The tennis match
It's Saturday morning. Mrs Spencer comes into her daugher Sheia's room and says,
"Happy birthday, Sheila. Look what I have got for you here!"
Sheila opens her eyes and sees the letter in her mother's hand.
"What is it?"

"Well, open it."
"Oh Mum, three tickets for the big tennis match at Wimbledon today! Hurrah! Thank you, Mum,
thank you. But who are the other two tickets for?"
"Well, one is for your sister Wendy, and the other is for me because you can't go to Wimbledon
alone. Somebody must go with you because there are so many people at big matches like this
one."
Sheila is very happy, because she and Wendy Spencer are tennis fans. They like the English
tennis players, but their favourite player is Steffi Graf. This weekend, Steffi is playing against
Gabriela Sabatini at Wimbledon.

they are on their way to Wimbledon.
They are going by underground
because the streets are
always full on Saturdays. Mrs Spencer has got the tickets because she thinks her daughters aren't
careful enough. The trains are very crowded this morning because lots of people want to go
shopping; and lots of people are on their way to Wimbledon, too, of course.
They must change trains at Victoria Station. There are even more people here. But they needn't
hurry because it's still very early. The match starts in three hours.
Suddenly a little old lady walks up to Mrs Spencer and says,
"Oh, can you help me please? I'm in London for the first time and I don't know where I must go,
which train I must take to Shepherd's Bush _ I don't know what to do."

problem," says Mrs Spencer.
"First www.park-koerner.de
you must take the Circle Line
to Notting
Hill Gate.
That's five stations from here. You must get off the train and take the Central Line westbound.
The second station is Shepherd's Bush."
At this moment, the Spencers' train pulls into the station and stops. The two girls are very excited
now and they think their mother is still behind them, so they get into the train. But Mrs Spencer
is still talking to the little old lady.
"Thank you very much for your help," she says. "But I'm very tired. Can you help me with these
big suitcases? They're very heavy."

At this moment, the doors of the train close and the train leaves the station.
"Well, I don't know _ Where are my daughters?!? Where are they?" There are lots of people on
the platform, but Sheila and Wendy aren't there.
"Sorry, I must leave and look for my daughters now," Mrs Spencer says to the lady. "I've got their
tickets
in my pocket. Bye!"

"Where's Mum?" asks Sheila.
"I think she's still on the platform at Victoria Station," Wendy answers. "Oh dear, look, a ticket
inspector. I'm sure he wants to see our tickets."
"You're right, young lady. I hope you have got your tickets."
"Oh sir, you see, our mother has got them; we want to go to Wimbledon, but we lost her on the
platform at Victoria Station."
"Well, ladies, that isn't a good story.
Lots of people tell it to me every day.
I think you haven't got

any tickets. We must inform the police, I'm afraid."
Oh please, don't. Our mother HAS got the tickets. Why not get out at the next station and wait
for her there?
"No, that isn't a good idea," says the ticket inspector. "Your mother doesn't know that we are
there, and so she will miss us-if you tell me the truth! Let's go to Wimbledon; there's a big police
station there, and if your mother doesn't come we can go there."

"Thank goodness, Mum! Please show our tickets to the ticket inspector here. He doesn't believe
us."
"Well, I see now that you are telling the truth. But remember! You must always carry your tickets
in your pockets! Then things like these can't happen. Good bye."
