Modern Fables: Disney's /Chicken Little/ (2005).

This presentation is primarily intended for students in the Description and Narration
courses but is open to all - no registration necessary.
One of the defining characteristics of fables and fairy tales is their timelessness, but many
artists have not been able to resist the temptation to try and update them for modern
audiences. After viewing Chicken Little, we will discuss both the advantages and
disadvantages of the Disney approach.

Vom Wert und 'Nutzen' der Literatur. Oder: Zu welchem Ende studiert man
Literaturwissenschaft?

„Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing,“ so kann man
schon in Oscar Wilde’s Roman The Picture of Dorian Gray nachlesen. Selbst Wilde hätte
sich jedoch wohl kaum träumen lassen, wie sehr sein 1891 veröffentlichtes Diktum auf die
heutige Konsumgesellschaft zutrifft. Dinge ebenso wie Tätigkeiten (und Wissenschaften)
werden nach ihrem Nutzen und ihrer Verwert-barkeit beurteilt; und in solch einer
Bewertung kommt die Lektüre von Literatur schlecht weg. Warum etwas lesen, was doch
gar nicht zutrifft? Warum Zeit vergeuden für Fiktionen? Das bringt doch nichts. Oder doch?
In der Project Week können wir uns die Zeit nehmen, über unser Tun im Rahmen von
größeren Zusammenhängen nachzudenken und auch unbequeme Fragen wie die nach
dem Wert von Literatur – und des Studiums der Literaturwissenschaft! – zu stellen. Einige
mögliche Antworten auf diese Fragen werden in meinem kurzen Vortrag gegeben; danach
freue ich mich auf eine Diskussion und Ihre Thesen zum Wert von Literatur!
Einführung in die qualitative Datenanalyse mit Maxqda

Maxqda ist eine Software zur computergestützten qualitativen Analyse von Texten, die sich
in der Sprachwissenschaft sehr gut für die Arbeit mit größeren Textmengen eignet. Diese
Einführung stellt die Grundfunktionen des Programms vor und zeigt, wie es sich in der
Anglistik für qualitative Textanalysen einsetzen lässt. An einigen Beispielstexten werden
diese Grundfunktionen im Anschluss gemeinsam eingeübt, wobei auch die Eignung der
Software für eigene Projekte der Studierenden berücksichtigt wird. Für interessierte
Studierende wird in den drei auf die Reading Week folgenden Wochen jeweils dienstags
von 18:15 – 19:45 zudem eine vertiefende Übung angeboten, in der auch auf die eigenen
Projekte und Forschungsvorhaben (z.B. Zula oder Masterarbeit) der Teilnehmer/innen
eingegangen wird.
Interpreting Fantasy Literature

If you are familiar with Quidditch fields, the dark mines of Moria, the forests around Forks
and the narrow back alleys of Ankh-Morpok, and if you are interested in the cultural
backgrounds of vampires or werewolves and prepared to analyze your favorite Fantasy
texts on a more abstract level – join this seminar! We will discuss definitions and
characteristics of Fantasy as a mode, different theoretical approaches to reading Fantasy
texts, and historical changes in the manifestations of prototypical Fantasy figures such as
the vampire.

A Short Introduction to Gender and Queer Studies: Paris Is Burning (1990)

This session will offer an introduction to important concepts of gender and queer studies
based on Jennie Livingston’s famous documentary Paris Is Burning (1990, 80 min.) and
Judith Butler’s reading of the film in her article “Gender Is Burning: Questions of
Appropriation and Subversion” (1993). Shot in the ballroom community of 1980s New York,
the film gives an intimate insight into this vibrant and glittery scene of LGBTQ subculture,
which works to transgress and subvert the hegemonic order of gender, sexuality, race, and
class. In this session, we will first provide a short introduction and overview of the film’s
context and topics in the light of gender theories. Afterwards, we will see the film together,
which will be followed by discussion and analysis.

Introduction to Online Corpus Linguistics

Many students shy away from conducting their own empirical linguistic studies based on
corpora because they are afraid of having to master complex software and corpus tools.
However, corpus linguistics can be both easy and free of cost, when the right online
interfaces are used. This tutorial gives an introduction into major online corpus resources.
We will consider the BYU corpora in particular, but other tools and corpora will be
introduced as well. Students may bring their own laptops in order to follow the queries
shown. If you'd like to do so, make sure you have eduroam or the VPN-Client installed to
be able to access the internet in the Neue Uni (info: <http://www.urz.uni-heidelberg.de/
netz/laptop/wlan.html>). In addition, register for a free account at <http://view.byu.edu/
profile_new.asp>. It is, however, also possible to take part in the introduction without
bringing along a computer.

Auch wenn bei einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit inhaltliche und sprachliche Qualität klar im
Vordergrund stehen, wird häufig auch Wert auf eine konsistente formale Gestaltung
gelegt. In diesem Crash-Kurs geht es vor allem um folgende Grundfunktionen:
Wie formatiere ich eine Hausarbeit mit Word 2010? (Kopf- und Fußzeilen, Seitenzahlen,
automatisches Nummerieren von Kapiteln, Fußnoten etc.)
Wie arbeite ich effektiv mit Format- und Dokumentvorlagen?
Wie erstelle ich automatisch ein Inhaltsverzeichnis?
Wie integriere ich Tabellen und Grafiken?
Bitte bringen Sie nach Möglichkeit einen Laptop (auf dem natürlich Word 2010 oder 2007
installiert sein sollte) und gerne auch angefangene oder fertige Hausarbeiten zum Üben
mit.

Formatting and layouting complex linguistic texts

Chaucer as a Dialectologist? A Reading of the Reeve's Tale

Like no other piece from the Canterbury collection, the Reeve's Tale has long attracted the
attention of students of language and literature alike. Its particular interest for linguists lies
in the use of northern speech forms that Chaucer makes his Reeve use in telling the story
about two students from "fer in the north" and their encounter with a miller and his family
"at Trumpyngtoun, nat fer fro Cantebrigge."
Ranking among the earliest texts in English to offer a sustained employment of regional
language for literary purposes, the Reeve's Tale cannot be appreciated adequately without
a look at the surviving sources that document awareness of language varieties in
mediaeval Britain and provide insight into their evaluation at the time. This background
provided Chaucer with the opportunity to have one of his Canterbury pilgrims use regional
language forms; at the same time, a number of constraints on their use prevailed in view to
the audiences of the tale. A detailed analysis of the relevant passages in the tale will be
embedded in a discussion of issues of a more immediately literary nature such as the role
of the reeve as narrator and the genre of the fabliau.

What does it mean to have “red skin”? In Peaux-Rouges, Die Rothäute des Prinzen
Bonaparte a current exhibition of sepia portrait photography, we paradoxically do not see
any colors. But where does this designation, which we also know from other languages,
come from? There are some popular explanations around, but, in fact, the story of the
term is more complicated. Just as the story of these photographs: they were taken of “real”
Indians, but in France, where they traveled to present themselves to an interested Parisian
audience. Similar anthropological fairs existed throughout Europe and I would like to invite
you to join me in some reflections especially about the perspective of their native
protagonists.
We will meet in the Anglistische Seminar at 1 pm for a preliminary discussion and then

Citavi (als Campus-Lizenz für alle Studierende kostenlos erhältlich) erleichtert nicht nur die
Literaturverwaltung, sondern bietet auch interessante Optionen zur Wissensorganisation
und Aufgabenplanung, die sowohl beim Schreiben von wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten als
auch bei der Prüfungsvorbereitung äußerst hilfreich sein können. In dieser Kurzeinführung
werden die Grundfunktionen von Citavi vorgestellt, und zwar:
• Wie verwalte ich die Literatur für meine Hausarbeit/Zula/Bachelor-Arbeit/
Prüfungsvorbereitung effektiv? (Titel einspeisen, importieren, Literaturlisten
automatisch erstellen)
• Wie nutze ich die Wissensverwaltung in Citavi? (Zuweisen von Kategorien und
Schlagwörtern, Verwenden der Zitatoption)
• Möglichkeiten der Aufgabenplanung
• Verwendung/Anpassung von Zitationsstils
