Students will use information learned from Math Chapter 16 to research and report their findings using graphs, charts, mean, median, and mode. Students will be taught Excel to make charts and graphs. Students will display their data on poster boards to the class. Step 1: Develop a question you are interested in asking and learning about. Types of questions can include: a) Asks a preference for a variety of consumer goods. For example: Which candy bar would you prefer? Snickers, Baby Ruth, Three Musketeer, Hershey Bar, or Butterfingers? b) Information Gathering. For example: Which brand of cell phone is most popular? What is the most popular brand of tennis shoe? c) You must have 5 choices to choose from. Step 2: You must ask 40 students (20 boys, 20 girls) from each grade level (4th, 5th, and 6th) for a total of 120 responses. Step 3: Determine the best way to collect your data. Are you going to use a tally chart, a questionnaire for students to fill out, etc. Please show Mr. Smith your data collection plan BEFORE collecting your data. Step 4: Organize your data in a table or chart (Frequency Table) Step 5: Find the mean, median, and mode for each choice (mean for Snickers, mean for Baby Ruth, etc). To do this, take the scores for each grade level, add them together, and then divide by 3. Step 6: Represent your data using a bar graph. Step 7: Represent your data using a circle graph/pie chart for each grade level. Be sure to accurately represent percentages on your circle graph. This means you have to calculate percentages before you begin making your graph. (To calculate percentages – divide the number of people choosing each candy bar by 40, and then multiply by 100. Round percentages to the nearest whole number) Step 8: Write one paragraph explaining how your data could be used by a company that is promoting the products you researched. Your explanation must be 5 – 8 sentences in length. Step 9: Create your poster. Your poster should present your data in an eyecatching manner. Your work must be neat, clear, colorful, without spelling or grammar mistakes, and fun to look at! Please include information from Steps 3 – 9 on your poster. Extra Credit Are there gender differences? Did girls like one candy bar more than the boys? Write one paragraph explaining if there are gender differences and use your data to support your conclusion. Have fun and be creative! Sample for Finding Mean, Median, Mode Choice Selected Mean Median Mode Snickers Baby Ruth Three Musketeers Hershey Bar Butterfinger To figure the mean, add all responses for Snickers from each grade level, then divide by 3. Do this for each type of candy bar. To figure the median, find the total number of each candy bar for each grade level. Example for Snickers - 4th = 23, 5th = 17, 6th = 22. Write them in order, least to greatest. 17, 22, 23. The median for Snickers is 22. To figure the mode, use the totals you got when figuring the mean and the mode. (You should have 15 numbers). List totals in order, least to greatest. Find the number that occurred most often.
