The British and Irish theatrical and television markets in 2007 9/29/16 9:34:28 PM Tel: +33 (0)1 47 53 95 80 / Fax +33 (0)1 47 05 96 55 / www.unifrance.org SIRET 784359069 00043 / NAF 8421Z / TVA FR 03784359069 A successful year all round An expanding market After doubling its size between 1990 and 2000, the United Kingdom’s theatrical market stabilized in 2007 as one of Europe’s two leading markets along with France. Unlike in most of the major European markets, however, all market indicators in the United Kingdom showed an upward trend in 2007. Following two years of slightly declining movie attendance, 2007 saw a 3.7% rise, with a total of 162.4 million spectators registered. Box office revenues rose even more significantly, up 7% to €1,198.7 million. This was largely due to constantly increasing ticket prices, standing at €7.37 in 2007. This was €1.25 higher than in Germany, which has the second highest ticket price of all of the major EU member states. UK audiences are among the most enthusiastic moviegoers in Europe, with an average of 2.71 cinema visits per person annually, almost matching figures in France (2.77 films) and higher than those of Spain (2.6 films), Italy (1.8 films), and Germany (1.5 films). In spite of a slight increase in the number of movie theaters (up 2%) in this period, the UK lags behind other European countries. With 3,514 screens serving a population of 60 million, the UK counts just 58.5 screens per million people, one of the lowest figures in Europe (compared to 95 screens in Spain and 84.3 in France, where a similar population has access to 5,398 screens). This figure is partly attributable to a disparity between the number of theaters operating in the major cities and rural/regional locations, with the London area accounting for more than one quarter of the nation’s admissions. To compensate for this imbalance and to offer the more "disadvantaged" regional sites access to a greater variety of films, the UK Film Council launched an ambitious plan to equip theaters with digital facilities. The first installations began in 2006, and since the summer of 2007, all of the 240 screens involved in the Digital Screen Network program are operational. Exhibitors must now respect new agreements concerning the variety of cinema programming. Initial results of this project will be evaluated in 2008. A DVD market in slight decline The third largest international entertainment market after the USA and Japan, the UK is Europe’s largest DVD market, with an estimated value of €3.8 billion in 2007 (up 3.7% over 2006). The DVD market thus tripled box office revenues, with 89% of the market derived from sales and 11% derived from rentals. In 2007, 250 million DVDs were sold in the UK (75% films) and 98 million DVDs were rented (98% films). 86% of homes in the UK were equipped with DVD players and 30% of DVD rentals were made online (against 24% in 2006). A television industry more receptive to foreign-language productions In 2007, 5,858 French movie titles were broadcast on British and Irish television networks, with 35.4% of these aired on terrestrial channels, 25.6% on subscriber-only movie channels, and 56.4% on other channels. 2,182 films were Tel: +33 (0)1 47 53 95 80 / Fax +33 (0)1 47 05 96 55 / www.unifrance.org SIRET 784359069 00043 / NAF 8421Z / TVA FR 03784359069 broadcast on Britain’s five terrestrial channels (+8.5%). Of these, 63 titles (46 broadcast on Channel 4, 14 broadcast on BBC 1 and 2; 3 broadcast on Five, none on ITV), were shot in a foreign language, highlighting a spectacular hike of 54% compared to 2006! This figure represents 3% of the total number of films broadcast (against 2% in 2006), which attracted 0.2% of viewing audiences, as in 2006. The number of films broadcast on British and Irish television is currently five times higher than ten years ago, largely due to the greater number of pay-TV channels available. In 2007, 3.1 billion UK viewers watched a film on television (excluding pay-per-view viewings), 19 times higher than the number of spectators registered at movie theaters. Homegrown films take the spotlight The United Kingdom boasts a highly active local film production industry, although the distribution scale and success rate of films vary considerably from year to year, partly due to the scale of co-productions with the United States. After a lackluster year in 2006 in which national productions captured just 19% of the market, 2007 proved more successful, with a 28.5% market share, the highest score since the record-breaking year of 2005 (33%). This figure can be largely credited to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, a British co-production which raked in €72 million in the UK and hit the top of the charts. All up, 7 films produced or co-produced by the UK feature among the year’s top 20 films. The UK-produced titles were Mr. Bean’s Holiday, Hot Fuzz, and St. Trinian’s, while The Golden Compass, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Stardust were co-produced with the United States. As in 2006, 107 local films hit the screens in 2007, the highest number in the past 20 years. On the production front, the number of films produced in 2007 (slated for release in 2008) was slightly lower than in 2006. Nonetheless, 117 films were in production stage in 2007 (against 134 in 2006), the 4th highest number since 1990. This figure remains within the range of the previous six years (between 100 and 150 films produced) and is well above figures of the 1990s (between 50 and 100 films produced annually from 1996 to 2001, with less than 50 films produced annually from 1990 and 1995). Among these 117 films, 60 titles were UK productions (up 9%), with an average budget of €2.7 million. 29 titles were international co-productions (up 44%) and 28 titles were co-financed abroad (as in 2006). After a dramatic increase in film investment in 2006 (due to a handful of high budget films such as Harry Potter), spending on UK productions in 2007 fell back by 11.6% to €1.09 billion. The British and Irish film production sector is currently undergoing a period of change. After the expiry of the sales and lease back scheme (Section 42 and 48 of the Finance Act introduced in 1997 and extended until July 2005), the new market context has begun to take effect, with the former scheme that applied to all sectors replaced by a tax credit system specifically designed for the film industry implemented in January 2007. We will not be able to evaluate the Tel: +33 (0)1 47 53 95 80 / Fax +33 (0)1 47 05 96 55 / www.unifrance.org SIRET 784359069 00043 / NAF 8421Z / TVA FR 03784359069 effectiveness of this new system until 2008, once the various stages of films’ development, financing, production, postproduction, and commercial release have been completed. French films continue to gain ground French films have traditionally struggled to make their mark in this market in which non-British foreign-language films tend to be relegated to the category of “specialized films.” Despite the fact that between 30 and 40 French titles hit British and Irish screens each year, French films have only vary rarely gained a market share above 1%. Admissions hover around the 500,000 spectators mark, reaching 1.5 million in a good year. Despite this bleak market scenario, French films have achieved considerable progress in the past three years. 2007 was an exceptionally good year, with 44 French titles released and ticket sales reaching €21 million. Close to 3 million* admissions were registered and French films’ market share jumped to a record high of 1.8%. For the third consecutive year, French films’ market share broke the 1% threshold, even coming close to 2%. French majority productions dominated these results, accounting for almost 87% of all admissions to French fare. A number of films deserve particular credit, such as Luc Besson’s Arthur et les Minimoys (Arthur and the Invisibles), distributed by Alliance/Momentum. Although benefiting from being shot in English and its international cast, this film nonetheless achieved impressive results, attracting 1.1 million spectators. Also in the English-language category were fine performances by Two Days in Paris by Julie Delpy (140,000 admissions, released by The Works) and La Science des reves (The Science of Sleep) by Michel Gondry (125,000 admissions, released by Warner Bros.). The big surprise of the year came from French-language films, with UK distributors turning up trumps with their choice of titles. Icon Films Entertainment showed their support for Edith Piaf with an ambitious release of Olivier Dahan’s La Mome (La Vie en Rose). This film pulled in around 325,000 spectators, an excellent achievement for a foreign-language production. The fledgling distribution outfit Revolver threw its weight behind a film of a different genre, releasing the French-style action film Ne le dis a personne (Tell No One) by Guillaume Canet with excellent results (250,000 admissions). Spurred on by these success stories, these distributors went on to acquire other French titles, including Hors de prix (Priceless) and Les Femmes de l’ombre (Female Agents). Fine results were also earned by Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend) by Patrice Leconte (80,000 admissions, released by Optimum) and Moliere by Laurent Tirard (75,000 admissions, released by Pathe UK). Despite the difficulties of this market for non-English language films, French cinema benefits from strong support from longstanding relationships with a number of distributors, who have recently been joined by several dynamic newcomers who have brought new impetus to the distribution of French films in the UK. Only the future will tell what is in store for the new Artificial Eye, now associated with the Curzon cinemas, the central keystone for independent film distribution in the United Kingdom. Under the control of StudioCanal since 2006, Optimum has now stamped itself as the number 2 distributor of French films in the UK, with 7 titles released in 2007. The other French operator in this territory, Pathe UK showed limited support for French fare, releasing just 3 titles in this period. Among the traditional supporters of French films, Tartan Films shows waning enthusiasm, while Alliance/Momentum restricted its support to the more commercial productions. 2007 was also marked by the arrival on the scene and the return of a host of distributors who had either rarely distributed French films or had backed off in recent years. These include Icon and Revolver (mentioned earlier) as well as The Works, Metrodome, and ICA. Finally, a number of highly specialized distributors, such as Soda Pictures, Peccadillo, and Dogwoof, showed their motivation for developing an audience for the less accessible French titles. *Estimations based on box office receipts and the official average ticket price.
