Juni 2011 Brochure Katalog Basel 2011 selection artfair Introduction / Einführung Welcome to selection artfair 5th anniversary. After the successful fairs in 2007, 2008 in Moscow, and 2009, 2010 in Basel, selection artfair is now established as an internationally recognized artfair. We are proud to announce the fifth edition with an exclusive selection of galleries during the 42th Art Basel - the most important week for contemporary art in the world. Ten well respected galleries present an exclusive selection of European, Russian and Asian Contemporary Art including painting, sculptures, photography and amazing installations in a customary and personalized atmosphere. Selection artfair lovers will see at a first glance that we have not only redesigned the fair architecture, but also feature a special program on a guest country. This year, we start our journey with Japan. Each participating gallery has selected at least one work by a Japanese artist out of their gallery program. Additionally, the visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite Japanese artist. This project is accompanied by a Japanese teahouse. Enjoy the complementary in Japanese tradition brewed tea to fresh you up. Presented in an ideal location at the Hall 33, selection artfair is situated only 350 meters from Art Basel. During fair hours a complimentary shuttle bus runs continuously between selection artfair and Art Basel. We invite you cordially to become part of this unrivalled liaison between familiar ambience and unique contemporary art and wish you an inspiring visit. In the exceptional setting of a more than 130 years old brewery castle at the confluence of Dreisam, Elz and Glotter works of classic modern and contemporary art find an unique surrounding. About 900m ² of exhibition space and a 850m ² large sculpture garden host the art. Changing exhibitions present artworks from the 20th and 21th Century out of the own collection as well as from international private and public collections. 35 kunsthalle messmer Riegel am Kaiserstuhl Grossherzog-Leopold-Platz 1 79359 Riegel – Germany Tel.: +49 (0) 7642 920 16 20 Fax: +49 (0) 7642 920 16 29 [email protected] www.messmerfoundation.com Opening hours Tu-Su 11.00 – 17.00 Current exhibitions: Kinetik – Kunst in Bewegung. However, the way of selection artfair is working with this concept is unique. This concept strictly belongs to the philosophy of selection - each gallery is to select form their artist program one Japanese artist with one representative work only. It is the gallery’s choice and thus supports the core idea of gallery work as such – to compile a shortlist with the most exclusive works for the gallery clients. Trust in the taste of your gallery. They made a tough pre-selection for you in order to separate the wheat from the chaff. Express your opinion through your vote and choose from the gallery choice your favourite artist. Your vote will select one artist for the Selection Award. To frame this project we realised a small teahouse in the heart of the fair. This is a calm place to relax and enjoy a complimentary tea and to have the impact of the Japanese art surrounding you. 39 Rin Terada Rathenow Paracelsusstrasse 5 14712 Rathenow – Germany Tel./Fax: +49 15 15 61 332 76 [email protected] http://zengallerydenberliner.com Rin Terada Rathenow Paracelsusstrasse 5 14712 Rathenow – Deutschland Tel./Fax: +49 15 15 61 332 76 [email protected] http://zengallerydenberliner.com Rin Terada Hope 2011 Gold leaf Oil on canvas 2 x 3m 41 The Radiation Project Danger! Radiation! by Gallery G-77 The Radiation Project is a joined project by the Israeli artist Galina Bleikh and the Russian artist Elena Serebryakova. It is the artists’ response to the tragic events in Japan which have been taking place since March 2011. Radiation intensifies the anxiety of the human beings as the human consciousness is equally preoccupied by both worlds – the real and the virtual. Today these two worlds are so closely integrated together that images of each world seem to penetrate each other. To demonstrate this interplay the artists install ready-made 3D characters into their artworks. Their postures and gestures are filled with symbols of reality. The added colour palette enhances the images with energy and emotion. The replication and recomposition of the same theme in varying colour schemes allow the actualization of the image making it difficult to say which is real and which is virtual. Radiation works in a similar way. It denies clear comprehension causing slow and gradual damage. Radiation is an invisible catastrophe – it cannot be sensed by our vital organs. The artwork enhances the blinding light that focuses on the eyes of the human being, and becomes a metaphor for the lack of comprehension of the disaster’ scale. Suddenly, the habitual environment becomes hostile and the emotional turmoil transposes the menacing apocalyptic palette onto reality. The Radiation Project acts as a warning to our civilizations where human beings fall victim to their own achievements. Galina Bleikh & Elena Serebryakova Danger!
