Magnificent Games
It is with these words that Jacques Rogge summed up the
XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin, during the Closing
Ceremony on the evening of 26 February that brought two
weeks of sport and festivities to a close. The event was
based on Carnival and the Italian Commedia dell’Arte and
was enthusiastically watched by the 30,000 spectators in
the stadium - among them Italian Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi and dignitaries from all over the world - and
millions of TV viewers in the five continents who followed
the final moments of this great
adventure.
Our congratulations go to the
whole of the TOROC team who,
together with the Italian
Government and the people of the
Region of Piedmont have given the
whole world so many truly unforgettable emotions – in true Italian
style! Our congratulations also go
to the athletes, the officials, and the
volunteers, who gave of their very best.
Out of a total of 80 NOCs present in Turin, 47 teams were
European and of these 20 took home at least one medal.
First place once again went to Germany. Our Continent
won 178 medals out of a total of 252, close on 70.6%. A
flattering success no doubt, but one that Europe will have
to fight to maintain in the face of the increasingly amazing
results obtained by athletes from other continents.
Over and above the competitions, the programme for the
XX Olympic Winter Games also included some important
cultural events, comprising art and music, that the city of
Turin was able to show to a worldwide public.
At the end of the Games, the Mayor of Turin Sergio
Chiamparino gave Jacques Rogge a gold medal on behalf
of the city, who in turn, in recognition of the excellent
organisation, gave the Mayor and the citizens of Turin the
Olympic Cup, an award instituted by the founder of the
modern Olympics Pierre de Coubertin in 1906.Together
with Jacques Rogge were the Italian Government
Supervisor for the Games Mario Pescante, and TOROC
President Valentino Castellani, who gave the Mayor the
Olympic Flame.
Des Jeux vraiment magnifiques
C’est ainsi que Jacques Rogge a résumé les XXes Jeux
Olympiques d’hiver de Turin, lors de la cérémonie de clôture qui le soir du 26 février a baissé le rideau sur deux
semaines de sport et de fête. Une cérémonie de clôture à
l’enseigne du carnaval et de la commedia dell’arte qui a
enthousiasmé les 30.000 spectateurs présents dans le
stade – parmi eux le Premier Ministre italien Silvio
Berlusconi et de nombreux chefs d’état du monde entier
– ainsi que les millions de téléspectateurs qui dans les
cinq continents ont suivi les
derniers moments de cette grande
aventure.
Félicitations à toute l’équipe du
TOROC qui conjointement au
gouvernement italien et aux habitants de la région du Piémont ont
su offrir au monde entier des émotions inoubliables - à l’italienne!
Félicitations aux athlètes, aux officiels, aux volontaires qui ont su
donner le meilleur d’eux-mêmes.
Sur un total de 80 CNO présents à Turin, 47 équipes
venaient d’Europe et 20 d’entre elles ont remporté une
médaille. La première place est revenue une fois encore à
l’Allemagne. Notre continent a obtenu 178 médailles sur
un total de 252 médailles en lice, soit environ le 70,6%.
Un succès flatteur sans doute, mais que l’Europe devra
veiller à maintenir, face à l’avancée éclatante des sportifs
d’autres continents.
Au-delà des émotions des compétitions sportives, le programme des XXes Jeux d’hier a réservé des moments forts
de culture, d’art et de musique que la ville de Turin a su
offrir au public du monde entier. Au terme des Jeux,
Sergio Chiamparino, maire de Torino, a décerné la
médaille d'or de la Ville à Jacques Rogge, qui à son tour
a offert au maire et aux habitants de Turin la Coupe
Olympique, une récompense instituée par le rénovateur
des Jeux Olympiques Pierre de Coubertin en 1906. Aux
côtés de Jacques Rogge étaient présents le superviseur des
Jeux pour le gouvernement italien, Mario Pescante, et le
président du TOROC, Valentino Castellani, qui a offert
au Maire la flamme olympique.

The Olympic flag was handed over to Vancouver,
Canada, who will organise the XXI Edition of the
Olympic Winter Games in 2010.

The Torino 2006 Games in numbers – 2,573 athletes
from 80 different countries – 18,000 volunteers (as well
as 3,000 volunteers for the Paralympic Games and a further 6,000 for the Ceremonies) –2,500 employees –
900,000 tickets sold for a total of 69.4 million euro –
930,000 watched the competitions and training sessions,
400,000 travellers used public transport for excursions
to the mountains whilst a further 530,000 used transport in the city; the 1,200 special Olympic buses and
trains were used by a total of 290,000 people. The
Games were followed worldwide thanks to 1,000 hours
of live TV and the Torino 2006 website, which had
667,258,000 hits during the 15 days of the Games.
Lastly, 540,000 official products were sold for a total
income of 11,000,000 euro.

BELGIUM – on February 18, the COIB launched the
celebrations scheduled for its 100th Anniversary. For
the occasion, the world of Belgian sport was invited to
the Hotel Ravenstein where, exactly 100 years ago, the
COIB, originally called Belgian Olympic Committee,
was incorporated by Baron Edouard de Laveleye and
Cyrille Van Overbergh. Numerous personalities from
the Belgian Olympic Movement and world of sport, as
well as the Ministers for Sport Isabelle Weykmans,
Bert Anciaux, and Claude Eerdekens, but also
Freddy
Thielemans
the
Burgomaster
and
Bertin
Mampaka the Councillor for
Sport for the city of Brussels,
were also present. IOC President
Jacques Rogge, who was in Italy
for the Olympic Winter Games
in Turin, expressed his recognition to the men and women who
made the history of the COIB in
its 100 years of existence by
means of a video. The ceremony on February 18 – the
first of a long series that will take place in months to
come - took place at the new Passage Olympique officially inaugurated at the “Sportimonium” museum,
where, among other items, a large collection of medals,
sports equipment and photographs, once the property
of Belgian sports heroes, are exhibited.
BELGIQUE - Les célébrations programmées pour le
100ème anniversaire du COIB ont débuté le 18 février. A
cette occasion, le monde sportif belge fut invité à l’Hôtel
Ravenstein à Bruxelles où, il y a tout juste 100 ans, l’acte de
fondation du COIB dont la dénomination était encore à
l’époque « Comité Olympique Belge » fut signé par le
Baron Edouard de Laveleye et Cyrille Van Overbergh.
De nombreuses personnalités du mouvement olympique et
sportif belge, ainsi que les ministres des sports, Isabelle
Weykmans, Bert Anciaux, Claude Eerdekens, mais aussi
Freddy Thielemans, bourgmestre
et Bertin Mampaka, échevin des
sports de la Ville de Bruxelles ont
assisté à la cérémonie. Jacques
Rogge, président du CIO, retenue
en Italie pour les Jeux Olympiques
d’hiver à Turin, a exprimé par le
biais d’un message vidéo toute sa
reconnaissance pour les hommes et
les femmes qui firent l’histoire du
COIB ces 100 dernières années. La
cérémonie du 18 février- la première d’une longue série qui
sera organisée dans les mois qui viennent – s’est achevée au
nouveau Passage Olympique officiellement inauguré au
musée des sports : « le Sportimonium », où sont exposés;
entre autres, une grande collection de médailles, des équipements de sport ainsi que des photos ayant appartenu aux
héros olympiques belges.
GREAT BRITAIN – 1924 curling team awarded
Gold medals 82 years after their victory- The
International Olympic Committee announced this
month that Britain's victorious 1924 curling team
will receive official recognition as Olympic champions - rather than their previous classification as
winners of a demonstration sport.
GRANDE BRETAGNE – Des médailles d’or attribuées à l’équipe de curling de 1924, 82 ans après leur victoire.- Le Comité International Olympique a annoncé que
les membres de l’équipe de curling de Grande-Bretagne,
victorieuse en 1924, seront officiellement reconnus
comme champions olympiques – ils étaient jusque là
classés comme vainqueurs d‘un sport de démonstration.

The team of Willie and Laurence Jackson, Robin
Welsh and Tom Murray won the competition at the
inaugural Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix. . They
defeated Sweden 38-7 and France 46-4 inoutdoor matches lasting 18 ends - but never got the chance to defend
their title as curling disappeared from the Olympic programme until 1998.

cours de 18 matchs outdoor, mais n’avait jamais eu la
chance de défendre son titre, car le curling a disparu
du programme olympique jusqu’en 1998.
ISRAEL – I have a dream: waiting for the 2012 London
Olympic Games
The "Team 2012" project was officially initiated at the
Sheraton-Moriah Hotel in Tel Aviv (a sponsor of the
Olympic Committee) last 6 February. The project aims to
promote athletic talents in view of the London 2012
Olympic Games. The group consists of 60 young athletes
who represent 18 sports and who were selected further to
recommendations from their associations, given on the
basis of their athletic achievements in recent years. The
event was attended by the Israeli Olympic medallists and
Zvi Varshaviak, President of the Olympic Committee of
Israel, who stressed that this is the Committee’s "flag project" as it is designed to create a broader basis for the
Olympic Team.

Olympiques de London 2012
Le projet "Team 2012" a débuté officiellement le 6
février au Sheraton-Moriah Hotel à Tel Aviv, partenaire du comité olympique. Le projet entend promouvoir les talents athlétiques en vue des Jeux
Olympiques de 2012 qui se dérouleront à Londres.
Le groupe d’athlètes comprend 60 jeunes athlètes
représentant 18 sports, sélectionnés sur recommandation de leurs associations pour leurs performances
athlétiques. Assistaient à la manifestation les médaillés olympiques et Zvi Varshaviak, président du
CNO israélien, qui a souligné l’importance du projet phare pour élargir la base de la future l’équipe
olympique.
ITALY - The Art and Sport Competition,
that the Fondazione Giulio Onesti and the
Italian Olympic Academy organise every two
years, was won by the young painter Gianni
Moretti, a student at the Brera Academy of
Fine Arts in Milan, with the work “The
Illustrated Life of the Perfect Athlete”, and
the young sculptor Giacomo Del Monte a
student at the Academy of Fine Arts at
Urbino. The 41 works exhibited by the various Italian academies of fine arts have been
exhibited at the Foro Italico, the Olympic
complex in Rome, where the Italian NOC
has its HQ.
ITALIE - Le Concours Art et Sport organisé tous les deux ans par la Fondation
Giulio Onesti et l’Académie Olympique
Italienne a été remporté par le jeune peintre Gianni Moretti ,élève de l’Académie
des Beaux Arts de Brera , Milan, avec
l’oeuvre «la vie illustrée du parfait athlète »
et le jeune sculpteur Giacomo Del Monte
élève de l’Académie des Beaux Arts de
Urbino. Les 41 oeuvres présentées par les
différentes écoles des Beaux Arts italiennes
ont été exposées au Foro Italico, le complexe olympique de Rome, siège du CNO
italien.

The 118th IOC Session took place in Turin on the eve
of the Games. Among the more important decisions
taken, it was decided to: select Copenhagen (DEN) as
host city for the 2009 IOC Session and 13th Olympic
Congress; elected 5 new Members (Beatrice Allen, VicePresident of the NOC of Gambia, Nicole Hoevertz
Secretary General of the NOC of Aruba, HRH Prince
Tunku Imran, President of the NOC of Malaysia,
Francesco Ricci Bitti, President of the Italian Tennis
Federation, and Hein Verbruggen from the
Netherlands, Executive Vice-President of the
International Cycling Union. Thomas Bach (GER) was
elected IOC Vice-President, and Mario Pescante (ITA)
and Sam Ramsamy (South Africa) were elected members of the Executive Board. Kikis Lazarides, the
President of the NOC of Cyprus, was awarded the IOC
Order of Merit. Our congratulations to one and all!
On February 26, day of the closing of the Games, a last
meeting of the Session ratified the election of the two
athletes nominated by a record 80% of their peers at the
Olympic Village and who will join the IOC Athletes’
Commission and will become IOC Members for eight
years: the cross-country skiing silver medallist Beckie
Scott (CAN) and the ice hockey player Saku Koivu
(FIN).
La 118e Session du CIO s’est tenue à Turin à la veille des
Jeux. Parmi les principales décisions prises: choix de
Copenhague (Danemark) comme ville-hôte de la Session
du CIO de 2009 et du 13e Congrès Olympique - élection
de 5 nouveaux membres : Beatrice Allen (Gambie) vice
présidente du CNO, Nicole Hoevertz (Aruba) secrétaire
générale du CNO, SAR le Prince Tunku Imran
(Malaisie), président du CNO, Francesco Ricci Bitti
(Italie) président de la FI de Tennis et Hein Verbruggen
(Pays-Bas) vice président exécutif de l’Union Cycliste
Internationale – Thomas Bach (Allemagne) a été élu vice
président du CIO, tandis que Mario Pescante (Italie) et
Sam Ramsamy (Afrique du Sud) on été élus membres de
la commission exécutive. Enfin, pour ce qui concerne
l’Europe, Kikis Lazarides (Chypre) président du CNO et
membre sortant du CIO, a reçu l’Ordre du Mérite du
CIO. Félicitations à tous !
Le 26 février, jour de clôture des Jeux, une dernière réunion de la Session a permis de ratifier l’élection des deux
athlètes élus par 80% de leurs pairs au Village olympique
– une participation record : Beckie Scott (Canada)
médaille d’argent en ski de fond et Saku Koivu (Finlande)
hockey sur glace, qui entrent à la Commission des athlètes
et deviennent membres du CIO pour une durée de huit
ans.

BEIJING 2008 – the Turin Games having come to a
close, the organisers of Beijing 2008 have now taken
the stage – preparations are going ahead in all fields.
In mid January a worldwide competition for the
design of the Beijing Olympic Games medals was
officially launched and will last till 26 March 2006.
BOCOG have published the regulations and application form for the competition on their official website (www.beijing2008.com) and through the media.
Furthermore, BOCOG and the Chinese Ministry for
Education plan to join forces in running a series of
activities concerning Olympic education in the
course of 2006.
BEIJING 2008 – Les Jeux de Turin terminés, les organisateurs de Beijing 2008 prennent résolument le devant de la
scène. Les travaux de préparation se poursuivent dans tous
les secteurs. A la mi-janvier, la collecte des projets de conception pour les médailles des Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008
à l'échelle mondiale a été officiellement lancée et durera
jusqu'au 26 mars 2006. A cet effet, le BOCOG publie, par
le biais de son site Internet officiel (www.beijing2008.com)
et des médias, les règlements régissant cette activité et le formulaire de participation. D'autre part, le BOCOG et le
ministère de l'Education comptent rejoindre leurs efforts
pour déployer en 2006 une série d'activités touchant à l'éducation olympique.
VANCOUVER 2010 – “Come play with us!” this was
the invitation launched by the
organisers of the 2010 Games to
the world at the closure of the
Turin Games. After having officially received the Olympic Flag
– that was handed over to the
Mayor of Vancouver Sam
Sullivan - Canada and VANOC
gave an eight minute presentation in celebration of Canada’s
passion for winter sports and
team spirit. The preparations
for the XXI Olympic Winter Games, that had hitherto been out of the limelight, are now on the forefront
of the scene.
VANCOUVER 2010 – «Venez jouer avec nous ! »

clôture des Jeux de Turin. Après
avoir officiellement reçu le drapeau olympique – qui a été

la passion du Canada pour les
sports d’hiver et le travail
d’équipe. Jusqu’ici quelque peu en sourdine, les préparatifs des XXIes Jeux d’Hiver sont désormais bien
engagés.

EOC President Mario Pescante and European
Commissioner responsible for Sport, Jan Figel, met
on the occasion of the Torino Olympic Games and
discussed topical issues and more particularly actual
problems after the Bosman case and nationality
items.
Marc Theisen, President of the NOC of
Luxembourg and EOC legal expert was in attendance. In this context, the EOC intends organising a
Forum on EU issues.
Le Président Pescante et le commissaire européen
chargé du sport Jan Figel ont eu un entretien à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques de Turin. Ils ont examiné les
différents dossiers d’actualité et notamment les effets
de la sentence Bosman et les problèmes liés à la nationalité des athlètes. A cet effet les COE envisagent l’organisation d’un Forum plus particulièrement axé sur
ces thèmes. Marc Theisen, président du CNO
Luxembourgeois et expert juridique des COE assistait
à la réunion.

DIVERS
In the run up to the Torino 2006 IX Paralympic
Winter Games that will start 10 March, the organisers
at TOROC are back at work for “ the second round of
this great event”, as stated by President Valentino
Castellani. The Paralympic Winter Games will use a
part of the facilities set up for the Olympic Games:
Torino Esposizioni for the ice sledge hockey, the
Palaghiaccio at Pinerolo for the curling, Sestriere Borgata
for Alpine skiing, and Pragelato Plan for cross-country
skiing and biathlon. The Olympic Villages in Turin and
Sestriere, and the Sestriere medal plaza, the reference
point for all journalists, will continue to function for this
second round of Games. The Opening and the Closing
Ceremonies will take place in the Olympic Stadium and
at Piazza Castello in Turin respectively. About 3,000
volunteers will contribute to the success of the winter
Paralympics, which will continue until 19 March.
En attendant les IXes Jeux Paralympiques de Torino
2006 qui débuteront le 10 mars, les organisateurs du
TOROC se remettent au travail pour « le second rendezvous de ce grand événement» comme l’a toujours affirmé
le président Valentino Castellani. Les Jeux Paralympiques
se disputeront sur une partie des installations des JO : à
Torino Esposizioni pour le hockey sur luge, au
Palaghiaccio de Pinerolo pour le curling, à Sestriere
Borgata pour le ski alpin, et à Pragelato Plan pour le ski de
fond et le biathlon. Le village olympique de Torino, celui
de Sestriere, et le centre des médias de Sestriere, lieu de
référence pour tous les journalistes, continueront de fonctionner durant ces Jeux. Les Cérémonies d’Ouverture et
de Clôture auront respectivement lieu au Stade
Olympique et à Piazza Castello. Quelque 3000 bénévoles
contribueront à la réussite des Paralympiques d’hiver qui
