Letter from the President
In this Network 39 you will find the rich overview of the sessions that will take place
during the 31st ISSR Conference which is to be held in Aix-en-Provence (France) from
Thursday the 30th of June to Sunday the 3rd of July 2011. The theme of this 31st Conference:
Religion and Economy in a Global World has appealed many of you because, beside the
other two plenary sessions dealing with it, there will be numerous Thematic Sessions
completing the approaches. Actually, among the about forty Thematic Sessions proposed, you
will find a few dealing with the theme Religion and Economy under different angles: that of
globalization, of the ultra-liberal logic or that of the sustainable economy, in particular
cultural areas (Africa, Latin America, East Asia, Central and East Europe) or in specific
religious environments (Afro-american religions, Christianity, minority communities). And
we must not forget the Thematic Sessions dedicated to the study of the specific themes of the
relations in Religion and Economy as the religious tourism, the use of marketing techniques
by the religious organizations or the interferences between religions, social and health
activities and economy. To the richness and variety of the Thematic Sessions we must add the
contributions concerning this theme by some of the eight Working Groups. What strikes me in
all this, is that our 31st Conference will not be limited to dealing with the traditional problems
of the relations between economy and religion, but it will also address the theme in a
relatively new way, by linking it to questions connected with the transnationalization of the
religious, to migration and to social inequalities, to consumption practices and to the religious
criticism about economy. If I am not mistaken, maybe this plan lacks studies addressing the
relationship between religion and internet, and the economy of the different religious
universes (the Christian confessions, the Muslim religious universes, the Buddhist
traditions…), but that will certainly be taken in due consideration in various presentations.
Anyway it is very lucky that through this theme again the ISSR addresses an academic subject
that is so topical and that arouses great social interest. This, hopefully, should enrich the
fellow economists and the various social actors present in the audience of this conference.
Of course, the success of the theme does not prevent our 31st Conference from
counting various sessions or working groups dedicated to some epistemological and
methodological questions or even to totally different study areas (the sociology of prayer, the
religion of the Armenians, religion and biopolitics, the Evangelicals in South-East Asia, the
Pentecostals...). This important palette is still enriched with two New Researchers Forum, five
Author meets critics sessions and a list of Miscellaneous sessions. In this way the ISSR
Conference continues to fulfil its role as a forum of exchanges and debates among the
sociologists of religion coming from different continents.
I wish to welcome the coming out of the Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion
published by Brill and edited by our Italian colleagues Enzo Pace, Luigi Berzano and
Giuseppe Giordan and I wish good luck to this new annual review. The first Volume of 2010,
edited by Giuseppe Giordan, is dedicated to the theme « Youth and Religion ». Let me also
mention the recent coming out in France of two Dictionaries concerning our field: the
Dictionnaire des faits religieux (Régine Azria et Danièle Hervieu-Léger éds, Presses
Universitaires de France, 2010) and the Dictionnaire du droit des religions (Francis Messner
éd., CNRS éditions, 2011).
You will be welcomed in Aix-en-Provence and you will certainly work there in
excellent conditions. This is what I could see with Giuseppe Giordan and Jean-Pierre

Hiernaux, during our visit to Aix-en-Provence last December, which allowed us to meet the
representatives of the Local Committee and to tour the premises and the two sites where the
Conference will be held. I would like to thank Professor Raphaël Liogier and his team for the
strong mobilization of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques who strive to ensure that this
Conference takes place in the best conditions. Here is an example: each work room available
to us is connected to the Internet and equipped for audio and visual presentations. As to the
tourist programme proposed, it will combine the useful and the pleasurable and it will enable
those who wish so, to discover the charm of a town and the attractions of a region that has
inspired so many painters!
I conclude by telling you that Jean-Pierre Hiernaux, our treasurer who has worked
extensively to manage the finances of the ISSR wisely and responsibly, has decided to step
down on December 31, 2010. Giuseppe Giordan has taken the necessary steps to ensure the
transition and continuity of the service to all the members of our society. I will take the
opportunity to express our gratitude to Jean-Pierre Hiernaux during the Conference in Aix-enProvence. Right now let me say, on your behalf and on my behalf: thank you Jean-Pierre!

to allow you TO CHECK whether:
- your proposal is integrated in the programme (it may be missing because of a
problem with e-mail or an accidental deletion) and in the correct session(s)
- your proposal is correctly presented typing errors etc. may have occurred:
especially important is the check of the email addresses
- all required information is presented (you may have forgotten to provide a
translation of the title of your paper in French; your institutional affiliation and/or
your e-mail address may be lacking)
- in the timetable (p. 6) there is no overlap, in a given time segment, between sessions
you have to participate in as speaker, discussant or president (With the help of Mrs
Chiara Trentin, I have checked carefully your performances in different sessions,
however, we may have overlooked something. Although it was clearly specified in the
precedent Network that “each participant may only present one paper at the conference”
and that the president of a session should be selected amongst the participants of this
session, many of you did not follow these rules. If you locate an overlap that concerns
you, please let me know before February 20th).

OBITUARY
Miklós Tomka (1941 - 2010), a sociologist from Hungary who participated actively in the
ISSR for many years, has died unexpectedly. Although his first degree was in economics, his
scholarly life was devoted to sociological investigations of religion. He was a wonderful
researcher and methodologist, mainly organizing quantitative studies of religiosity in Hungary
and other European societies. He was also a charismatic speaker. His conference presentations
and the discussions arising from them were unforgettable for his engagement, his fine
capacity for argument and his high degree of personal investment. His numerous
publications (in German, English, French and Hungarian plus translations mainly into Slavic
languages) are firmly rooted in the research traditions of the sociology of religion,
exemplified by his 2005 book summarizing his thoughts on Church, State, and Society in
Eastern Europe. The importance of Miklós Tomka’s legacy lies not only in the high quality
of his work but also in his determination to maintain international scientific standards and
good international relations at a time when communist regimes forced sociology to do combat
with religion. He never accepted this; and he showed how to maintain scientific
independence.
He was also an excellent teacher and a magnificent organizer. He served for many years as a
Council Member of the International Society for the Sociology of religion. He was also cofounder and president for two terms of ISORECEA, the International Association for the
Study of Religion in Central and Eastern Europe. He organized innumerable conferences. The
ISSR conference in Budapest that he organized in 1995 is unforgettable. We shall forever
remember him standing on a boat on the River Danube welcoming on board with a glass of
golden sparkling wine all the guests at the evening’s party.
