Welcome to our village, never quite the same, nor completely changed… from the
founding of Le Rayol-Canadel Pramousquier over 60 years ago, the Commune winds
its way along the length of the D559 from the tip of Pramousquier to the Fenouillet,
crossing Canadel and on to Le Rayol where you can find our local shops. All around,
hotels, villas and guest houses are lost in luxurious natural surroundings ….an exceptional
setting and a haven of peace on the coast between Le Lavendou and Cavalaire, not far from
Toulon, Hyeres and the mythical St.Tropez. In a convivial, friendly atmosphere, our local
people welcome you to a seaside village that’s been well-protected to the present day. To the
south along the fractured coastline, punctuated by rocky promontories and small bays boasting
an exceptionally rich marine life, 5 beaches of fine sand invite you to “farniente”, or to dive into the
crystal clear water. To the north, the Maures mountains, a wild paradise for fell-walkers, magnificent
with its cork oaks, heather, eucalyptus and arbutus. From January, the 2nd stage of the “Route des Mimosas”
lights the Commune up with tumbling bunches of bright yellow flowers. A magic time when it’s good to
take it easy, or to visit the Domaine du Rayol with its Mediterranean gardens - centerpiece of the village
and open to visitors all year round where nature lovers will discover a wide range of Mediterranenan plants
and trees from similar climates across the world. A microclimate brings our village mild winters, but in any
season you’ll find relaxation, peace and quality of life. Yet, only a few minutes away, there’s a wealth of
activities to be found: scuba diving, wind-surfing, catamaran, yatching, sport fishing, tennis, golf, minigolf,
riding, outdoor adventure courses, botanical & zoological gardens…..
In brief, the ideal place to spend your vacation, just across from the Isles d’Or. On our coat-of-arms, you
can read “BENE ACCIPERE AD REVERTENDUM SEMPER” ... a good welcome always retains. It’s our aim and
in fact, our motto says it all: who comes here will always return one day ...

LE RAYOL-CANADEL SUR MER,
seaside village on the Corniche des Maures
At the heart of the coastal stretch of the Maures mountains, the
seaside village of Le Rayol-Canadel features spectacular, panoramic
views of the Islands of Hyeres. In a landscape punctuated by a
multitude of cuttings, where small streams pour downwards to
beaches sparkling with mica schist, a varied and highly colourful
flora generates and regenerates along with the changing seasons.
The tree-filled sloping landscapes - home to many traditional villas
- reach their highest point at the Tricolour flag, planted amongst
rocky outcrops 316m above the beach.
At the end of the 19th century, the almost deserted areas known as
Canadel (literally: a dell of bamboo canes) and Rayol (Lou Rayoul
– where many streams flow), were far from their rural community
centre in La Mole, linked only by a sinuous footpath, in poor repair,
winding over the Col du Canadel.
The southern French railways finally opened the coast up to the
first hints of tourism - initially of the winter kind, in Canadel. Before
the First World War, two Parisian architects, Albert Sélonier and
Albert Saint-Blancard, created a housing zone and built their own
respective villas, as well as a Grand Hotel. The Rolls Royce Company
followed, building 4 villas for their engineers and particularly, for
Henry Royce - who stayed several times between 1911 and 1931 with the intention of maintaining his good health.
These founding fathers of Canadel paved the way for artists,
writers, scientists and industrialists, mostly from Parisian society,
who all contributed to the rise of the seaside hamlet as a tourist
destination.
To commemorate the landing of allied troops with the “Commandos
d’ Afrique” on the night of August 15th, 1944, a memorial pillar lies
at the foot of what was previously the property of Henry Royce
and a small chapel was built where the railway station once stood.
Thirteen tombs also lie nearby to remind those who pass of these
historic events.
The early developers of Le Rayol had already launched “Hossegor”
- on the coast of the Landes - before turning their attention to their
new 300 hectare project here in the province of Var. Their goal was
to place walkers in a landscape in which they could participate
hence, the large monumental stairway in stone leading from
the beach upwards towards the “Patec” and originally, onwards
towards the tricolor flag. Punctuated by balconies featuring
elegant terracotta vases full of flowers and shrubs, the stairway is
amongst the features that gave its letters of noblesse to the seaside
village after the war.

station balnéaire de la Corniche des Maures
Inscrite au cœur de la partie littorale des montagnes des Maures, la
station balnéaire du Rayol-Canadel offre un large panorama sur la mer et
les îles d’Hyères.
De multiples ruisseaux creusent des vallons jusqu’aux plages brillantes de
mille particules de mica schiste et assurent une flore variée et changeante.
Le paysage boisé abrite de nombreuses villas essaimées sur les pentes des
collines dont le point le plus haut à 316 m d’altitude se repère grâce à un
drapeau tricolore planté sur les rochers.
A la fin du XIXème siècle les deux lieux-dits du Canadel et du Rayol
ol
désignaient la zone côtière quasiment déserte de la commune de La
Môle, bien éloignée du village rural à l’intérieur des terres. Seul unn
chemin fort sinueux et en très mauvais état, passant par le col du
Canadel, permettait l’accès à la mer. Il faut attendre 1889 et l’arrivée
de la Société des Chemins de Fer Sud-France pour désenclaver
cette côte et voir les prémices d’une vie touristique d’abord
hivernale au Canadel. Deux architectes parisiens Albert Sélonier
et Albert Saint-Blancard y créent un lotissement qu’ils inaugurent
pour leur propre usage avant la Première Guerre Mondiale en bâtissant
tisssant
leur villa réciproque et un Grand Hôtel. Soucieuse de protéger la santé
ntté de
son principal concepteur, la société Rolls & Royce Ltd construit
pour ses ingénieurs quatre villas dont une pour Henry Royce qui
l’utilisa plusieurs hivers de 1911 à 1931. Les fondateurs du Canadel
ouvrent la voie à des hommes de lettres, artistes, scientifiques,
industriels en majorité parisiens, qui contribuent à l’essor de la
villégiature de ce hameau varois.
Au pied de ce qui fut la propriété Royce, une stèle commémore lee
uit
débarquement des forces alliées et des commandos d’Afrique la nuit
ize
du 15 août 1944, ainsi qu’une chapelle édifiée en place de la gare. Treize
tombes dans la Nécropole au bord de la route rappellent l’histoire aux
passants.
Quant au Rayol, ses lotisseurs, après avoir lancé la station d’Hossegor sur la
côte landaise, déploient leurs projets sur 300 hectares avec la volonté de
faire participer le promeneur au paysage grâce à un large escalier de pierres
qui chemine de la plage au milieu des collines. Ponctué de belvédères, de
jarres fleuries et même de villas, c’est lui qui donne ses lettres de noblesse à la
nouvelle station balnéaire de l’après guerre.

Conservatoire du Littoral. Le paysagiste Gilles CLEMENT y a conçu le Jardin
des Méditerranées, une évocation des paysages de climat méditerranéen du
monde (Australie - Afrique du Sud - Californie - bassin méditerranéen…) mais
aussi de climats subtropicaux ou arides (Mexique…). Une véritable invitation au
voyage ! Sur place : pépinière, café, restaurant, librairie spécialisée et sentier
marin, concerts en été.
The Domaine du Rayol is a natural, protected green zone owned by the
Conservatoire du Littoral. The well-known landscape gardener Gilles
CLEMENT designed areas of “Mediterranean Gardens” within the domain that
evoke Mediterranean landscapes from across the world (Australia, Africa,
California, the Mediterranean basin …), and also from subtropical climates (
Mexico…) - all of which represents an invitation to travel far and wide on-thespot! Within the grounds of the domain you’ll also find: a plant nursery,

Parc zoologique et botanique, ce paradis tropical offre aux visiteurs une
incomparable collection d’oiseaux (perroquets, calaos, cacatoès,….) et de
primates rares (singes et lémuriens).
Ce conservatoire biologique s’étend sur 6 hectares de forêts et de jardins
plantés d’essences exotiques telles que palmiers, cactées, eucalyptus. Il
est classé « Jardin Remarquable » par le ministère de la culture et de la
communication.
Le Jardin Zoologique Tropical (ex Jardin d’Oiseaux Tropicaux) participe
activement à la reproduction et à la conservation d’espèces en voie de
disparition depuis plus de 20 ans.
Zoological and botanical garden - a tropical paradise with an incomparable
collection of birds (parrots, hornbills and cockatoos) and rare primates
(monkeys and lemurs).
This biological conservation area covers 6 hectares of forests and gardens
planted with exotic species such as palms, cacti and eucalyptus. It’s also classified

« Armes parlantes »
L’Azur formant fond rappelle le ciel et la mer
toujours bleue de notre littoral, les deux se
confondant à la ligne de l’horizon.
Le soleil dans sa gloire rayonnante indique le caractère subtropical
de notre station.
La barque à la voile latine a été prélevée sur l’écusson des
« commandos d’Afrique » et atteste que le RAYOL CANADEL a eu
le privilège d’être le premier lambeau de terre de Provence à être
libéré par les « Commandos d’Afrique », dans la nuit du 14 au 15 août
1944.
Le Chef cousu (bande verte du sommet de l’écusson) souligne
l’importance et la qualité de nos forêts couronnant la bande
littorale.
Les trois Ecureuils par leur grâce et leur dynamisme symbolisent
les trois agglomérations de la commune : Le RAYOL, Le CANADEL,
PRAMOUSQUIER.
La couronne murale qui surplombe le Blason fait attestation de
cité et rappelle la baronnie de la MÔLE, d’où le RAYOL-CANADEL
est issu, le 30 août 1949, par arrêté préfectoral érigeant la section
littorale de la MÔLE en commune distincte (elle est d’or, maçonnée
de sable).
Le blason est encadré :
- à dextre (à droite) d’un rameau de pin aux aiguilles de Sinople
(vert) et aux pommes de sable (noir) rappelant la forêt qui entoure
la commune ;
- à senestre (à gauche) d’un rameau de mimosa aux feuilles de Sinople
et aux fleurs d’or insistant sur la flore subtropicale acclimatée ici.
