Get ready for the greatest flash mob to grace Ottawa’s downtown core.
Canada Dance Festival (CDF) in partnership with Sylvain Émard Danse will showcase an excerpt of the
famous Le Grand Continental® choreography. The CDF is putting forth three flash mobs to promote the
upcoming festival June 9-14, 2014.
More than 60 dedicated non-professional dance volunteers who personify the festival as Ambassadors
of dance are looking forward to sharing their passion for the art form with the community of Ottawa.
The goal is to inspire and communicate with dance, entertain local residents and showcase their
continued love of dance and connection to their community. The energy of this many dancers together
is palpable, meanwhile the choreography is much more than a regular flash mob – this is not to be
missed.
There will be three opportunities to see the flash mob live in action:

Le Grand Continental ® was performed by 120 amateur dancers in the Ottawa region at the 2013 Canada
Dance Festival; this group of passionate dancers has a strong affinity with the choreography.

About Le Grant Continental®
The flagship event was in the 2013 Canada Dance Festival is a large-scale community dance project
created by Montreal-based choreographer Sylvain Émard, entitled Le Grand Continental®. This festive
dance piece that combines elements of line dancing with contemporary dance, included a multigenerational cast of 120 amateur volunteer dancers from the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Originally created in May 2009, Le Grand Continental® premiered during the Festival TransAmériques
(FTA). Co-produced by the FTA, this unique show included some sixty amateur dancers of varying ages
performing outdoors on Émery Street in Montréal. Invited back by popular demand, this contagious
spectacle was reprised for 125 performers under the title Le Très Grand Continental at FTA in June 2010
and again in May 2011 with Le Continental XL featuring a cast of 200. Le Grand Continental® is a concept
that travels well with recent versions performed in New York City, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon) and
Boston. The concept was even exported to Mexico City to become El Gran Continental, a joyous blend of
Latin social dances and contemporary dance

bien au-delà d’un simple flash mob – c’est un événement à ne pas manquer.

Le Grand Continental®
L’événement phare du FDC 2013 était Le Grand Continental®, un projet d’envergure du chorégraphe
montréalais Sylvain Émard. À cette occasion, ce spectacle festif, qui marie danse en ligne et danse
contemporaine, réunissait 120 danseurs amateurs de tous âges et de tous horizons de la région d’OttawaGatineau.
Créé en mai 2009 pour le Festival TransAmériques (FTA), Le Grand Continental® rassemblait une soixantaine
de danseurs amateurs sur la rue Émery, à Montréal. De retour à la demande générale, sa distribution
doublait de volume dans Le Très Grand Continental en 2010. Un an plus tard, toujours au FTA, Sylvain Émard
voyait encore plus grand, en signant Le Continental XL, cette fois, pour 200 interprètes non
professionnels. Le Grand Continental® est un concept qui voyage bien. En effet, des nouvelles éditions du
spectacle ont vu le jour à New York, à Philadelphie, à Portland (Oregon) et à Boston Il s’est même exporté
jusqu’à Mexico pour devenir El Gran Continental, une fusion de danses sociales latino-américaines et de
danse contemporaine.
Le Festival Danse Canada
Le FDC est une coproduction du Centre national des Arts du Canada. Depuis 1987, le FDC présente, fait
la promotion et célèbre l’excellence en danse canadienne. Sa mission est de susciter la passion de
stimuler la créativité et de sensibiliser la population à cette forme d’art.
Par définition, la danse contemporaine célèbre et explore les dernières tendances, et, par conséquent, le
festival a énormément évolué au fil des ans. Chaque année, en juin à Ottawa, le Festival témoigne de
notre histoire, de notre culture riche et variée, à travers la danse.
