DBC Pierre was born Peter Finlay in Reynella, Australia. He was brought up in
Mexico and the UK, and now lives in Ireland. The ‘DBC’ part of his nom-de-plume
stands for ‘Dirty But Clean’. Pierre was a nickname bestowed on him by childhood
friends after a cartoon character of that name.
He worked previously as a designer and an internationally published cartoonist, but is
now devoting himself to writing. His debut novel, Vernon God Little (2003) – a dark
satire set in the aftermath of a Texas high school massacre – was the winner of the 2003
Man Booker Prize for Fiction, to much acclaim and with a lot of controversy and hype.
The novel has been adapted for the stage and performed in London and Frankfurt. His
second novel, Ludmila's Broken English, was published in 2006 and his third, Lights
Out in Wonderland, in 2010.
