Emanuel Licha
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Montreal in 1971, Emanuel Licha is an artist and filmmaker.
Initially trained in geography at Université de Montreal and at
Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier where he earned a Master
degree after a research period at the Institut de recherche pour le
développement in Burkina Faso, he later studied visual arts at
Concordia University in Montreal (BFA). He also studied at the postdiploma level at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de
Lyon. He holds a PhD from the Centre for Research Architecture,
department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths, University of London.
He was a co-founder in 1999 of Le Grand Réservoir, one of the first
artist-run centres in Paris, based in a 17 th century water cistern at
the Hôpital du Kremlin-Bicêtre. From 1999 to 2005 he taught at the
École d’art de Gennevilliers, in the suburbs of Paris, and at the
École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne in Lorient from
2005 to 2007. Since 2007 he is Associate Professor in visual arts
and film production at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture
de Paris-La Villette. In 2015-16, he is Guest Professor at the École
des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’Université du Québec à
Montreal. In 2002 he obtained the Joseph S. Stauffer prize from the
Canada Council for the Arts. He was nominated for the Sobey Art
Award in 2011 and for the AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize in 2013.
His film projects have been awarded the Prize for best project at
the 2012 DOK Leipzig festival and the Panavision / Air France Prize
at FIDLab in Marseille in 2013.
He work has been exhibited internationally in various events of
distinction, in institutions such as Musée d’art contemporain de
Montreal ; NGBK, Berlin; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Parsons
The New School for Design, New York; University of South Florida
Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa; Israeli Center for Digital Art,
Holon; MACBA, Barcelona; Frac Franche-Comté, Besançon;
HartWare MedienKunstverein, Dortmund; Witte de With Center for
Contemporary Art, Rotterdam; Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck;
Tirana Biennial; Steirischer Herbst, Graz; Sarajevo Centre for
Contemporary Art; Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris. His
films have been shown in various international festivals, such as the
International Film Festival of Rotterdam, Indielisboa, Rencontres
Internationales au Centre Pompidou, Hamburg International Short
Film Festival. Hotel Machine, his first feature-length film will be
premiered in March 2016 and featured in a solo exhibition at the
Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal in 2017.
