SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 - OT-Med
> SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 Université d’Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse & Aix-Marseille Université May 13th to May 18th 2013 Practical information Where and when does it start? The summer school will start on Monday May 13th at 9 a.m. at the University of Avignon (room OE18). Please look – look at appendix 1 at the end of the pdf to find details on how to get there http://www.univ-avignon.fr/fr/informations-utiles/plans-dacces.html Monday night, you will stay at the youth hostel, Pop’Hostel in the city center of Avignon (just in case you come in advance and want to stay in the same place): http://www.pophostel.fr/ If you wish to come in advance, here is a website to visit: http://www.avignon-tourisme.com/home1-2.html How can you get there? To reach Avignon, there are 2 main possibilities: 1) land in Paris and catch a train from Paris to Avignon (duration: 2h40, between 50 and 120 euro) http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ 2) land in Marseille (MRS), the closest international airport* and catch a train from Vitrolles Aéroport to Avignon (duration: 1h, 16,70 euro). http://www.marseille.aeroport.fr/ and http://www.marseille-airport.com/access-car-parks/access/by-train-or-by-bus There are some low-cost flights landing in Marseille: http://www.mp2.aeroport.fr/ *On maps, you will see that there is an airport near Avignon (Caumont), but it is small and only national therefore very expensive to directly land there. > SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 How can you go back home? The summer school will end either on Friday May 17th if you decide not to go to the Frioul Island or on Saturday May 18th by mid-afternoon if you decide to go to the Frioul Island. Either way, it will end in Marseille. To leave, you can either: 1) go back to Paris by train (duration: 3h, between 50 and 120 euro) - http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ 2) go back to Avignon by train (duration: 1h, between 20 euro) - http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ 3) leave from Marseille (MRS), which can be reached by bus (duration: 25 min., 8 euro). http://www.marseille.aeroport.fr/acces-et-parking/acces/navettes-bus/marseille If you wish to extend your stay, here is a website to visit: http://www.marseille-tourisme.com/en/ Climate and Clothes The weather in southern France in May is generally sunny and warm, with an average max. temperature around 23°C (day) and an average min. temperature around 13°C (night). It can still rain… (May last year, it rained quite a bit on the 20th and nearly nothing the rest of the month: http://meteociel.fr/climatologie/villes.php?code=7650&mois=5&annee=2012). For the field trips, do not forget to bring “field trip clothes” including good shoes, a hat or a cap and sunscreen. City of Avignon (photo by Renaud Jaunatre) > SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 Program Monday, May 13 Morning 8h30 – 9h Welcome participants at IMBE / Université d’Avignon – Sainte Marthe (ROOM OE18, North Building of the city center campus – look at appendix 1 at the end of the pdf to find details) 9h Talk by Elise Buisson (Univ. Avignon, UMR CNRS IRD - IMBE) Title: Introduction to the summer school, to restoration and to Mediterranean ecosystems. 10h Talk by Bruno Fady (INRA UMR IMBE) Title: Genetic diversity of Mediterranean forest ecosystems and restoration 11h Talk by José Rey Benayas (Universidad de Alcalá, Spain). Title: Restoration in Mediterranean agricultural landscapes for wildlife enhancement 12h Lunch at the University of Avignon 13h Leave for Mont Ventoux Site visit - afforestation on Mont Ventoux, dating from the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th: soil erosion was successfully controlled and forests devastated by overexploitation and overgrazing were successfully restored. This restoration is moving into a second, dynamic phase as, for several decades now, Beech (Fagus silvatica) and Silver fir (Abies alba), which had remained within residual stands, are recolonizing the planted pine (Pinus nigra, P. sylvestris, P. uncinata) and other conifer (Picea abies, Larix decidua) stands. The new, mostly heterogeneous and mixed stands which result from this "maturation process" form a complex landscape mosaic that opens interesting prospects for the sustainability of forest trees and their associated biodiversity. The excursion will focus on what past forest restoration has achieved and the current challenges faced by forest management (IMBE, INRA d’Avignon, ONF). > SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 Evening - Stay in Avignon, http://www.avignon.fr/en/ - Free time to wander around and have diner (diner not included) Night at - Pop’Hostel (next day breakfast included). - http://www.pophostel.fr/ Mont Ventoux (photo by Renaud Jaunatre) > SER Summer School RESTORATION ECOLOGY 2013 Tuesday, May 14 7h – 8h Breakfast at Pop’Hostel (included) 8h30 Bus leaves from Parking Ferruce to go to Tour du Valat (Le Sambuc) 10h00 – 11h30 Talks by Patrick Grillas (Tour du Valat) on the characteristics of Mediterranean wetlands, conservation and restoration 11h30 – 13h Lunch at Tour du Valat 13h – 15h-16h Site visit – Salt ponds of Camargue (Salin-de-Giraud), future restoration project.
