an number of enthusiasts including Jean-Marie Leblanc, JeanFrançois Pescheux (the person
responsible for the present-day
route), the Vélo Club de Roubaix
and others decided to tackle the
renovation of the cobbled tracks.
Supported by, among other bodies,
the Conseil Général du Nord, the
Conseil Régional, the Ministry for
Youth and Sport, and Amaury Sport
Organisation, the “Amis du ParisRoubaix” saved the cobbles. With
the help of Horticultural Schools in
Raismes and Lomme, whole tracks
have been restored; certain sections have even been created from
new; a three-year programme is
planned for the stretches that have
deteriorated the most, such as at
Mons-en-Pévèle (1000 m),
Templeuve (750 m) and Cysoing
(1000 m). So an important part of
our heritage is secured!

Paris-Roubaix cycle race, since the
experts claim that it is here that the
winner is decided. But have you
ever asked yourself whether this
sporting test of stamina would be
as spectacular and as fabled
without what makes it so original
and “infernal”, namely the cobbles
of the Nord?
And yet at one time these cobbles,
and therefore the Paris-Roubaix
itself, were at one time an endangered species, whence the realisation and response of the “Amis du
Paris-Roubaix”. Faced with the difficulties since the late 70s of laying
on the race in view of the fact that
main roads were being subjected
to the ravages of the tar spreader,

Notes for walkers:
A discovery trail in the Little
Switzerland of the Nord,
a mere stone’s throw from
the metropolis. Its cobbled
tracks, “voyettes” and farm
tracks take the walker
across fields and past
farmsteads of typically
decorative stone and brick
construction, and then
flirt with the Marque.
The shorter alternative
route is particularly
suitable for families.
Exercise caution along
the rue d’Infière and also
on the RD 94 (point 6).

Start: Gruson: car park opposite the community centre.

Leave the car park and make for the
church. Go down the steps to the road and
then the street opposite. Turn right into the
housing estate. At the intersection, go on
down to your left and at the bend turn right
into the track called the chemin du Marais.
Go on to the RD 94 on the right.

Turn left, cross over the Marque and
then before the subway under the motorway
turn left onto the track parallel to the
Marque. Go straight ahead for 1250 m.

Join up with the banks of the Marque
on your left and head off to the right. Do not
cross over the footbridge. Carry on until
you reach a second footbridge and cross
over it. Walk on alongside the wood, turn
right and then left along by the Ferme de la
Courte. Part of the buildings probably
dates from the XVIIIth century. The 1871
inscribed above the porch, refers to the
erection of the tower.

At the intersection, turn left onto the
rue d’Infière for 1500 m, a minor road bordered by pastureland in pleasant surroundings in a valley. On your way is the departmentally-owned woodland of the Bois
d’Infière on your left, which will shortly be
landscaped and opened to the public.

right again into the cobbled rue du

du Val de Marque
Château. Note the sandstone cross the
other side of the hedge. It dates from
1356. The cross and Christ were carved
from a single block of stone. This wayside
cross could have been part of the tomb of
Jacques de Lallaing, who fought alongside
the French king Jean the Good. Formerly in
Cysoing, it was brought to Gruson at the
time of the Revolution, after 1795. After
the building – the farmstead of Landas –
keep to your left and go into the narrow
path between the hedges. Farmstead of
Landas: two buildings with stepped gables
framing the entrance.

At the end take the RD 94 to your left
– exercise caution. At the next crossroads,
turn right into the rue Calmette and, 500 m
further on, right along the cobbled track.
This 1 km long track ends at the RD 90 and
the “Carrefour de l’Arbre”, made famous
by the Paris-Roubaix cycle race. The crossroads is the coldest spot in the village and
is nicknamed “the North Pole”.

Before the road, turn off left into the
chemin de Bourghelles. After 1 km, turn left
again back to the village.

Go down the rue Verte opposite.
Before the farmstead, turn into the “sente”,
the path, between the gardens. At the end,
perform a right-then-left turn and walk
along the small path called the sentier des
Ecoliers. Go up to your right towards the
church and the community centre car park.
