mine: the consumer world. The European environmental legislation is based on a life-cycle approach, assessing the sustainability of products through the cycle of production, use and recycling. The WEEE Directive, the Battery Directive are examples of the new legislation, setting out collection and recycling targets for valuable scattered waste streams. Based on a long tradition in complex non-ferrous smelting, UPMR masters the complexity of many precious metals containing waste streams. The new flow sheet has great flexibility in terms of physical aspect of the recycled streams; it is able to treat dry, fine, coarse, wet or lumpy materials, making it perfectly suited for recycling. Apart from these technical realisations, UPMR’s strategy is to sustain its business by being a reliable partner for its customers, socially responsible towards the community and caring for the environment. Anderson: Metallurgical Process Testing & Plant Optimization with Design of Experimentation Software Applied Metallurgical Process Testing and Plant Optimization with Design of Experimentation Software Corby G. Anderson Laboratory testing, interpretation and application of metallurgical technologies can be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid optimization of laboratory testing and operating plants with limited representative sample utilization. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimize several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing, this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimization projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application. Accordingly, several applied examples in flotation and hydrometallurgy will be outlined in this paper. This will include flotation testing of a copper gold ore, flotation testing of a copper, cobalt and gold ore, optimization of an industrial hydrometallurgical jarosite circuit and optimization of industrial nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching of a copper enargite concentrate. In addition, recent applications like hydrometallurgical pressure leaching and associated unit operations, such as precipitation, still remain more of 20 an art than a quantifiable science. This paper will elucidate the application of Stat-Ease Design Expert software to minimize required laboratory testing while rapidly optimizing multiple results and outcomes in a statistically valid manner. The Stat-Ease program is based on proven design of experiment fundamentals. In this paper, the real world application of this methodology for lab testing, plant optimization and process development will be elucidated. World of Metallurgy – ERZMETALL 61 (2008) No. 1 Funsho Ojebuoboh: Selenium and Tellurium from Copper Refinery Slimes and their Changing Applications Selenium and Tellurium from Copper Refinery Slimes and their Changing Applications Funsho Ojebuoboh Nearly all the selenium and tellurium traded and consumed commercially is derived from the copper industry in refinery slimes. Invariably, these minor metals which are byproducts of refined copper must be recovered because of their association with precious metals in the anode slimes. In their own right, selenium and tellurium winning is also justifiable because of the favorable economics, when properly conducted, and because of the interesting demand patterns. The first part of this paper examines the supply side of the metals within the framework of copper refinery data. A second part of the paper examines the applications of the metals. Introduction End-users of selenium and tellurium, concerned about an unusual rise in market prices and an apparent shortage, have reasonably queried the sources, process conditions, and near-term availability of the metals for their respective applications. The rapid escalation of the price of selenium in 2003 to 2005 compared to long-run price (Figure 1) and a lagging, but similar, escalation of the price of tellurium in 2004 and 2005 created anxiety amongst users and potential users for new applications. On the other hand, suppliers made up of primary copper producers, “captive processors,” and “toll processors” scrambled to meet increased demand and assuage end-user concerns. As evident from Figure 1, the history of the commercial trade of selenium and tellurium is marked by long periods of relative price stability and occasional periods of supply tightness and higher prices. It is against this framework of recent changes in the selenium and tellurium market that this paper examines the commercial source of the metals, World of Metallurgy – ERZMETALL 61 (2008) No. 1 200 Price Tellurium Price of of Tellurium Price Selenium Price of of Selenium 150 Price [US-$] 1 100 50 1915 1925 1935 1945 1955 1965 1975 1985 1955 2005 Fig. 1: Long run price in US-$ of selenium and tellurium [1] 33
